If you read any of these wow exploit sites you'd see why a good chunk of these changes go in. Yes - people were exploiting chests by teleporting to them and resetting the instance. It doesn't sound like a lot of money, but when you have a script doing this to multiple instances 24-7 with multiple characters it ads up. At level 80 - solo'ing these elite mobs with most classes is pretty simple if opening the chest happens to agro them.
