Bolfang and the future of the Horde and the Alliance

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Wrathgate in-game event.
So Callouse of Vashj posted a theory on the General Forums that is so elegant that I'm sort of ashamed I didn't think of it myself. At the Wrathgate, we know that Arthas absorbed the soul of Saurfang the Younger into his sword. Evidence also points to the idea that he stole Bolvar Fordragon's body. This has lead to rampant speculation that we will eventually fight one or both as thralls of the Lich King.
But Callouse posits that we may end up seeing one and both at once. That is, we'll see Saurfang the Younger's soul in Bolvar's body.
This does a few things. First, it sort of ties the new Death Knights together with old in a neat little full circle way. The first Death Knights were created by Gul'dan by imbuing death human knights with the souls of Orc Warlocks. With Arthas creating what might possibly be his last Death Knight in this "old" style, it brings the story of class together in a final way.
Secondly, it opens up some very nice story possibilities assuming this combined being, whom we shall call "Bolfang," is redeemed instead of killed. With Horde and Alliance animosities at an all-time high, Bolfang would be in an unprecedented position to mediate between the two factions. Since his human side is like a brother to King Wrynn and his Orc side is the son of one of Thrall's most trusted advisors, he has an inside line with the two major figures of each faction.
In addition, since Bolvar and Saurfang would in theory share their thoughts and knowledge, their combined life experiences would give them unique insights into each side, and give them a good chance of being able to communicate across cultural barriers and find a way for each side to understand the other. If Saurfang the Younger has even half the wisdom of his father, this is almost a given.
That said, there's a lot of people (myself included, admittedly) who would like to see this Horde-Alliance struggle continue instead of being resolved and forgotten at the end of this expansion. Luckily, there's still a chance for Bolfang to find a new place other than peacemaker: As Highlord of the Ebon Blade.
But wait, you say, we already have Darion Morgraine? I'll be honest here. Darion's sort of a downer. He's so busy being angry and vengeful that there's much else to him. Right now, Death Knights in general have a singular fixation on Arthas and the Scourge. But there's little indication of what happens after Arthas dies. Where do the Death Knights get their purpose? What do they do? I'm not so sure Darion can provide that. He's a somewhat one dimensional guy who just appeared out of a comic book, stole our thunder on the whole Ashbringer questline, and suddenly appears in game as the supreme lord of an entire class, one who spends most of his time brooding.
Now enter Bolfang. Both of these men are not only noble and tenacious, but again, have very strong ties to the Horde or Alliance. Not only is Highlord Bolfang a chance for the Knights of the Ebon Blade to start fresh and shake off the doldrums, but his close ties to the factions can help him manage and shepherd the Horde and Alliance Death Knights have begin to direct them to find new purpose as members of their factions and soldiers against the next great threat to Azeroth.
Bolfang's also sort of nice in that all of this development, no matter what form it takes, can be shown on screen involving two beloved in-game characters. This is less true of Bolvar, since his crowning moment of awesome has been retconned out of the game, but there's still enough of us old-timers around who remember his glory days to give him some love. And regardless, all of this development going on in novels and manga gets old sometimes. The prospect of having a major lore twister like Bolfang get developed and make his debut solely in game would be quite a treat, especially if we get another trailer to go with it.
Kudos again to Callouse for thinking this theory up. I'm really sort of hoping now that Blizzard goes this route.

Wasn't Bolvar's body incinerated by the Red Dragonflight?
richard.ashton May 23rd 2009 2:10PM
Technically the flames of the Red Dragonflight bring life, hence why it is the ultimate weapon against the undead, and why there are flowers around the Wrathgate.
Mailia May 23rd 2009 2:11PM
If the Scourge didn't manage to pick him up before, yes.
Clbull May 23rd 2009 2:17PM
Actually, wasn't he killed by the Forsaken? The ones who fired their plague catapults into the crowd of undead and alliance/horde fighting during the Wrath Gate cinematic.
I think the Red Dragonflight incinerated the area after. I don't think Bolvar's soul was absorbed by Arthas.

