My advice is: find where you want to be, and work your way up the ranks.
That is what I did. I found a guild that was doing what I wanted, and managed to join. They were full on tanks (I was feral tank on BC), so I almost never got to raid. They were running T5/T6 content back then, and I was stuck doing Kara runs with the other "leftovers". Then one night one of the tanks was not there, and the usual replacement was not online either, and I've got my chance. After a couple weeks, I was the "usual replacement". A couple months later, I was one of the regular tanks.
It takes training and patience to find your spot. But, unless you are willing to work for it, you will never get there.

Agree.
If you like the guild, if everything about the guild is what you want except raid slots, stick with it. Turnover happens. Might be a while, but people leave. If you're skilled and patient, a raid spot will open up.
