To be chosen or needed to raid, you need to be flexible.
I have limited time to raid, yet when I can turn up, I have no problem being chosen to go due to multiple toons and dual specs. As a Boomkin/Tree, I can be either healing or DPS and everyone is glad of the Boomkin's extra crit and improved Mark of the Wild. I also have a prot pally and firefrost mage (who really doesn't get much work at all) so any raid may consist of me starting as moonkin, changing to healing tree halfway through and occasionally tanking as needed.
This also means that I don't really have a main or obsess about alts, I simply play what the raid needs and spend a lot of gold on the auction making sure my gear is good enough on all my toons despite not having a lot of time for raid drops.
So if you are stuck as a single toon and no-one wants you then first try dual specs and then get another toon or two in your stable.
