Spinksville, following up to
an earlier post concerning a great lore moment in Vengeance Landing, concludes that as a Horde player, Howling Fjord
has emerged as the single best overall zone in Wrath. The more I consider it, the more I'm inclined to agree with her. The Fjord has a mostly unified questline that slowly splits off into sub-plots concerning the Kalu'ak and Taunka, and the farther you get, the more you realize the impact your previous actions have had on that little slice of the world (and most of it's not good). As Spinks observes, it's a very immersive experience that does a great job of conveying both the moral ambiguity of the Forsaken's position, and the fact that Northrend's a continent without a lot of good options. "Forced to choose between the lesser evil and the greater evil," she writes, "... you had better hope that the greater evil is very bad indeed because it is the only way to justify the things you have had to do."
That said, I have to admit that Icecrown is also pretty tough to beat lore-wise (with the
Matthias Lehner quests being a particularly good touch, and please don't click that link if you haven't run into him yet). I haven't yet played an Alliance toon through Northrend, and Spinks is also a Horde player, so I'd like to get some input from Alliance-side players too. Is the Fjord as good for Alliance as it is for Horde, or are your best questlines elsewhere? If you're Horde, do you agree that the Fjord was your best questing experience?

Two words (and a symbol).
Tundra > Fjord.
Flaming harpoon surfing cannot top the awesome that is the blue dragonflight, Keristrasza, Murlocs, and Thassarian.
Granted, I'm Alliance.
For the overall of Northrend, I'm quite fond of Dragonblight.

I really liked Tundra as Alliance. The Gnome quests are a huge improvement over the Outland Gnome quests, and even though they at first seem like a silly joke, they turn out to have a larger truth that relates to Ulduar.
And the Murlock quests are amazing.
I really liked Grizzly Hills too, though. I remember the first time I went to Amberpine Lodge. It was night time and the scenery was beautiful. And the Drakuru quests are epic.

I completed all but a handful of quests in Borean Tundra on my main, with the majority of Howling Fjord remaining open to my highest-level alt.
While some parts of the Tundra are interesting, the zone is fragmented -- lacking any prevailing theme, and rife with anachronisms. Between DEHTA and the Fizzcrank gnomes' goofy escapade, I began to feel a little ennui until I swung by Howling Fjord and then plunged into the Lich King quest chains in Dragonblight. As an introduction to Northrend, Borean Tundra was, for me, underwhelming.
But that's just me. I recommend starting in Howling Fjord while giving Borean Tundra a try, too.

I agree. Borean Tundra has better quests and is MUCH easier to get around.

Fo' Grizzle My Shizzle. Harrison Jones ftw.

As alliance, agreed. I -loved- the Tundra. The Fjord, though, has been utterly horrid.

I completley disagree. I think the tundra is the worst zone in wrath. The quests their are just boring.
I really like the fjord. In terms of lore is way better, but there's alot there you can miss. I think the #1 thing I saw leveling my DK is the amount of stuff about Ulduar there is in the Fjord. The Tundra is a bit about Malygos, and not much else (ok, theres mechagnomes, but thats it).
Both have an appearance by the Lich King (Tundra = Last Rites, Fyord = kill Ymirion's Queen).
Overall the best two zones have to be the storm peaks and icecrown. I put storm peaks on top because of the bronzebeard reunion, but the Mathias Lerner questline is probobly the best questline in wrath.

My favorite is Zul'Drak. I love those thorny trees, the music, and trolls.
Hansbo Jun 4th 2009 3:13AM
As a hordie, I must say that I love the Fjord. However, the eastern part of Dragonblight, the part where you quest from Venomspite, is better than any other quest experience I've had in WoW. My jaw dropped when I did the New Hearthglen chain.

I'm an Ally, and I hated the Tundra. Granted I did most of the quests there at 80, but it was still boring as hell. I loved the Fjord though, a beautiful zone with great quests, I loved the Vykrul quests.
Eisengel Jun 4th 2009 5:32AM
@Hansbo
Definitely. It was fun going in there with my DK after I had been through the area twice before. Set speed to walk and trudged down the main road directly into the fortress leaving a trail of destruction in my wake. Great fun.

For alliance the Borean Tundra is a better experience then Howling Fjord, however I did enjoy doing quesst in hf as well , the first place to got for me is bt.
The area has got better infrastructure HF is a pain for alliance to travel.
I like Dehta, Murloc, Thassarians quests best, I agree with the critics that it seems to have a lot of small themes but this way you get a good taste of northrend..
But Dragonblight catches the atmosphere if nortrend best. Veteran of the Wrathgate ftw!
rosencratz Jun 4th 2009 8:19AM
I totally disagree.
Borean Tundra has been my most uncomfortable and least enjoyable questing experience in the whole of northrend. Coldarra was cool but i take pleasure in the fact i'll never have to visit that zone again.
I've said it before but, hell! just looking at it on the northrend map, it looks like someone simply vomitted on one side of the continent... it even has carrots in.
I also don't think the Nexus instances are comparable to the Utgarde Keep ones.
I guess it's just a personal opinin but i found the Howling Fjord experience for alliance far far superior than any other zone let alone the Tundra. Just zoning into that place on the boat impressed me, when you sail past the icebergs, through the massive canyon where a flaming ship is chained up threateningly above, the zone has lots to see and do and it all feels "deep".
The zone is beautiful and nicely spaced out i think.
I might be biased as I favour the Vrykul above all other races in Azeroth and after Howling Fjord they just start getting silly when tehy come in zombie and "frosty" flavours. I truelly hope a Half-Vrykul race or exiled friendly vrykull faction comes about to fight with us at some point or at least that humans could have such hair/beard options.
I don't understand why folks prefer Tundra but, different strokes i guess, sign me up as an alliance Fjord Fan! :)
Jon Do Jun 4th 2009 8:56AM
As Horde, I would say that the best Wrath zone is Howling Fjord.
Sholazar Basin would be a close second.
Radiophonic Jun 3rd 2009 8:07PM
I found Fjord to be terribly slow going while Borean Tundra was very nice as all the quests were close together and fun to boot.
Maralach Jun 3rd 2009 8:21PM
I personally prefer Fjord over Tundra, but I enjoy Storm peaks much more than those two. But that is probably because I'm a fan of Titan lore
Colin Jun 3rd 2009 8:17PM
As a huge Tauren fan, I liked the Tundra better than the Fjord for questing, but only because in the Tundra you start the huge questline of inducting the Taunka into the Horde.
Zemro Jun 3rd 2009 8:19PM
I always felt more involved with the struggles in the Borean Tundra over the Howling Fjord, and by extension felt that it lead rather nicely into all the going ons of the Dragonblight. I figure I'll get around to following all the quests through in the Fjord as an Alliance some day, it's just been smoother for me in the Tundra.
MattW Jun 3rd 2009 8:19PM
Dragonblight. Conclusions at wrathgate, time traveling (funny) alternate selves, fights on dragonback, recruiting for the horde... I got loremaster of northrend on my 80, and might of dragonblight is the "sure thing" as far as quest badges go.
Andrew Martin Jun 3rd 2009 8:20PM
I really like the middle zones, Dragon Blight, Zul Drak, Grizzly Hills and Scholozar. Tundra is better than fjord but by the time i have those achivements i usually am really ill about them.
