Maintenance and Restarts for May 26th
We have a maintenance announcement for Tuesday morning, but it's a little weird, so bear with me here. First, starting at 1 AM Pacific, the Authentication server will undergo maintenance. That means if you have a battle.net account, you won't be able to log in. But hey, we can hope this'll take care of all those unable to log in problems later, right? So anyway, that lasts about 4 hours, until 5 AM Pacific, at which time rolling restarts will begin for all realms, lasting for no more than fifteen minutes per realm, you know the drill. But wait, there's more! A handful of servers will be going down for a 3 hour maintenance window from 5 AM to 8 AM Pacific. They are as follows:
Caelestrasz
Proudmoore
Aman'Thul
Frostwolf
Silver Hand
Frostmourne
Kilrogg
Tichondrius
Blackrock
Dreadmaul
Dath'Remar
Barthilas
Kil'Jaeden
Thaurissan
Sen'jin
Nagrand
Vek'nilash
Ner'zhul
Khaz'goroth

all oceanic servers are in that 3-hour mantainence..
uncaringbear May 26th 2009 2:32AM
...as well as the servers in the Bloodlust battlegroup. Sigh.
kia May 26th 2009 3:02AM
No they aren't. Jubei'Thos and Saurfang are Oceanic servers, and they aren't in that Battlegroup. =)
Magma May 26th 2009 2:46AM
I'm starting to regret going to battle.net account..
Emoroan May 26th 2009 3:06AM
I only upgraded because their other authentication servers were down, I was hoping that the battle.net ones had a bit more redundancy though.
Gemini May 26th 2009 3:06AM
Did it occur to you that the reason they're taking down the b.net authentication server, in the middle of the night when less people are playing, in order to PREVENT future unexpected b.net login failures?
Xanwryn May 26th 2009 3:25AM
Depends where you're from. I live in New Zealand, 8pm isn't exactly early in the morning for me and it's the only time I get to play substantially. Either way I don't really mind since I'd only be on for few hours before being kicked off for maintenance anyway.
And regardless, even if I hadn't gone with merging my Battle.net account now, I wouldn't be any better off. I'd have to eventually, or so they say.

The 3 hour maintenance couldn't be scheduled at a worse time for oceanic players.
Shorno May 26th 2009 3:24AM
But wait - if they take the Oceanic servers and not the US ones, won't it cause the end of the world as we know it? Which is why they can't do maintenance on Oceanic realms at 5 AM Oceanic time.
Except that we now see that they can take down the Oceanic servers separately to the US ones, at 10 pm Oceanic time.
Bananacup May 26th 2009 6:36AM
No they can't, all the players from US realms would just flock into the Oceanic servers while theirs is down, I know I would (i'm Australian but I play on Perenolde), causing huge queues and lag.
Of cource whenever this is mentioned it is ignored and somehow it is still blizzard's fault. Like everything, I guess.
Shorno May 27th 2009 1:00AM
Yes but you would do that because you live in Australia and are being shut out of the game at 8 or 10 PM.
Are there REALLY that many 'Mericans desperate to play at 3 or 5 AM US time??
I used to play on a US server back before there were Oceanic servers. One of the reasons I jumped ship as soon as the Oceanic servers came up was because there was never anyone to group with in the Australian evening. Anything you couldn't solo often remained undone. Because it was sparrow-fart o'clock US time, and all the Septic Tanks were in bed.
Also, anyone who did this would have to create a new character on an Oceanic server, in order to play it once a week at 3 AM. And, since the point of the exercise would be to have the Oceanic servers down at 3 AM Australian time, that character would not be available from say 10 AM to 3 PM US time on maintenance days. Which isn't when I play, but it seems a more likely time than 3 AM for most people.
Also, I'm no tech nerd, but I'm pretty sure that confusers on teh interwebs can tell each other's vague locations using, like, technology and stuff. I reckon Blizzard could indeed shut off the Oceanic servers to these alleged hordes of American No-Doz addicts, even if it aint economical to actually move the servers to Sydney or Singapore or Auckland.
Frankly I think the size of this army of the unsleeping is overstated, and that the Oceanic realms could cope with a few American insomniacs and shift workers.

So when the authentication servers go down, will I get dc'd for having a battle.net account or just be unable to login if i were to logout?
I'm just wondering because i have 1/4 of a level to hit 80 on my mage so I was hoping to squeeze that out before bed.
I gotta hurry!
kurisu628 May 26th 2009 4:25AM
Sooo...no battle.net account and mains on a server not on the list means just a rolling restart?
It's looking like a good WoW night here in Tokyo!
Todd May 26th 2009 4:58AM
Bah, it's not going to be a good wow night for me in Hamamatsu.
I have a battle.net account w/ authenticator :-(
Codexx May 29th 2009 6:28AM
Wow, just wow.
The login server goes down for 4 hours and it only affects people with Battle.net accounts. The idea that supposedly there will be no more login issues does not console me. In fact, I've yet to be inconvenienced by it, and I've heard more complaints about it going down for non-B.net accounts than for the converted ones.
Mumlock May 26th 2009 5:27AM
Fix the RSS feed - please!
Luke May 26th 2009 6:12AM
I don't have a B.Net account yet my authentication seems to be down as well. Seems weird and kind of sucks as I was hoping to play a bit this morning.
pscof42 May 26th 2009 7:06AM
So much QQ
This sort of thing happens every Tuesday and people are still surprised and enraged?
Leeisl May 26th 2009 11:32AM
"Something happening with regularity" is no excuse for people annoyed by it, you make it sound like "surprised" and "enraged" aren't mutually exclusive you know?
sprout_daddy May 26th 2009 8:13AM
"First, starting at 1 AM Pacific, the Authentication server will undergo maintenance. That means if you have a battle.net account, you won't be able to log in."
Isn't this just the normal state of affairs with a battle.net account? It is with mine.
