The OverAchiever: Return of the Glory of the Hero
Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle. -- Firefly, "Our Mrs. Reynolds."Just as a recap, this is what we've covered so far in the OverAchiever: Glory of the Hero series:
- Part I: Ahn'kahet
- Part II: Azjol-Nerub and Culling of Stratholme
- Part III: Drak'Tharon Keep
Snakes, Why'd It Have to Be Snakes?
As a note, this achievement seems to be individually- rather than group-based; you can get it even if someone else gets wrapped. However, if you're interested in getting multiple people the achievement all at once, there are ways to ensure it doesn't happen at all.The easiest way to do it is to tank Slad'ran at the very top of the stairs (technically more of a ramp), right around where you first enter the instance. This is obviously easier with a Hunter using Misdirect or any player with a speed bonus/ability aggroing him then running off, but in a pinch any tank can manage it too.
Keep him there. Due to the distance from his spawn spot, you'll have adequate time to kill Slad'ran before the adds reach you if you're packing great DPS. With good to mediocre DPS, all of the adds will be confined to the narrow ramp and can be AoE'd down easily. If the adds are consistently killed, they'll never get the chance to wrap a player, and bingo -- enjoy your achievement.
Less-rabi
I'll lay it out for you: either you'll nail this achievement on the first try, or (more likely) you'll spend the better part of an evening resetting the fight and trying over...and over...and over...
The directive of the achievement itself is simple; keep Moorabi from Transforming. The ability is a spell and can be interrupted by any standard player interrupt ability (although it can't be silenced, so you can forget about trying to preempt a Transform cast by running in and casting something like Arcane Torrent). What makes Less-rabi difficult
is that Moorabi's attempts to Transform become faster and faster as his health drops, to the point of becoming functionally instant. However, as he attempts to cast Transform at a predictable rate -- before 50% health, he casts it every 10 seconds, and after 50%, every 5 seconds -- you can nail an interrupt without actually having to see the cast go off. Then again, if there's any server- or client-side lag, what you think is a timely interrupt and what Moorabi thinks is a timely interrupt may be two different things. Don't try this if the instance server's not behaving itself. Here's the deal: any group with at least 3 interrupts on short cooldowns should be able to manage this, but if you want to stack the deck in your favor, take two or more of the following:
- Protection Warrior
- Shaman (one specced into Reverberation helps out a lot)
- Rogue
Plan on your DPS being able to manage something in the region of 2.5K-3K DPS each to pull this off successfully. Count on using consumables, Bloodlust/Heroism, and trinkets, especially if gear quality isn't stellar.
Once you've got your group together, huddle up in Moorabi's room and agree on a game plan concerning who's interrupting when. If your DPS is very good, Moorabi will die within 30-35 seconds, giving you 3 to 4 Transform casts. The most crucial casts will be the third and -- if it happens -- the fourth. If you've tried this and you know your group should realistically expect to see a fourth Transform cast occur past 35% health, you may want more than one person trying to interrupt at that point to increase the odds that someone nails it.
Aggro Moorabi. if you have a Bloodlust/Heroism, pop it straight off the pull. The first Transform cast will occur shortly. It will be a fairly lengthy cast, and the first interrupter should wait until the last moment to do it to allow more damage in the interim.
The second Transform cast should also be relatively easy. At 50%, players should pop cooldowns and trinkets and go for broke.
The third Transform cast, assuming your DPS is good, will be tougher but still doable as long as the player concerned isn't on the GCD at the time. Moorabi should be clocking in under 50% health at this point and will begin attempting to cast Transform every 5 seconds. Begin counting down (or, better yet, use the ingame stopwatch) to count off 5 seconds immediately following the last of your interrupts past 50%. This is where a Shaman with Reverberation helps, as they can simply try spamming Earth Shock as it comes off cooldown, and it should automatically interrupt Moorabi's casts as they share the same cooldown.
Of course, Moorabi can also use his AoE stun ability in the interim, and you can watch your good work go down the drain as he casts Transform unimpeded. All you can do is try again. While this is an ability he's only supposed to have in mammoth form, I've seen him use it all too often in troll form, which often ends any shot you've got at Less-rabi. Whether this is a bug or an intended consequence of attempting to keep him from Transforming, I don't know, but it does throw an additional (and highly unwelcome) element of luck into the achievement.
You are most likely to lose this once he's past 15% health. If he Transforms successfully, at that point you'll have to pray that any DoT's or bleeds on him don't kill him as you run for the exit and try to reset the fight.
What the Eck?
In return for having to do Less-rabi, you're rewarded with this extremely easy achievement. How easy is it? Stand in front of Eck the Ferocious while he's casting Eck Spit, get the debuff, and then go kill Gal'darah.
The only catch here is that immunity effects like Divine Shield and Ice Block will remove the debuff, in addition to the more standard route of losing it if you die. Because this achievement is so easy, you may actually want to save this for another run where you're not working on Share The Love, especially if you're a healer without an off-healer in the group.
Share The Love
Speaking of which, this is the final achievement in Gun'Drak and another relatively easy one overall as long as you've got an off-healer and off-tank with you. The only real trick to this is to have the off-tank taunt after they've been Impaled, because Gal'darah never targets the player at the top of his hate list for this ability, so the use of an off-tank is the only way to get the main tank Impaled. An off-healer is helpful, not only for the increased damage an off-tank is likely to take, but also for the time in which the main healer or a clothy is Impaled.
There's some luck involved -- people can get Impaled multiple times before you cycle through 5 unique Impales, and that's frustrating -- but otherwise this achievement is really just a waiting game and a test of your healer's reflexes. It's gear dependent to the extent that if your tank/s and healer/s aren't well-geared, it's going to be difficult to keep everyone up if you get unlucky with Impale continually hitting the same player, but otherwise it's not overly tough.

