Blood Pact: Interview with a PVPer

Welcome Warlocks! Once weekly, Nick Whelan delves into the despicable underbelly of Dalaran to consort with cabalist casters, who help him channel Beelzebub into a fresh Blood Pact.
When I first took over this column, I remember discussing with several people my worries about the content I wouldn't be able to provide. At my best I'm a casual raider, and my PVP experience is limited to that time I did With a Little Helper from My Friends. Certainly I'm passionate about the class, can write better than a few other people I've seen published, and usually play enough to have some Warlock-specific ramble prepared every week. Still, I wanted to find some way of providing content for PVP oriented locks that they would at least find entertaining--even if it was simply footage of me getting one-shot by a level 75 tree Druid.
Then last week one of my readers left a comment suggesting I find a kickass PVP Warlock and interview them. The next few hours are kind of a blur. I remember banging my head against the wall a couple times, and waking up in a hospital, but that's not important.Interviewing a Warlock skilled in PVP could make for some interesting column content. So, I went to the armory to do some hunting.
Being as I know very little about PVP, I didn't quite know where to start. But as a player in the Bloodlust battlegroup, I've long heard that it's one of the more 'hardcore' battlegroups, so I figured looking at the most highly rated teams who played on Bloodlust servers would be an excellent start. Predictably, none of the top teams had Warlocks in them--which left even a PvE player like myself feeling a little resentful towards Blizzard--but there were certainly some very skilled players to peruse. I looked over the profiles and achievements of several Warlocks who were more than qualified, but one in particular caught my eye.
Whiteshadowz of Tichondrius has a staggering list of accomplishments. Not only had he mastered several difficult achievements in multiple battlegrounds, but both his 3v3 and his 5v5 teams were in the top ten for the battlegroup that week, and his 2v2 was in the top 50. I quickly rolled an alt on Tichondrius, farmed up some cash with a helpful friend, and sent him a letter. A few days later, he was able to spare some time to have a chat with me.
Nick: First, you've been successful in a large range of PVP if your armory is any indication. You're in the top 10 for both 3v3s and 5v5s in your battle group, and you've got difficult achievements for each of the battlegrounds. What is it about PVP that drives you?
Whiteshadowz: The competition, and the little details that add up to a win.
N: I'm a pretty huge scrub in PVP myself, so tell me about the little details. Maybe I can learn a thing or two!
W: There's a lot of things. Such as positioning properly to limit your opponents options, well timed interrupts, and crowd control chains / swaps just to name a few.
N: Now, your biggest success is clearly in arenas--tell me a little bit about that. What's the first thing you do when the gates open and the arena match has started?
W: I analyze the composition and specs that we are facing to determine what the best strategy would be.
N: Is there a group composition that you find particularly difficult to deal with, and how do you react when you're faced with it?
W: Warrior / Druid or just Warrior / healer teams in general are extremely difficult to deal with. I briefly discuss whatever strats we've had limited success with in the past, and hope our opponents make several errors.
N: So how did you got about becoming so skilled in PVP? Is it primarily due to having a lot of experience, or do you spend a lot of time reading websites to learn different strategies?
W: I started off by reading websites, such as Arenajunkies, watching a lot of PVP videos, and talking to other highly rated players. But it took a lot of experience to start putting things into practice.
N: Very cool.
N: How do you feel about the current state of Warlocks in PVP? I don't pay much attention to the stuff, but it would be hard not to hear people complaining about how bad our class is in that area right now. Are the complaints justified, or is it just a lot of QQ?
W: Warlocks are currently in a poor state for PVP, particularly with our vulnerability to melee classes, and our squishy pets.
N: So what would be your advice to a scrub like me, or to any Warlock without much PVP experience who wants to start melting faces in arena right now?
W: To Succeed, or are you asking me for viable comps to run?
N: Whatever you think is most important.
W: I'd ask the Warlock to gear up with a decent amount of resilience (800+) and pair up with a good priest healer for 2v2. Try to go with Rogue / Warlock / Shaman for 3v3, and the standard 2346 comp for 5v5s. I found PVP videos very helpful when I first started arena, they're an excellent tool that will help a new Warlock to learn a lot.
