The Queue: These are a few of my favorite things

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
Today's musical selection for the queue will be the late great John Coltrane playing My Favorite Things in 1961 opposite the piano stylings of the equally great McCoy Tyner. Yes, some people may cover their ears and scream "omg soprano sax!" but others will no doubt spend 10 minutes watching and listening to these master musicians partake in this performance of a quintessential jazz song.Kayri asked...
"A question about the speculation on the next expansion; everyone thinks it will be either The Maelstrom or The Emerald Dream. How will we quest in The Maelstrom? Are we going to swim around all the time?"
We don't know. There was some aquatic mount rumblings when patch 3.1 was on the PTR, however that was mainly for the turtle mount you can get via fishing. It's completely possible there will be more underwater activities if the next expansion is The Maelstrom, as it would certainly fit the lore.
And if the next expansion is the Emerald Dream, I fully expect to be able to jump on a horned Night Elf and ride him around like a Caribou.
Bart asked...
"With all the extended updates, restarts, etc., I was wondering does anyone know what it is that takes 12-14 hours to do each fortnight? It just seems like a very long time to need to have everything offline and I was genuinely curious to know roughly what happens during that time."
The servers are a gigantic group of computers working together with one another. Think of the tens of thousands of people who connect to a server every day. In the perfect world there'd need to be no restarts or maintenance on the servers, but the world is far from perfect. With that kind of load things fail and become worn out, needing to be replaced.
A lot of people say "Blizzard is making billions of dollars a year, why can't they get their servers to work?" Well, that's true. But those people who say that need to remember that no one else in the world is running an operation like Blizzard is. Google and Microsoft have things that are close, but search technology presents significantly different requirements on their servers than a constant input and output of game information to tens of thousands of players at once.
Blizzard uses maintenance time to refine their servers, replace hardware, make things work smoothly, and do other things that would otherwise hamper performance and stability if the realms were live. Web servers are commonly taken offline for maintenance, but you rarely ever notice it because other servers are there to jump right in. However with dynamic and ever changing game data on a truly massive scale, things like that are not always possible.
I also think there is a good and necessary psychological component to having the servers be offline; it forces people who would otherwise play non-stop to get out and have look at the real world. We all know people like that. Ensuring an interruption in their play schedule is a good thing.
Ian asked...
"Should I gem to get the socket bonus?"
That depends on many factors. First and foremost there are one or two key stats that you want to focus on and get them to a minimum level. So gem for those stats until the minimum levels are reached. If you can be creative and get the socket bonus, great. If not, don't worry about it at all.
When you're at the minimum levels for key and critical stats, like hit or defense, then you can start to take a look at the socket bonus and compare and contrast what your overall stats would be like with and without the socket bonus in place. An example: your socket bonus gives you 100 more DPS when the gem you put in only gives you 50 more DPS. If you put in an off-color gem into the socket, you get 140 DPS but no socket bonus. The best option in that case is to put in the 50 DPS gem and get the 100 DPS socket bonus, because 150 DPS > 140 DPS. This is just an example, but it's the kind of calculations you'll need to make if you want your gear to be 100%. Most people do not achieve this level of gearing and just go for the maxing gem strategy where they use whatever gem will give them the most DPS / critical stat off the bat each time (ie: Warriors always stack stam gems).

"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"
What do you mean? African or European swallow?

My favorite colour is blue... no... YELLOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooow
Also, if the next expansion is maelstrom or the like it wouldnt surprise me if the naga pulled a Gul'dan and raised some islands to the surface
Holgar Jun 3rd 2009 2:39PM
I was thinking about the same thing also you have to remember theres a few troll islands and the goblin kingdom of undermine floating out there.

There's been speculation of the next expac being the Maelstrom or the Emerald Dream, is there any reason it can't be both at the same time?
Craig R Jun 3rd 2009 3:34PM
the shared expac thing was a thought i'd had for a long time
Here's my rundown of the apples, the oranges, and both.
Th Emerald dream has the potential for content, but not enough content. Unlike Northrend and Outland, there isn't enough recognizability among the story-oriented playerbase. We know the Green Dragonflight likes to chill there, and we know some bad stuff is going down. That's about it.
The Maelstrom is far and away a more likely candidate between the two, as it allows for integration of unused Azerothian content (lore content and actual unused zone content) to couple with the new Maelstrom content.
As for putting them both together, here's the roadblock. They have nothing to do with each other. Beyond the looming threats both represent for Azeroth, they just don't share a playbill. You'd have more luck getting Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel to share a stage than these two ideas share a box cover.
Just my 2 cents for extremely large values of 2.

@ Craig R
What do you mean they have little to do with eachother, the maelstrom wouldn't exist in the emerald dream and would just be land, because the sundering would never have happened. matbe the devs are sending us through maelstrom to the unseen parts of azeroth. from an rp stand point it would make sense, because only druids and green dragons can enter the emerald dream, so one of those groups harnesses the power of the maelstrom to send the players through. :P
Alanid Jun 3rd 2009 3:54PM
@Craig R the maelstrom and emerald ream are in fact almost DIRECTLY tied to each other. The first portal the demons were making was destroyed by Malfurion Stormrage (who i really hope will make his return if the rumors of maelstrom/emerald dream turn out to be correct) via the emerald dream.
It also makes sense that the emerald dream would be utilized against an enemy where a lot of land doesn't exist. The emerald dream shows what the world would look like if there had been no life, and there are multiple layers to the emerald dream. I could speculate for a long time on this, but in short, the emerald dream and maelstrom are very much connected