Improved counterspell doesn't work on Moorabi like that anymore. Transform is a physical ability now, meaning it can't be locked out. Hitting him with any interrupt ability only stops it until the next cast 5 seconds later, assuming he's under 50% health.
In addition to a reverb shammy making it much easier, a combat rogue spamming FoK with the talent letting it interrupt helps as well. Just a few seconds after the first sub 50% interrupt hit AR and start spamming.
Heilig May 17th 2009 7:05PM
Thank you for pointing this out. Anyone who has actually tried this tactic knows the lockout DOES NOT WORK and hasn't for months.
I am not usually one to call foul at an author, but please, do a little research next time. You don't even have to do the achievement yourself to find this out, you can look on wowhead's forums for the achievement and see almost to the day when counterspell stopped locking him out.
Kyo May 17th 2009 7:38PM
Completely correct and like Heilig I normally wouldn't call the author out for something like this but it was changed quite some time ago, also does the author realized just exactly what Improve Counterspell does? It gives it a 2/4 (per rank) silence and that is useless seeing as how Moorabi is immune to silences...

I'll change the article because it looks like it's been multiple players' experiences that Improved Counterspell no longer works, but I think it's important to note that it *did* work for three groups I've run for heroic Gun'drak achievements, two of which did it past the point indicated by the Wowhead thread that it had been hotfixed.
Like other players, I was interested in seeing whether some strategies had been hotfixed at the time. Group #2 confirmed that kiting Moorabi until he changes forms, and then having him aggro the rest of the group -- that doesn't work anymore. But Improved Counterspell was successful both there and with Group #3. I'll shrug it off and attribute either to an inaccurate combat log reading or a bug -- but yes, it worked. I would not have written this otherwise.

I've been told by multiple groups that they hotfixed it long ago to make him immune to silence or school lockouts. The mage trick no one even tries on my server anymore. We simply just burn him with 3 people doing 4k dps. First interupt is from tank, second interupt is at about 40%, shamen hits it who'ss pecced reverb, at this point shamen stops all dps and just spams earth shock and nothing else, their job isn't dps it isn't heals, it's to save global cooldown and hit 3rd interupt too. 3rd interupt is typically under 10%, then fight is over, win. BTW heroism on the pull too. I've done this achievement 4 times. One shot every time doing this strat. Only time this strat fails is when your dps is too fail and he casts a 4th time, from experience reverb specced shamen even can't interupt 3 in a row, their cooldown although exactly 5 seconds seems to always get out of sync at this point and miss it.

