WoW.com FAQ is up and running

We have had many questions today, which has helped us refine our Help Guides, and prompted us to write up a FAQ. Because this is a Beta test, you can expect that we will add to it as the site develops.
We would also like to request that before you send in your questions and bug reports, you check out the aforementioned official FAQ to see if we've already written up answers.
And don't forget to hop onto Twitter, because we're using our page as a platform for giveaways, news, and launch-related information!

Cripes.....now this site has been "Joystiq'd"!! It took a while to get use to the changes over there, I guess I can adapt over here as well.....

Has the addon/application been approved by Blizzard, regardless of the .exe it contains? Once it officially is, I will use it.

Heh. Thanks for the FAQ, it's much appreciated. :) Also, love the new look.

While I think your hearts are in the right place-- Seriously?
You need a FAQ for a web site redesign? I know it's free, and I'm thankful for wonderful articles I read here. My loyalty to the site won't change. . . but . .
Seriously?
I know how exciting it is to release a new product or format, but when something isn't ready it just isn't ready. The right thing at the wrong time . . is the wrong thing.
You could have at least run spell check, or showed the site to Grandma before releasing it to your fan base- forcing them to beta test your new shiny.
Many people here criticize Blizzard for being too ambitious with patches. "Create now, fix later" is rarely viewed as acceptable. . . but here you are with "!"s in your addon, creating FAQs for your website, disenfranchised European users, crazy-intrusive advertisements, a deal with Satan (aol) and a marketing plan that seems as coherent as "ADHD on ice"
I'm not saying the site didn't need change. I'm not claiming to have all your answers . . but I think if you'd leave "shiny" mode for just a moment, and see it from a user's perspective, you'd have handled this entire transition differently.
Of course, this is MY opinion. I don't expect you to share it. It's my hope that it doesn't fall on (heh) "deaf" eyes. :P
I wish you the best as you continue forth with your launch, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE learn from this.

woohoo twitter contests...
some of us don't buy into the whole Web 2.0 fad, just remember that...
if I want a social networking service, I'll go to one.

Sadly, I don't have any trust for AOL executable so the addon is a no-go for me. They've had a way of sneaking their terrible software into PC's for a long time.
Now, riddle me this: why do I need an executable to install an addon? :P
Rich May 20th 2009 6:15PM
LOL I hear ya there. Most of the AOL executable are poor written and kill machine performance. I had to do a complete reinstall on one computer because the AOL Parental Control program screwed it up so badly.
FifthDream May 20th 2009 6:29PM
Because you'd have an unimaginable amount of QQing and people asking "HAY HAO DU I ISNTALL ADDON!11!!" if you didn't. There already is, and the exe does it for them.
Ryan May 20th 2009 6:36PM
Your exe doesn't work on my x64 machine, even once the ! is removed. Now that I know it is an AOL app, I am glad it doesn't.
Keyra May 21st 2009 2:46AM
I'm not certain that I would go so far as to say that it is an AOL app per se; however, considering that WoW Insider has ALWAYS been owned by AOL...
Meh...
However, I have yet to be spammed, and I've been posting on this site for nearly a year. My new profile uses the same email address, but it's listed as an "alternate" when I signed up for my new profile, and never once did it ask for a primary, so we'll see.
On the other side of things, the app does upload a tremendous amount of information with the default settings, so I'm wondering just how long it will be before they have server-space issues. A two-to-three hour gaming session with all of the items selected? Yeah...over 150 posts to my blog - everything from what quests I've just completed to what zone I'm currently flying over on a gryphon.
The one thing that I DID NOT like, though, was that it automatically mined my account name and populated it. It didn't look for any password information, but still...that sort of sent up a red flag. I'm not so much worried about keyloggers (I know that the WI team wouldn't dare do something as underhanded as that), but still...

Exe won't work on any of my macs either.
GryphonStalker May 20th 2009 8:25PM
I like the de-cluttering and darker look.
But dang I haven't used any of my old aol / aim accounts for many a year now.

Any chance you guys can set up the pages like how Wordpress does it?
Hypothetical example:
regular article link
http://www.wow.com/2009/05/20/wow-com-faq-is-up-and-running/
shows all articles posted on May 20, 2009
http://www.wow.com/2009/05/20/
shows all articles posted in May 2009
http://www.wow.com/2009/05/
and so on for 2009
On WoWinsider its much harder to find posts I missed on a certain day. I have to page through all of them hoping to find stuff I missed. Other blogs that don't support changing the links that easily usually have archive links on the side with last day, last week, last month, etc.

Is there any paln to format an i.wow.com? Or any other mobile version?

Just a comment on your new text and background. While the text on the main story is readable, the text in the comments is verging on unreadable.
Contrast is the thing and black text on a dark grey background (especially since the text gives a very thin font at that size) has very little contrast.
What ever happened to white or off-white or don't you have any ergonomists or screen design experts in there?
SDevil May 21st 2009 4:28AM
I'm having no trouble with the exe on a 64 bit systemm at least not the first few times I synced today. Although, it should be noted I'm running the windows 7 beta, and it seems to be more forgiving in a lot of ways than vista.
As for the addon and the exes. You don't have to install using the setup, I just copied the whole thing to my addon's folder and renamed the exe inside it, taking off the !. Once that's done the exe it comes with for syncing, doesn't require an install at all, it's a small stand alone thing.

I, personally, don't like the new look.
The foreground clashes way to much with the background. Blue, black and then this...whatever fade of yellow/white is, it just looks awkward now.
Same with the font changes for comments, much to large.
Though the comment fading is now better because you can actually read the comment instead of squinting and being annoyed.
I guess we'll see if I warm up to it in the coming days.

nice
Jon May 21st 2009 9:25AM
The app isn't working properly, I have tried to sync numerous times and nothing appears on my page.
Desvelra May 21st 2009 2:28PM
It looks nice and thanks for the FAQ
