Old Azeroth through rose-colored glasses
Sometimes denial works for you, and I think that's why I like this forum thread so much. It's full of nostalgia for a simpler time, when PvP meant going to Southshore and murdering some Alliance, when the encounters in Molten Core were the most epic thing in the game, and speaking of epics, when seeing a player outfitted with all purples meant that they'd be raiding for weeks with 39 other people. This thread willingly looks back and sees things not as they were, but as we remember them: super fun, refreshing, and completely empty of the problems and quibbles we have to deal with today.Of course, Azeroth's past wasn't really like that. It was hell organizing 40 people to do one boss, much less a whole night of raiding, and if the organization didn't get you, the server lag and disconnects would. Southshore and Crossroads PvP made for great stories, but in actuality, it was really just a zerg fest, and no one actually won, it was really just everyone throwing away their nights because there was nothing better to do. And epics -- well, it was actually pretty cool when epic gear meant something. But boy was it disappointing when you went whole weeks of raiding without getting any loot at all, without even a Badge of Justice for your efforts. Or when you had to disenchant a tier piece because the Paladin set dropped yet again.
Do we want to go back to those days? Probably not -- while there are definitely some good things about them, there were all kinds of issues that have since been solved (and that many of the nostalgists tend to forget about). But every once in a while, it's nice to look back through rose-colored glasses and remember when.

LOL
Yeah tell me about - there are still plenty of geniuses on my server who obviously have NOTHING better to do than F with lower level players in Southshore and corpse camp......

* Hybrid classes all relegated to a single role each
* Five-minute blessings
* No group versions of buffs (at first, at least)
* No tier tokens (as mentioned)
etc.

And I almost forgot -- out of combat rezzing!
LOL.

Consecration requiring 20 points in Retribution
Blessing of Kings requiring 30 points in Retribution
Divine Strength requiring 25 points in Holy
Retribution and Enhancement having tanking talents in them for some reason.
Survival being a melee tree
The first tier of Subtlety being +stealth level, +stealth speed, and -stealth cooldown
Not even a nerfed Titan's Grip
Fire Mage + Molten Core = /cry
(insert your Vanilla WoW class balance gripe here)
Oh, and in order to fully create the Classic Vanilla WoW experience, all people who play Classic WoW servers will have their graphics settings rolled back to 2004-level technology, all Vanilla servers will run at slower speeds and be less stable, and people who play Classic WoW will be unable to view blue posts, because you didn't get dev feedback back then.
Not to mention that they'll have to roll back all the bug fixes they made in Burning Crusade and later.
My estimate is that official Vanilla servers would be abandoned within a week. A month at the most.

Leveling 1-60 took the average person 6 months real time.
And it was fun.

Back when druids would never shape shift cause EVERY druid was a healer and tree form didn't exist.

Oh god the "gief Classic servers" threads are growing like crazy atm on the German forums, the arguments are mostly misty-eyed, romanticized views of "better times", no one can admit that while it was great for that time, it wouldn't work at all today.
Moppentoff May 22nd 2009 1:23PM
This can also apply to the RP realms, where you'll hear all the old fogies ranting about how new content has ruined RP and how it was better Pre-BC. I joined a few months into BC myself, but I know that Wrath is considerably better for raiding, PvPing to an extent, and even RP.

I gotta disagree with the Crossroads experience. Dishonorable kills were incredibly annoying, particularly the first time that your reputation was tarnished by some unknown, over-zealous member of your PuG raid. However the occasional 40 man plus battles were simply incredible.
In all honesty, the first time I experienced this my PC lagged to death and I had to leave. However this was really my PC's fault and an upgrade later, I was able to cope with such environments.
It was like the first time walking into Ironforge and seeing the sea of blue name tags above other players, world mass PvP gave a sense of community and belonging.
I don't miss the long BG queue times, but recognising familiar faces (outside your guild and faction) on your server has something to be said for it. There was no elitism in a PvP raid, quite the opposite. If anything when a weaker player was ganked, it rallied everyone together to kill more of the enemy in response.
It was in these environments where you could actually see other great players on your realm in action and back them up. Even the lowbies would try and help at the risk of a gy run, just because of the sense of camaraderie.
Yeah I do miss spontaneous realm based world PvP. WG is simply not the same.
Xino May 22nd 2009 1:33PM
Completely disagree on the pvp elitism. Back in the day when you entered a BG you wouldn't automatically be put into a grp with the everyone. Because of this premades excluded many and since there was no honor system they felt they had all the right to do whatever necessary to keep their weekly rank.
Wither May 22nd 2009 1:53PM
@Xino
I think, in fairness, the truth lies someone in the middle. You're right, the auto-group in BG was a great fix.
The point I'd like to make is, yes, there have been hundreds of great improvements in the game and there were lots of serious problems in "Old Azeroth". On the whole, the game is far, far better now and yet, there are some things from the old game I still miss and prefer. Decent realm based PvP being one of them.

When DK meant Dishonorable Kill and you risked losing your PvP rank/title. :P

I think this post hits the nail right on the head.
I definitely have those moments where I look back and think "Yeah, vanilla WoW was so much better...". It's sort of like people saying that the 80's were awesome and how much they hate current times. The 80's probably were awesome, but if you'd go back now it wouldn't be the same. (For the record, I'm not one of those people, but I have a lot of friends who are).
Especially when you talk to newer players it's sort of satisfying to be able to say "Oh yeah, classic WoW. Those were the times - you should have been there".
But as this post says, when you break it down vanilla WoW had just as many issues - if not more - than what we have today. That's why Blizzard won't do "classic" servers. It would give people a harsh kick in the butt back to reality, and they would be swarming back to the "real" servers in no time.

To this day I still hate going into Blackrock Mountain. BRD, LBRS, UBRS, MC, BWL way to much time spent in that one mountain.

I think everyone is forgetting about the best part of Vanilla WoW.
No Blood Elves.
manicstreethero May 22nd 2009 3:44PM
Blood Elves were part of the lore of WC3. I'm more oncerned with the addition of the Draenai, aka the 'let's take the Broken and make them into a player race forcibly'

And this my friends is the best comment on this thread.