N: Awesome dude, thanks for all the information! Anyway, I've kept you quite a bit longer than you said you had time for, so I'll let you go now. Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me.
W: No Problem.
I have to admit, I'm tempted to take Whiteshadowz up on some of his advice and try my hand at PVP now. I know a holy pally who might be interested in doing 2v2s if I can manage to get my hands on some resilience gear and some skill. Probably won't be able to get my hands on any of the latter, but hey--a 'lock can try.

Finally! the First time there's been a decent interview with a good lock on the insider (at least that i could find)
With pvp locks in such a terrible state atm, it's really interesting hearing about the people that make it work despite the difficulties.
Yeng May 19th 2009 11:22AM
Warlocks were quite prevalent in the Arena tournament with the DK/Holy Pally/Lock comp. Just check out the rankings here:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/pvp/tournament/news.xml
Would be interesting to have seen an interview with one of those top rated teams in the bracket.
Cool Story Bro May 19th 2009 11:41AM
@Yeng
One of the reasons that Lock/DK/Holy Pally teams were so beast last season (and on the Tournament realms) was because of how terrible warriors and rogues were against DK/Pally and how great locks were against holy pallies. The Europeans tended to use a Hunter instead of a Lock in that combo but it had the same end result. When they both got buffed last patch and DK/Pally/Lock were nerfed (the loss of SL and the fear nerf really hurt that comp) the comp lost a lot of it's power which is why locks are in the state that they are at this point in time.

Nick does a great job, I don't even play a lock anymore and I read all the new blood pacts
klink-o May 19th 2009 11:20AM
Go Tich! Don't let the 5 boxing paly hit you in the face on the way out! :D
Wyred May 19th 2009 11:21AM
This would've been so much better than the Collosseum article we actually got
Hakker May 19th 2009 11:25AM
Yup
Michael May 19th 2009 11:22AM
I'm sorry Nick. While this was certainly an improvement over what I've been seeing you write about, it's still just ok. And that's a problem. Look at the arcane brilliance for mage pvp. Chock full of info and good points. In depth. I feel this was a lame interview. You didn't ask what spec, what openers, how he chains controls, what pets... anything we could've used. He told us to READ. NO SHIT. You basically said hey warlock how do you feel today and that was it. Seriously bro if you don't start getting more information in your posts I will know to just skip your section...
Yeng May 19th 2009 11:24AM
I have a feeling the lock didn't want to reveal his tactics. He seemed to dodge the questions that went in that direction. Not so much a problem with Nick's interview as much as his interviewee.
Michael May 19th 2009 11:26AM
That may be true. But looking back, Nick still doesn't have a very good track record writing about warlocks. He even says himself he's a casual. /sigh
Nick W. May 19th 2009 12:08PM
With one or two exceptions, I stand by my track record. Obviously I want to improve, but I'm not going to turn WoW into a full time job just for Blood Pact.
That said, I was hoping to get a little more out of this post than I got. It wasn't really anybody's fault really. This is the first time I've ever been in a position to do an interview, and a few issues never really occurred to me. So while I tried to find one or two hours during the week for us to do the interview, we ended up only being able to talk for about 45 minutes a day or so before the post was supposed to go live.
Needless to say, next time I do an interview I'm going to apply what I learned so that we're not rushed for time.
rich May 19th 2009 1:23PM
I actualy like the format, not everyone needs tips on how to play. Seeing a post that covers more than just "use this spell after your spec this way" is refreshing and interesting. If you are looking for solid game tips maybe mmo-champ or EJ is more usefull than WI.
Kylenne May 19th 2009 1:27PM
Nick, with all due respect, no one's asking you to turn WoW into a full time job just to write a column. I don't think any of the premier class columns (IMO, Druid and Mage) on the site have writers that treat WoW like a full time job. The problem is, quite simply, your readership is demanding deeper info and analysis than you're apparently able to give. As a writer I know how frustrating it is to have your work ragged on, but if that's the type of attitude you have, maybe it's time to give the column up to someone who can better service the needs of the warlock community on WoW Insider.
