The Art of War(craft): The future of Battlegrounds II
Why bother?
Why is it so important that Battlegrounds have some form of rating? Isn't Honor gain enough? Well, yes and no. Honor is a great, if grind-heavy system for acquiring gear. But as many players have pointed out, no amount of Honor will grant access to higher tier gear, which require Arena ratings to obtain. Not all players appreciate being "forced" to play Arenas just to get the best PvP gear, but Blizzard's stance on the matter is rather unassailable: dislike it as some may, Arenas give the most accurate barometer of PvP skill in the game right now.
The Battlegrounds can be abused by unscrupulous players who sit through matches while AFK, soaking up Honor they don't deserve. The reporting system in place helps alleviate the problem but doesn't eliminate it, as it's all too easy to get into combat and continue being AFK. As I mentioned, because Battlegrounds are the domain of casual PvP, a rating system might not be entirely welcome, either. When playing in a Battleground, I could, for example, leave my computer for a short while to change my daughter's diapers and return to the game without missing a beat. If everything I do is rated, time away from a match will likely impact my rating negatively.
This was part of the reason I couldn't devote as much time to Arenas as I wanted to. Aside from finding teammates on the same page and relative schedule, I have to be on call to help out with my daughter. As you can imagine, this disrupts momentum and can put my team out of sync with potential farmable opponents. Ratings puts a certain kind of pressure and seriousness in Battleground play that won't necessarily improve the experience.
What's certain is this: Battlegrounds as they stand now cannot be made to give access to the current PvP season's best gear. There just aren't any controls to ensure that the players deserve it. From experience, most players I've talked to either love or hate Arenas. Some play it only because it's necessary to gain access to better gear, while others don't play it at all. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are players who thrive in Arenas and abhor Battlegrounds, playing it only to grind the Honor necessary to purchase non-set items.
What then?
Will some form of rating system inside the Battlegrounds be in place for Patch 3.2? I'm certain the boys at Blizzard are working on it. But the undertaking is just too big and I can't begin to imagine how they can implement proper gauges. If their Children's Week Achievement is any indication, Blizzard doesn't even seem to have a proper grasp of Battleground dynamics quite yet. I mean, if ratings were awarded to a person who caps the flag in Eye of the Storm, for example, it will disrupt the game dynamic because players will be focused on trying to capture the flag instead of holding on to towers (a higher priority).
Likewise, their change to Strand of the Ancients indicated that the developers might not even play the Battlegrounds. The difference between Battlegrounds and Arenas is that the map objectives change the dynamic of the game more than a deathmatch format ever will. This is why I think organized Battleground groups would be phenomenally fun, but I fear that the numbers -- specially for the larger maps -- will simply be too unwieldy to guarantee success. It's a good bet that any system that rates Battleground performance will measure individual players rather than simply by teams.
Trust Blizzard.
Kalgan has already stated that Blizzard "would love for players to be able to get high-end gear from the Battlegrounds," and that it's "something that will definitely factor into our plans for the future." He said this back in October 2008. Blizzard has said that Patch 3.2 will bring the focus back to the Battlegrounds, which means that the future in question could very well be in the upcoming patch. He reminds players that "Arenas were never really meant to become quite as much of a focal point for the overall pvp game as they have."
There's no question that it feels like PvP balance revolves around Arena representation, and Blizzard knows it. But making rated Battlegrounds is a simplistic solution that just isn't the right answer. Not entirely, anyway. Kalgan explains that it would take an inordinate number of games in order to determine an individual player's skill or contribution in a Battleground environment. Compare this to the minimum 10 games to qualify for Arena points. It's going to be tricky, but trust Blizzard to be up to the task of coming up with a solution.
The exciting thing? The Argent Coliseum promises something entirely new in terms of 5-mans and raids. Ring of Blood-style event-driven instances and raids? That's a pretty neat idea. What does this have to do with Battlegrounds, you ask? Well, if Blizzard is trying to shake up the PvE experience, it's not much of a stretch to imagine them doing the same with Battlegrounds. I know all they said about Patch 3.2 was that Season 7 would pave the way for all-new items and challenges, but the optimist in me takes that as a hint of an entire tier dedicated to Battleground rewards.
Patch 3.2
Whatever happens with Battleground barometers, the good news is that Blizzard has gotten an insight into what makes a Battleground fun. After all, their success with Wintergrasp is what ultimately crippled it. This makes me extremely positive about the Isle of Conquest. Signs point to it being a large scale Battleground, as Zarhym described it as "Wintergrasp combined with Alterac Valley with a few more twists." It will be a blast, I'm absolutely positive of it. It's going to be the biggest instanced Battleground since Alterac Valley, and by all indications will be reminiscent of the epic scale of Wintergrasp but without the lag. Lag-free Wintergrasp is a recipe for pure win.
The Isle of Conquest is only what we know so far, as well as Zarhym noting that Blizzard wants "all of the Battlegrounds to be as close as possible with regards to Honor gains," and that they are going to tweak "the length of individual matches in every Battleground to be roughly the same." Aside from those, I'm also hopeful that Patch 3.2 will introduce some landmark changes and mechanics to the Battlegrounds. My best guess would be that the next major content patch will allow leveling through PvP (if not necessarily the Battlegrounds), introduce a rating system that rewards good Battleground participation, and a whole tier of gear associated with the Battlegrounds (perhaps even the return of faction-specific gear!). Am I being too optimistic? Absolutely. It never hurts to be hopeful.
Zach attempts weekly to write about Arenas, Battlegrounds, and world PvP in one column. He asked if Wintergrasp was doomed by its own success and talked about how Season 6 is the best season for casual PvP.