There was a bug at some point which allowed players to read Draconic, and thus what Alexstrasza said at the Wrathgate.
"Alexstrasza: [Draconic] They must not discover the fate of the young paladin. Not yet. "

Yes it was, he saw the Dragons coming which was AFTER the Lick King (Arthas) had fled the scene.

I'm doubting this "Bolfang" theory. I look to the Yogg fight for insight on this.
During the Lich King vision, we have an image of this Immolated Champion being tortured.

Note, Bolvar's pants. It doesn't explain how the Lich King got Bolvar, only that he currently has him. The Dragons did fly away after toasting the ground, after all. Ample time for someone to run in and grab the bodies before
But, later on, we hear the Lich King mention "I will break you... as I broke... Him"
An Orc death knight in battle-armor walks up and salutes. Sound like anyone we may know? Found out about this on a MMO champion thread, it's really quite interesting. I'll have to grab a screenshot of this myself. Maybe see if I can find out for certain who this orc is.

@lightning4
Thank you for finally linking to that model. As a caster, I haven't been able to see the visions yet, outside of poorly made strat videos and listening to the sound files. I didn't even know about the orc death knight. Does anyone know the name of that NPC?

"There was a bug at some point which allowed players to read Draconic, and thus what Alexstrasza said at the Wrathgate."
Oooh, I read about that bug when it happened, and I just thought it was kind of funny, but you know, it sure is convenient... what if Blizzard created that "bug" on purpose, to leak this speculation?
Players were supposedly never intended to speak or understand Draconic at all, right? But note that Draconic isn't a real language: http://www.wowwiki.com/Draconic. (I don't know if any other languages in-game are really languages rather than substitution cyphers either, but that's not the point.) But if there were truly no intent to have people speak Draconic, they could just not create any translation in the game files for it. So the designers do intend for SOME players to read Draconic at SOME point... why? What else has gone on where it would be needed, other than this?

I present to you... Turned Champion.

The face is a match... not many other orc champions are known, let alone one looking like that.
Seems like we have the answer on both of them. I guess Saurfang's will was a lot less strong than Bolvar's.
I wouldn't rule the theory out quite yet though. Both Bolvar and Saurfang look rather... ghostly. But that could just be a side-effect of Yogg's vision. My question now is, what possible influence could Yogg have on the Lich King's torture and turning of Bolvar and Saurfang the Younger?
Kvothe May 23rd 2009 2:13PM
The main reason I don't think this will happen is because Blizz would want to have the two of them as two separate bosses in ICC. Also, Bolvar's body was burned by the Red Dragonflight, so what Arthas got is probably only Bolvar's soul.
They also don't want to have the Alliance and Horde get all close again. They are purposefully thrumming up tensions in Wrath because the whole "The other faction isn't the bad guys; the Legion/Arthas is" thing has gotten them too close together.
Lykofos May 23rd 2009 2:13PM
The Scourge would have been incinerated as they tried to pick up Bolvar's body. Undead and Fire do not mix as the Undead make great firewood.
Esoteroth May 23rd 2009 2:16PM
The game hints that a different fate awaits Bolvar that the dragons are hiding from us, so i doubt we'll see him as any form of undead, anyway Arthas barely managed to drag himself away, and while he stole Saufang the younger's soul with Frostmourn he made no such contact on bolvar
elstor May 23rd 2009 2:17PM
Enough of the redeeming crap. Everyone we fight in Icecrown dies, the end.
Thander May 23rd 2009 2:18PM
Assuming this Bolfang is true, I just don't see Blizzard redeeming him in the story. I think it's going to be a tragic ending. Both sides, Horde and Alliance, see one of their heroes in him and want to try to save him. In the end both sides decide he must be destroyed. In this case he is only a mediator indirectly for getting the two sides to work together to destroy the Lich King. After he is killed, the two heroes' spirits are at rest.
I see the remaining death knights as the new conflict between Horde and Alliance. Right now, they are being ignored as they help against the Lich King. Afterwords, they will be almost like the forsaken. The Horde will probably accept the death knights having already accepted another dead race but the Alliance will have trouble fully accepting them. This is where the conflict will be between the two sides. Neither side agrees what to do with death knights.
Of course being a class in the game, the death knights can't be destroyed. The next expansion will probably come out just in time before the Horde and Alliance are in all out war.

