One of the things I never forgot in the run-up to
patch 2.3 was seeing the photo above from
MMO Champion. This was before the
Cenarion War Hippogryph went live, and it was the
faction's new (albeit expensive) reward for reaching exalted.
Boubouille, as so often happens, datamined a bit more than what Blizzard actually permitted to go live, and the skin at the top left was what wound up being the Cenarion Expedition's flying mount. Sprinting for the CE quartermaster when the patch hit and discovering that that was the only model available (and that it couldn't walk) was a bit of a let-down, to the point where I decided to wait on buying the mount in the forlorn hopes that the other mount colors and animations would go live. Quoth the female Tauren, moo hoo hoo.
Since then it's become apparent that the
hippogryph at top right became the
Argent Hippogryph (score!) and the one at bottom left is now the
Silver Covenant Hippogryph. That some of the Tournament daily quests award Silver Covenant/Sunreaver reputation makes me suspicious that the hippogryph and
Sunreaver dragonhawk are eventually going to be rep mounts. That still leaves two hippogryph skins "left over," and you've got wonder if they're going into the game -- and if so, in what capacity. EIther way, there aren't words to describe my happiness at not being consigned to the ugliness of a wyvern (the airborne version of Tauren cat form) forever. I'll grant that my main is a Druid so I had a ready escape anyway (and I thank thee daily, Blizzard, for thy boon of total win in the guise of
swift flight form), but sometimes a girl likes options.

I would do just about anything for the one in the bottom right hand corner. The blue one is quite nice too.

"moo hoo hoo"
HAHAHAHAHAAA.
I'm stealing that for my main (female Tauren hunter). And yes, I'd be more interested in buying a hippogryph if they actually had a standing/ walking animation. I don't think the Argent one has a stand/walk animation either. C'mon, guys, you can just copy the gryphon movements.

The pinkish one looks as though it fits in with the Draenei / Azuremyst color schemes - I had been hoping the Argent Hipppgryph would be the white one to complement the snowy mounts from Dalaran. Hopefully we see the Tournament expanded soon to include more flying mounts.

wowasitstands you should do your homework. The wyvern goes back to ancient Celtic mythology, not to the Blizzard design room.

What's interesting to me about the AT mounts is that now we've finally seen what High Elves use for mounts, unicorns, which brings them closer to the realm of playable IMO. Though that is probably just wishful thinking on my part.

I think its not so much a matter of planning ahead, but rather using assets that are there. To make the color variations probably takes them a grand total of 10 minutes in Photoshop. It wouldnt make sense for them to spend so much time on the mesh/animation of something like that without putting as many textures in there to reuse it for future things.
I think quite a few things in the game have multiple colors/textures and aren't used. They're there 'just in case'.

The Silver Covenant and that blue one are gorgeous!
I hope both make it as player-obtainable mounts in the near future

I desperately want the Silver Covenant 'gryph. I've been madly in love with it since the first time I saw it at the flight point in Crystalsong Forest.

I don't like Blizzard's new way of distributing mounts. They make a new mount, then they make 5 or so different colors of said mount, then make each of them almost impossible to get, then they take a lunch.
I liked the Netherwing model. It wasn't easy and afterwards it felt like an accomplishment (Anyone else remember gettting pwned by Mulv about 78 times before beating him?), but at least you knew that it could be done, and afterwards you had your pick of whatever color drake you wanted!
Now we have Proto-Drakes...which are basically Netherdrakes 2.0. Except to get a Proto-Drake you either have to be a lucky bastard or be part of a hardcore raiding guild. There's only two that are even remotely attainable for the average player, the Red and Violet Drakes, and I don't even like those colors! I would prefer a Blue Proto-Drake...but Blizzard decided to be dumb and make it a crazy low drop rate off of a Heroic boss. Seriously...that shit is okay if the mount is a freaking Phoenix, but if it's just a recolor of a mount everyone else is already riding why should I be punished simply because I like the color blue?
Colors are colors...it should be up to the player as to which color they want to choose baised on their personal preference. As we speak there are probably people riding Green Proto-Drakes that hate the color green. Of course there are "special colors" and flavors of a mount such as Black, Plauged, Rusted, and Iron-Bound, but the basic colors such as green, blue, and red shouldn't be nigh-unattainable. That's just my 2c.
Deadly. Off. Topic. May 27th 2009 11:31AM
I like most of them, but that pink one is kinda peeerty.

And six weeks later - You sure called it Allie. As everyone knows, Silver Covenant Hippogryph and the Sunreaver Dragonhawk will indeed be added as reputation rewards.
As for the two leftover skins, MMO-champion reports that an unknown (or rather un-named) flying mount has been added to the new ptr build - the pink Hippogryph - the one at the bottom right.
The blue Hippogrypf is the only one left.
