I think, in fairness, the truth lies someone in the middle. You're right, the auto-group in BG was a great fix.
The point I'd like to make is, yes, there have been hundreds of great improvements in the game and there were lots of serious problems in "Old Azeroth". On the whole, the game is far, far better now and yet, there are some things from the old game I still miss and prefer. Decent realm based PvP being one of them.