Interesting theory. In dungeons the players have only had to kill members of the opposing faction (in the Nexus and Thorim fight in Ulduar). But what if the Horde had to face Saurfang and the Alliance Bolvar? That'd be a twist...

I have to say, the whole DK/Forsaken thing confuses me.
Forsaken: "Hi, I'm your great-great-great grandfather. I was a powerful warrior and a Marshal in the forces of Lordaeron that fought against the Scourge, however I fell in battle and was raised to serve Ner'zhul, or as you know him, the Lich King. Afterwards though my own strength of will I pulled myself free of his dread control while he was weakened, and went on to clear all the Scourge from Lordaeron, Tirisfal, and the Silverpine area, and I helped to push them back and bottle them up in the large area now known as the Plaguelands. I am here to lend you my many years of experience as a powerful Warrior, to train and lead our armies, and to watch over my descendants."
Alliance Human: "AAAAAH! A zombie! killit-killit-killit-KILL IT!"
Death Knight: "Hi. I am animated the soul of one of the original Orc Warlock conspirators that helped Gul'dan rise to power, slaughter many of the Dranei, feed the Orcs Mannaroth's blood, and unleash them in their demon blood-lusted rage upon Azeroth, where we killed lots and lots and lots of you. We also helped out Ner'zhul, you know him as the Lich King, to raise lots of demons and undead to kill you, and we founded the school of Scholomance to train even more necromancers and to build more constructs to kill you. Oh, and we have been working to undermine all your organizations with our own doomsday cults, plus the Shadow Council has organized many groups of hostile native creatures to kill you all, like the Cult of Twilight and Twilight's Hammer. I'm possessing the body of one of your great warriors sent to kill me. He was killed on the field of battle. Oh, and I'm here because I found out that Ner'zhul basically didn't care if I lived or died, even after I killed so many of you guys, I should rate better than that, right? So, even though I'm directly responsible for pretty much almost everything horrible in your world, I'm going to hang out here, okay?"
Alliance Human: "Sure! No problem brah!"
...?
Eisengel May 23rd 2009 6:01PM
Maybe not original Orc Warlock conspirator... but maybe scared witless villager who decided to take the winning side ... still... accept them back into the fold why?
devilsei May 23rd 2009 6:10PM
also Eis, you are thinking the deathknight class we play is the original Burning Legion edition. Wrong. Play a deathknight and listen to the cinematic intro. The Lich king raises strong warriors and turns them into death knights. You died fighting, and the lich king, recognizing your prowess and capabilities would be wasted as a ghoul or other common lackey, rose you as a death knight. You later break free. Thats why the deathknights we see now are referred to as "Second Generation". Thats also why the newer ones have memories of their former life, like all undead, or rather, Forsaken do.
The Deathknights you are thinking, wanted to become what they did. Orc warlocks freely gave up their body to have their soul implanted in that of a knight. That ended up with a heavily armored, strong body, and all the dark knowledge that the warlock commands.
Grubba May 25th 2009 2:24PM
@Eisengel
Your analysis skips the crucial point of, you know, what each wants to do.
Forsaken: Oh yeah, and we hate pretty much everything that isn't Forsaken. We're plotting ways to kill you all.
Death Knight: We want our revenge on Arthas. We don't really care about any of the rest of you.
Suddenly the reaction of the humans seem so much less confusing.