PS.
I thought I'd add to Share The Love
You do NOT get credit for share the love if anyone dies during encounter. even if all 5 are impaled, All 5 have to be impaled and SURVIVE it.
Jim May 18th 2009 6:38AM
Are you sure? i did it like around when Patch 3.1 came out and 2 of our 5 people died and we got it...
Adurocruor May 17th 2009 6:24PM
there is a insanely easier way to do the snakes one
you actually take on the boss in the room of the second boss. So go in run past first boss drop second then go send your tank to grab the first one with the healer at the doorway of the second bosses room ready to heal the tank as he comes in
when the snakes spawn they spawn in the first room. so it takes them a while to get to you if the boss is able to be taken down in enough time everyone in the group will get the snakes achievement.
Anonymous Spriest May 17th 2009 10:48PM
Just adding on to this,
Instead, you can have the tank pull him and run to the top of the stairs to the entrance with the dps waiting up top and the healers somewhere in the middle/bottom
I did this strategy with a pug and we were able to kill the boss with only one wave of adds getting to the top at about 10%
-Good luck and happy WoW'ing

Very good post here again, GJ, except it looks like you said for the Moorabi achievement, that hes immune to silences, yet you said improved counterspell, a silence, is very helpful, dont know if im misinterpreting, or if its a typo or something, but just wanted to inform you.
Spiral May 17th 2009 6:35PM
Someone has already mentioned that the Transform is a physical ability and Imp. Counterspell doesn't work, but... I don't really understand the logic in the article even if it did work.
The fastest intervals that he casts transform are 5 seconds apart sub 50% health. The silence is 4 seconds (if it worked). Therefore, it would do nothing, correct?
You even mentioned yourself that a silence like Arcane Torrent will not work. I'm not trolling/flaming ya or anything, but I don't follow. >.>
Anyway though, from my personal experience, a reverb spec'd shaman and a Throwing Specialization spec'd rogue are generally the best options for Less-rabi. In addition to high dps of course.
Allison Robert May 17th 2009 9:06PM
Responded above, but I've had two groups successfully use Improved Counterspell past the point where it was supposedly hotfixed, which was why I left it in. People who have attempted Less-rabi more recently have not found this to be true, so I'll change the article.
From what I recall of doing Less-rabi in the months after Wrath went live, Moorabi has always been immune to silences, but not (oddly enough) immune to the silence effect from Improved Counterspell, which was what made that tactic so valuable. And nope, it didn't make any sense, which I guess is why it got fixed.
Camthalion May 17th 2009 7:14PM
I just wanted to add one thing to make the Share the Love achievement a little easier. As a hunter, after I got impaled, I hit Feign death and stayed "dead" until the entire group had been impaled. This removed me as a possible target. This achievement is not a dps race so staying out of the fight for however long wasn't a factor.
Likewise, if you get into a loop where he keeps skipping the 5th person you need, dps him down as far as you feel safe, then let two of the dps die. This will give you a 50-50 chance of having the 5th person die since he won't take the highest threat.
Not sure if Mysticalos hit a bug, but you do not need to have the full group survive.
Jack Spicer May 17th 2009 7:48PM
Maybe it wasn't a bug. Maybe it doesn't count if the impale kills the player - although they can die from other damage.
scotty May 17th 2009 8:31PM
I dont know if its been mentioned but you can use a hunter to pull moorabi up towards the entrance closest to him untill he transforms and then feign death and have the rest of the group pick him up on the way back so it counts as if he never transformed and u fight him as the mammoth the whole time very easy if u know a good hunter
Paprikka May 17th 2009 8:44PM
That was fixed before even Gotta Go! was changed, or at the same time at the latest. He always resets back to troll form now and still will cast transformation.
Allison Robert May 17th 2009 9:08PM
Yup, that's been hotfixed, which is really kind of a pity because I always thought of it as a rather inventive way to do the fight.