I find lower level pvp with twinks more fun and balanced than end-level pvp. Blizzard can make it more fair by introducing lower-level pvp gear that are best-in-slot and purchasable by Honor.
Also, Blizzard should give a player the option of turning off experience gains so a player can just press a switch and that character can stop gaining experience.

i hope they make new titles for battlegrounds not the old ones though as cool as they are (and i wish i had one) it wouldent be fair to the people who do have them already but ya i do BG's alot my fav part of the game and it would be cool to have a title to show that , also i miss how in pre -bc the battleground gear took time and effort to get you needed to be a certain rank to even be able to buy it and then u needed lots of honor and marks but it was worth it. now u just need a little bit of honor and arena gear makes it look like crap but dam do i hate arenas

I don't mind arena, but the battlegrounds is where you really cut your teeth in pvp, so it would be nice to see them get an update. Especially if they can implement the epic feel AV used to have while keeping it relatively short and sweet. Leveling through pvp would also be a blast.
themightysven Jun 1st 2009 8:24PM
I would love a faster way to gain rep in battlegrounds.
also nice would be a way to get arena points while leveling.
and if wishes were fishes, smaller brackets (like 5 lvl spans as opposed to 10 lvl spans would be sweet)

Experience from pvp will never happen in wow since blizzard only cares about pve. This was brought up during BC and the same we will consider it stonewall came up. Guess what its never gonna happen. As for new bg it will be nice but pointless since all honor one can get from it is unusable because of the stupid arena requirements on items(should be axed screw elite arena players there is like 20 per server). Unless blizz pulls its head out of its arse pvp will remain a dead stagnate POS where only bored scrubs BG and OP classes and Dbags elitists in arena. Heck tokens from strands are still useless(the fact that they still havent fixed who starts first shows how much they care about BGs and real pvp).

you make no sense....
Kind of hard to express you point with that convoluted and confusing post.

I am all for FORCED XP gains in BGs. Twinks have had their fun stomping on other's, now its time it stopped.
Irshalthra Jun 2nd 2009 10:47AM
Most twinks don't care to stomp on the average player. First and foremost it is the joy of building the character. Getting all the cool gear from all over the map is honestly exhilarating. Respeccing over and over to find the right combination of talents is a nerd dream.
Secondly most of us are out there to win a BG from the opposite evil faction, not out to pwn level 17s. It is a competition and we want to win. True the 17 could go down if he gets in the way of winning, but when most of us target we look at the HP bar. There is no honor to me in pwning a 400 HP no matter what level.
I do understand the frustration when getting into a BG against a premade - you simply stand no chance. A LOT of this frustration is due to the organization they possess as opposed to the gear they possess.
Twinking took a HUGE hit and is at a manageable level currently. I feel this was a great move on their part. Now Blizzard needs to concentrate on keeping pugs from going up against the premades. I am hoping to see any group (4 or more ?) having to go to a special premade BG to fight as a group. Frustrating for the premades as far as wait times, but fair to all AND much better competition.