I really don't like being so negative because you seem like a really nice guy, but I've only had a lock since about January and I've gotten very little of value from these columns. If it wasn't for Warlock's Den I'd probably have gone back to my mage full time.
Moloko May 19th 2009 1:58PM
OMG! NO! Please don't take your omnipotence away from us! What ever shall we do?
STFU
Nick is doing a great job. His writing skills are the tops, and he has said several times that subject matter is a learning process for him.
I've seen it here before - if you want raidLock... EJ is thataway ->
I'll keep reading Blood Pact till the day my eyes bug out of my head from all the NEEDLESS and INCESSANT QQ because XX didn't meet Mr. ASS's exacting standards.
Michael May 19th 2009 2:00PM
lololol you all get so serious over my critique of his review.
lockanon May 19th 2009 4:04PM
Ok....
You say you are getting tired of his "so-so" writing; fine, everyone is entitled to their opinions. But, please stop reading his article if you find no joy in it. I personally enjoy it because of the enjoyment I get from the rest of WI. This is not Elitist Jerks, nor is it the Warlock's Den, this website is more about the actual player behind the monitor, not the pixels on the screen. If you are looking for number-crunching and rotations for getting the bestest DPS ever, you are not looking at the right site.
To be completely honest, the only thing I'm beginning to get tired of on this site is all of the readers that come here to bitch and tell the writers that they cannot do their job. WTF is that? Stop reading it then!! Go find or MAKE a site where you can do all the crunching and comparing you need to. This site even links the sites that they get their info from if you want the in-depth analyses, for God's sake. THIS IS A MORE CASUAL WOW SITE, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU DO NOT WANT, DO NOT COME HERE!!
BIGGEST MESSAGE OF ALL: THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO PLAY!!! THIS IS A GIANT GAME WHERE YOU PLAY HOW YOU WANT. PERIOD!!!!
Anyways....
Nick I enjoy reading your articles, as I am a casual Lock as well, and I realize that this game is about the enjoyment of the game.
Ignore these QQers, because you will never satisfy them until you start listing the rotations and try to turn us into clones of one player.
Sylargrey May 19th 2009 4:57PM
Just to be clear I'm not complaining about number crunching or rotations like many are. I'm simply upset at this interview. Yeah this is for casuals and that's awesome! But no advice that could even help a casual was presented in this interview. It's like I said he basically had a conversation with him and nothing was answered/asked/pushed out of the guy to be even remotely helpful. I don't care for the best possible stats/rotations always. It's good to know. But SOME helpful information, or tips, or advice to the casual player as you suggest were LACKING from this interview is my only point.
elfennau May 22nd 2009 8:25AM
While it may or may not have information useful to the (obviously) already experienced locks, I still find these articles sometimes informative, and nearly always entertaining. But reading for entertainment seems to be a dying hobby, so I guess the comments aren't unexpected, though still rather sad.
Cool Story Bro May 19th 2009 11:26AM
I went to his armory and he seems to have both the Haunt/SL and the CB/SL specs. Did he by any chance mention when he would use which spec and why?
envious May 19th 2009 11:28AM
Really? This was like reading a casual golfer interview an olympic sprinter. You asked only 2, maybe 3, useful questions.
Here's what you should have asked:
1. What spec performs best in each bracket?
2. State of double DPS with warlock in 2v2?
3. Gearing for spell damage, crit, or haste?
4. What do you think about the new Wintergrasp trinkets?
5. Any specific tips on beating the warlock counters (rogue, warrior, ret paladin)?
And so on...
Basically, I don't believe that a warlock reading this article gained any practical knowledge about what to actually do when the arena gate opens. When he answers "I analyze the composition and specs that we are facing to determine what the best strategy would be," you should have asked him for specifics. That kind of advice is unbelievably broad and applies to all classes, not just warlocks, and is the kind of thing that should be obvious to anyone who's played a video game with a versus option.
