World of Warcraft on Windows 7 RC

The installation and configuration of Windows 7 went very smoothly. For the technically inclined, my computer has four gigs of RAM and operates off of two dual-core Intel Core2 processors. I have an nVidia GTX 260 graphics card, which is the latest generation. There's a bunch of other bells and whistles that I have as well, but those are the big things relevant to what I do every day here at WoW.com and how I play WoW.
Prior to installing Windows 7, I used Windows Vista updated to the latest patches. I got about 60 FPS on average, with a maximum of around 100 while idling in some far off place with not a lot of traffic; and a minimum of about 50 while in some of the more graphic intensive raids / battlegrounds. After installing Windows 7 I was running at about 75 FPS average, with a maximum still of around 100. However more importantly my FPS during raids / Wintergrasp shot up to 70.
This is obviously in part due to the upgraded hard drive (the one I had previously was about a year and a half old), but there's no way an older hard drive would cause a 20 FPS decline. Given the previous observations, it's safe to say that Windows 7 contributed significantly in increasing my in-raid FPS.
In WoW, all my settings were at their maximum, with the exception of the shadow setting (which was set to one below the max setting -- setting it to the max position after patch 3.1 caused stability and extremely low FPS issues for myself and several others).
How does this rank with other operating systems? I can't really compare it with my Mac that I have, since the hardware is significantly different. My Mac is 21" Intel iMac running a single dual core processor with a substantially less powerful video card. I can get about 40 FPS max with my Mac.
I did however, install the latest version of Ubuntu Linux on my Mac and ran WoW through that. I found I got around 55 FPS on average through the Ubuntu system. It should be noted however, that while my graphics card is supported, I get the distinctive feeling it's not supported entirely. There is some choppiness that shouldn't be there. This could be a result of minor misconfigurations within the Linux system itself, but if there are things misconfigured it's so buried in the configuration files I wasn't able to find it after an hour of poking around.
When I ran WoW on Ubuntu on the same computer I had installed Windows 7 on, I achieved frame rates of around 65 FPS. It should be noted that for the purpose of this article, I had all non-essential services turned off in Linux (no database, web server, etc...). On Windows 7 the default services were more or less the only ones running.
So roughly speaking, WoW runs better in Windows 7 on my systems.
Overall I would highly recommend that anyone who is thinking about reformatting their computer or just wants to take a new OS for a joyride go with Windows 7. It's much more stable than Vista. Generally I would find some way to crash Vista once or twice a day. Windows 7 has yet to crash.
*We should note that while Windows 7 RC is free now, it will eventually expire next year. Please do your research before you install this or any other modifications to your computer system.

Any chance of a link to that wallpaper? =P (Not trying to derail the comments, but the wallpaper is quite sick)

I got it from 4chan's high res board or a newsgroup or something like that. I have no idea of it's copyright status so I don't want to link to it :/

I don't see that particular one here, but here's some Win7 wallpapers:

ADAM LURKS 4CHAN!?!?!?

It looks very similar to Greg Martin's work. It may not be his but he definitely has wallpapers that can compare to this one.

Yes, I would love a link to that wallpaper. It would replace my current one in a second

That's at least 3 internetz for Adam then.
LURK MOAR!

That wallpaper can be found around www.deviantart.com, there was one time where I was looking for Aurora Australis and Aurora Borealis and I got to see that pic in a really great quality if that works for you

I Believe the wallpaper in the screenshot is this one:

@vwvstarboyvwv: 4chan itself isn't a problem, it's certain boards that are. Most noticeably, the Random board (or /b/ as most know it by) is by far the worst board on 4chan. Many of the others are pretty fine (just don't go to Animated GIF or in fact, any of the R18 ones lol).

The sad part that if anybody is playing WoW on Vista, they shouldn't hesitate to format and reinstall Win7 RC. It's niiiice. It's what Vista should have been and the stability hasn't wavered for me yet. I'm not going to replace XP on my gaming machine until Win7 is out, and take into accoun that Win7 RC will deactivate next year. Try it out on a few boxes, but I'm going to wait for release to throw it on boxes that I care about at the moment.
I want to see some benchmarks: Core i7, 6gb RAM, etc... Somebody post them up!
Middleman May 29th 2009 3:18PM
To be honest 6Gb isn't going to do you anything. I run 3 and I never seen windows use more 50% of my total ram while playing, and that's with running a web browser in the back and several websites open in different tabs. Now running multiple clients would be a different story but then you have to worry about whether your running 32 or 64 bit windows so you can support more then 3Gb of Ram.
Now a more powerful CPU would make a difference but don't forget the video card.

I'd replace Vista with Windows 7 RC, but I heard that you can't just go and buy Windows 7 when it comes out and plug in your key. You'll have to reinstall everything over the RC, so if I'm going to reinstall, I'll stick with Vista until 7 comes out. Though, I've had zero issues with Vista - I think if you have just a little bit of common sense, you can avoid viruses, bugs, and other things and Vista will run quite smoothly.

I been running WoW on WIndows 7 RC 64-bit.
Although the game itself runs at the same 60FPS, the biggest improvements are:
1. Load times. Logging into Dalaran is MUCH faster on Window 7 64-bit.
2. Alt-Tabbing to the desktop for other programs, like Vent or a web browser is practically instant. There's no delay.
I have made up my mind - I'm NEVER going back to XP or Vista again! As son as the WIn 7 RC expires next year, I'm buying the OEM version!
ElderDruid May 29th 2009 4:13PM
Actually 6GB on 64-bit Windows is VERY beneficial, particularly in Vista, which caches everything.
Heck, I can play WoW and run several 1GB VM's at the same time on VMWare Workstation and have no slowdowns whatsoever.
I like knowing that I can throw pretty much anything at my machine and that it will just eat it up.
Netherscourge May 29th 2009 4:14PM
Benchmarks:
Intel i7 920 Quad-Core @3.2 ghz
6GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia 8800 GTS 320
I get 60FPS everywhere in the game except Dalaran and Wintergrasp - but compared to my old Socket 939 AMD system, my PC isn't a slide-show anymore during a heavy WG battle.
I'm more interested in Diablo 3 and how that will run at this point :)
Gridneo May 29th 2009 5:05PM
@NetherScourge totally agree... You could bump up your graphics cards, and it'd be over the top awesome. When I mentioned 6gb of DDR3 I was literally talking about peaking the computer out, and it's 6gb or bust. The NVIDIA 300 series stuff will be out soon enough, so I can't wait to see it.

im on a 3.5 GB ram with a dual core prossesor 512KB graphics card (some nvidia thing:P) i can run upto 4 warcraft and have music through youtube and im smooth maby in 50 FPS
im on XP atm never liked vista always asking for permistion and the new features are mostly trivial for it