I wish Blizzard would decide to add some BGs of the same mechanics but different maps, it would be nice, for example, to queue up for say "CTF" and it drops you into Queue for Warsong, and like 2 other CTF maps. A few more maps would add some great variety to BG PvP imho.
Irshalthra Jun 2nd 2009 10:51AM
Nice idea - Random Map Generator FTW.
Javic Jun 1st 2009 9:56PM
How bout this one?
Experienced gained by wins and losses.....IE Exp gained by a Honorable Kill, but then lost by a Death....Exp gained by capturing a flag and lost by not defending and having it taken away. Obviously the actual amount of Exp would have to be adjusted or set to a sort of seesaw system where in an Overall Win a certain amount is won regardless but not to a BG'er who has died repeatedly and have put forth an overall bad effort defending and capturing. IE I kill 2 players (500 exp) Died three times (-750 exp) Flags Captured and held for lets say 5 minutes (1000 exp) Overall Victory (1000 exp) I walk away with: 1750 Exp for that BG. This is a small scale but you get the idea.
Javic Jun 1st 2009 9:57PM
And obviously not entering combat 0 exp and boot if not involved in combat for more than a 1 minute span.
Keleron Jun 1st 2009 11:38PM
I think your idea is good, but it would need to be tweaked a lot, because no one would defend nodes that are not being attacked.
Kris Jun 2nd 2009 6:50AM
So you're one of those wiseguys who goes off to attack another node even if your team already has 3/5?
Javic Jun 1st 2009 9:59PM
Well maybe that wont work but I'm just shooting the wind you know! :)

I think that BGs are fine the way they are now. Although the article brings up interesting points, I think BGs should remain EXP-free. I like having two choices in my everyday repetoire, either PvPing for honor or questing for EXP. If I want to, I can take a break too and switch it up. If EXP becomes availible in BGs, then Blizzard will be making it like everything revolves around leveling. Noobs that want to stay noobs should be able to. If there is a toggle switch that lets you turn on EXP gains, that's fine and all, but then I think the game would be too easy. I mean, honor AND EXP? What would be the point of standard questing then?
Lemons Jun 1st 2009 11:24PM
Rated...Battlegrounds? As if arenas aren't stressful enough, and now you want rated BGs too? If you started rating BGs then everyone would premade and all the games would last at least an hour. Plus BGs are a safe haven for those that just want to have a good time regardless of the quality of their gear. If you start rating BGs then they're going to be shunned from that element of the game as well. Rating BGs will only make them just as hyper-competitive as arenas and everyone hates arenas (most likely for that reason).
No. Rating BGs is a horrible idea all the way.
R Jun 2nd 2009 12:02PM
Totally agree. I'm on a PvE realm, and had never done any PvP on my main. I wandered into a BG by mistake on an alt (luckily a pally) and had no clue what I was doing. 3000+ kills later, I love BGs because they're relatively stress free. Aside from the occasional hardcores in them, everyone's in a BG just to kill the enemy and have a good time. Some of the people that are the most fun to group with are the ones lower on the charts, honestly.
I haven't gone anywhere near arena because of the rating factor, and I'd hate to see BGs go in the same direction.
Keleron Jun 1st 2009 11:38PM
Rated BGs are not really the way to go. There is a lot of problems with arena.. as the article stated many arena players play only to get the best pvp gear. I love battlegrounds.. bgs are more WARcraft than Arena which is nothing but a sport. They should make a totally different type of pvp gear for bgs. Arena could be heavy on resilience and BG gear could be a mix between pve and arena maybe. Yeah I know there are those that might not deserve the honor gained by afking but why should we be punished for their wrong doings?
Either way I am really excited for the new bg. The classic bgs are still my favorite, but this sounds like it could be really good. A cross between wg and av!? Good stuff!!
Ziboo Jun 2nd 2009 12:48AM
I'd love to see XP in the BG's implemented, along as there is a way to protect the twinks too (off button would be easiest!). Once you've leveled up thru the kill 10 tigers, bring me 8 teeth... it would be nice to be able to level doing BGs. More gear that is pvp specific available with honor would be nice too!
Having played the scenarios in Warhammer, it was nice to be able to level that way as well as pve, especially for those of us that enjoy pvp. Nothing will replace world pvp, but as it's hard to find in any game, I'll take BG's over arenas (queue up for my 10 to get my gear) any day.
As for the ratings, that seems a bit hard to carry off, healers vs tanks vs dps contribute differently. How would a healer in AV be rated? Must heal # amount, but not be healing self or pets or ? Tank must kill x#? DPS must crank out so much damage? It would be hard if there are not team ratings. Individual BG ratings could be interesting, but as an example in Warsong Gulch, the FC is going to contribute very little in general as far as damage or healing, but they're achieving the objective. So ???
What would be nice to have in some of the BG's (I'm assuming there are a variety in the works) would be a timer in some like the scenarios in Warhammer. It's nice to know that turtle won't last forever and 15 minutes you can be out and questing/grouping or queueing again.
More maps/more variety would be nice too!!!
Ultimately glad it's in the works!
