70,000 Death Knights slaughtered in Great Server Downtime of 2009

The correlation between Flame Leviathan being tops or Vezax being tops seems to be a matter of the day of the week. Monday night leading into Tuesday morning, Vezax and Yogg-Saron reign supreme. Wednesday and Thursday when everyone has a fresh Ulduar ID? Flame Leviathan is ahead significantly. Makes sense. 'Risen Ghoul' is consistently near the top, too. Nerf Death Knights plz k thx.
The most interesting stat of all of these this time around is certainly not most dangerous mob, though. No sir. The Most Completed Quests section is hilarious. You can see the effects of this past Tuesday's lengthy downtime for certain battlegroups. How can you tell? Well, the date of the data is when it was uploaded to the site. It's the data from the day prior, however. The data listed for Wednesday (which is what happened Tuesday)? There are no daily quests in the Most Completed like there usually is, no sir. It's the entire Death Knight starter quest chain. Yes, that's right, you can actually see how many people on North American realms rerolled throw-away Death Knights on different realms because their server was down. The very first quest, In Service of the Lich King, was completed 64,152 times.
64,152 people rolled throwaway alts on another server because theirs was down. Surely some were multiples, but just consider that number. Nearly 70,000 new Death Knights were made because people couldn't play their mains. That is not a small number. Most of those characters will never be played again.
When it comes to auctions sold, things haven't changed much in the last few months. Infinite Dust, Saronite, and Runecloth all dance around in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places daily. Runecloth is actually surprising since you don't need it for reputation anymore now that the Tournament is around, but maybe dropping thousands of gold is worth not needing to run endless dailies.
Copper Bars and Soul Shards are still the most created items. I sort of expected Heavy Frostweave Bandages to rate higher than floating around 7th place, who doesn't carry around a stack of bandages these days? Then I asked myself when the last time I used one of my bandages was... and I can't remember. After I have my stack of 20 on a character, I make them just to vendor them when Frostweave prices are down on the auction house. Their lower-than-expected rank makes some sense after I think about it.
Quests Completed is definitely the most fascinating state out of them all. 70,000 abandoned Death Knights due to the downtime of one day. Wow.

what I'd like to know is how much gold the DK noob area generates. In other words, as a possibility, does it generate enough for me to reroll a DK over and over? Kinda like the ultimate daily, ne?
SINisterWyvern Jun 5th 2009 3:41PM
It won't be more efficient than any other farming
zappo Jun 5th 2009 3:44PM
Not really. Two daily quests will far exceed the amount you get from the starting area. Especially considering how long it takes to get out of there (at least 2 hours I'd say)

It generates about 20g if you dont do any lvl training. I have rolled a few DK's with the idea of when they are done, I sell everything I can, and send the money to another toon, probably 5 or 6 times now.

@Jason P
No matter how many times you do it, it's still a fairly bad rate of gold per hour, considering 1 daily can get you 13g and change, plus drops/gathering. I guess it could be worthwhile if you're still lvl 55-79, but probably not.
If it's for fun, that's another story. I've rolled a few DKs on different servers just for kicks.
Culhag Jun 5th 2009 3:37PM
Actually we should look at the number of DKs created on a normal day and substract that from the 65000 created during the downtime.

Did you actually say "Nerf the deathknights"?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!! Some of us have been successful tanks and we keep getting nerfed because Blizzard had the bright idea of a hero class and now they don't want it to have advantages over the other classes. The last thing we need are more nerfs ore we are going to turn into the other worthless class that keeps getting kicked around....warriors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thebvp Jun 5th 2009 6:49PM
DKs were never meant to have distinct advantages over other players, otherwise no one would play any other class except for them.
The whole idea behind "heroic" was that they were supposed to provide a unique playstyle and player experience distinctly different from other classes, as a reward for the time you spent playing WoW.
So get it out of your thick skull that DKs are "supposed" to be superior. They're supposed to balance with every other class in the game, but currently, they don't.
Captainhappypants Jun 7th 2009 11:34AM
My thick skull doesn't believe they should be superior and currently i don't think they are. If Blizzard is so worried about balance then why is it that paladins never get a nerf, they just get to run around as the most overpowered class ever!?!?!?

For each of the last 7 days, Copper Bar is the highest on the Most Created Items list. Why on earth would this be?
Jordan Jun 5th 2009 5:36PM
People are leveling mining on their newly-rolled alternate-server DKs.

OMG How did you know what I was doing?! Are you stalking me? I was doing just that- running the entire DK starter chain to see the story. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to see the story I'd meant to months ago as I wouldn't be able to raid. :) fun times :)

i'm curious to know how many users were effected by the outage that resulted in the creation of the death knights, as a percentage. With 11 million users or so worldwide, maybe 1 million users were effected by the outage(

repost thanks to WoW.com's brilliant comment system!
i'm curious to know how many users were effected by the outage that resulted in the creation of the death knights, as a percentage. With 11 million users or so worldwide, maybe 1 million users were effected by the outage( less than 10 percent, which i think is a reasonable guess) and of those 1 million only 70,000 created DK's? that's what, 7 percent? Not such an unreasonable guess that less then 1 in 10 people got bored enough to roll a DK on another realm. Granted i pulled these numbers out of thin air, but i'd be very interested to know the real numbers. If they resemble anything like what i just guessed at, its really not all that surprising of a number.
Meethan Jun 5th 2009 7:30PM
Actually....
I created mine and I will be leveling it because my friend's on the server. Mark 1 DK on live!!!
The Claw Jun 5th 2009 10:00PM
Actually, I would say Emalon is the most deadly boss, not Flame Leviathan. Bear in mind that you get a combination of deaths to Emalon and deaths to the Tempest Minion adds in that fight, and if you add up their kills, you get 210,000, well ahead of Flame Leviathan.

Bandages? I just recently (within the last week) resumed leveling my first aid kill, from linen bandages up to Frostweave bandages. Guess why I don't move to heavy frostweave, and ding 450? I'm a tailor, too, and I need all those stupid bits of cloth (and infinite dust) in order to make stuff in order to finish that.