I think perhaps Adam has missed the obvious answer to this question. The name "Into the Maelstrom" is simply one that's been bandied about. It's not as if Blizzard has announced such a name or that play would even be entirely focused around such.
Even so, such a name would likely describe the expansions end-game content. Clearly, a "Maelstrom" expansion would be focused around the numerous isles and perhaps even continental areas of the South Seas. We know there are troll kingdoms there, though I believe anything major was destroyed in the Sundering. The goblin capital is in the south seas, and following their faction-neutral history, Undermine would like be the "Sanctuary" of the expansion. Pirate factions could also play a large and interesting role.
And coming to the Maelstrom itself. Queen Azshara is one of the very few remaining arch-enemies, corrupted by Sargeras, dwelling in the underwater Naga capital of Nazjatar. While there are hints in WoW that some people think Azshara is dead, Blizzard would have absolutely no issues overcoming any lore to explain why Azshara is alive and planning her assault on the surface world (or why Blood Elves can be paladins, or why Draenei are annoyed at Arthas, etc).
The south seas/maelstrom have a massive amount of lore centered around them. Far more so than even the Emerald Dream. It is very likely the next expansion will be focused in this area, but don't worry - it won't mean you're swimming everywhere, with perhaps the exception of entrance to end-game content, in a manner similar to Serpentshrine Cavern.

SPOILER ALERT
Further note, as I just finished reading the War of the Ancients trilogy, the text implies that Azshara and her naga were saved by the powers of the Old Gods. Somewhere else (and you'll have to forgive me for forgetting the source) implies that Ysera's battle in the Dream is against the Old Gods as well. Such a theme might tie the two different regions together, though I'd question if they would make an expansion focusing too heavily on that element since it seems doubtful that we've seen the end of their influence in Northrend yet.

"You'd have more luck getting Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel to share a stage"
I wouldn't consider that lucky
Draelan Jun 4th 2009 4:32AM
I see a lot of people commenting about how the Emerald Dream wouldn't have enough content to be its own expansion, but I don't tend to agree. First of all, the Emerald Dream could be potentially massive. It would be Kalimdor without the influence of sapient races (thus, no sundering. It'd be one giant continent) so there's no trouble with it not being large enough land-wise. Also, we know there's something major going down... The nightmare is drifting about the dream, corrupting everything in its wake, and its boundaries are growing. There has been hints that it may be connected to an old god. It would make sense for the major plot to be helping Ysera and the druids try to repair the damage caused by the nightmare while investigating its cause and seeking a way to stop it. This could create a variety of zones, both based on the uncorrupted portions, and zones in various stages of corruption.
But, being a realm without sapient races, where would we get our quests? Well, the two obvious groups would be the green dragonflight, and the druids of the Cenarion Circle (perhaps even shamans, as they are also very spiritual and have a strong affinity with nature, though their realm of expertise is more with the elements). But there could be others! I would not be surprised to find more nature-oriented races, such as the dryads, the sons of cenarius, ancients (tree-like guys, such as those patrolling Darnassus), etc. Also, it's a sort of spirit realm, or realm of dreams. Perhaps you run into spirits of the dead (Cenarius was killed, but his spirit is with Malfurion in the Emerald Dream, so why couldn't other souls reside there?), or people who are asleep. (Maybe they're there only briefly, or perhaps they have become trapped thanks to the influence of the nightmare.)
And given that the Emerald Dream is a realm of dreams, perhaps you could go back and forth between physical Azeroth and the Emerald Dream to help one side or the other, since they are connected.
I'm sure Blizzard is easily capable of thinking up content to fill an Emerald Dream expansion. You must keep in mind that we don't TRULY know a great deal about the Emerald Dream, so there could be much more there than we are aware of. (And even if there is nothing at the moment, the fact that we are only sure of a few details means there's more than enough room for new lore, so long as it doesn't blatantly contradict what we already know.)
Alanid Jun 4th 2009 5:40AM
Don't forget Deathwing, it's been shown in the war of the ancients trilogy that he knows his way around the emerald dream too... which could also be how the old gos are in there i suppose. If indeed it is the old gods.
However i wouldn't be surprised if the emerald dream and the maelstrom will have something to do with each other.

Any news on when the BattleBot codes will be given out for the Mountain Dew promotion? I've looked around even on the Dew forums and wasn't able to find anything. I want to be sure not to miss out on it or that the email didn't get spam filtered.
jfofla Jun 3rd 2009 2:16PM
Once they give us the bots, they know we won't come back to the site.
They will wait as long as possible.
Erogroth Jun 3rd 2009 2:22PM
See, I think that if we had the Bots, then people who have not yet gone to the site would see them in game and go there. If anything, it would get more people going to the site. Plus the prizes are pretty awesome.
Antonia Jun 3rd 2009 4:52PM
They're obviously paying Blizzard for the rights to use the phrase "Soon" cause other then that they aren't saying any thing else.
They made a whole forum section just for questions on their game fuel site about the pet yesterday and didn't really answer any of the questions when they finally made the choice to post something..
So basically keep an eye out for an email from mountain dew/pepsi, I think that's when you know you'll be getting one..

Adam,
Love the column, keep up the good work!
Long live Holy Grail references.
(I actually saw it first release in the theaters. Showing my age again)
eric_barbaric Jun 3rd 2009 2:14PM
I must disagree. Not all warriors stack stam gems. I for one and a fury warrior and tend to stack hit and strength gems.
eric_barbaric Jun 3rd 2009 2:16PM
I for one AM a fury warrior *
