There's plenty that can be done, like having point values for turning in a flag decay over time. Instead of three captures, make it so the first to 300 points wins with flag turn-ins starting at 100 points each and dropping over time. The poison idea is a good one too. Also giving a debuff to the flag carrier that starts after, maybe 3-5 minute, then grows as time passes. Perhaps also a less powerful debuff aura for units friendly to the carrier. All of these would give the carrier a reasonable time to make a break for home base or hide for a bit. If you want epic battles, you can always go to AV or Wintergrasp. I don't really think anyone enjoys 90 minute Warsong turtles.
