Zarhym explains Druid form colour combos
Doubtless Druids all around the world are still absorbing the new-look Night Elf cat form which was announced yesterday. We know Blizzard was going for something of a colour-coded approach, trying to match skins to that of their owners but what does it all mean? Well, blue Zarhym posted on the forums this morning and went into a little more detail.
It seems that rather than being able to go 'oh I'll have the white kitty with the cut pink gem on it's collar', that your form is actually linked to your toon's physical appearance. Yes, you can easily change how your bear or cat form will look but the only was to do this, in my understanding, is by visiting a barber shop and changing the skin tone (and/or hair) of your Druid in humanoid form.
Zarhym puts it better than I:
"Now that everyone has had a chance to check out the new art for druid cat and bear forms, we'd like to share with you the current break down of Tauren skin tones and Night Elf hair colors associated with each form color. Please note that, while we have attempted to associate each form color as carefully as possible, this list is subject to change before the next major content patch goes live. All options for skin tone (Tauren) and hair color (Night Elves) are listed below followed by the forms that will be associated with each set of tones/colors."

*shrug* works for me :D
Kards Jun 5th 2009 2:34PM
So Night Elf can change their form colors at the Barber Shop while Tauren cannot?
Seems fair, I suppose. :(
Physis Jun 5th 2009 2:47PM
@Kards - When the next patch comes out, Tauren will be able to change skin tone at the barbershop as well.
Also, dark blue NE hair, here I come!
Kards Jun 5th 2009 3:14PM
Whew.
Now to get some Feral gear.
Kadamon Jun 5th 2009 9:06AM
Hopefully my haircolor switchs to the catform I like...I have the color for a reason and I don't want to switch it back and forth constantly.
Unmei Jun 5th 2009 9:36AM
if you read the description at all then you'll notice they actually explain what combo's make what Druid bear/cat colors. =/ So Obviously if the one you want is linked to another hair color chances are you aren't going to get it.
Kadamon Jun 5th 2009 10:13AM
I did read that...but I haven't played my druid in a while and I have forgotten my own haircolor.
I think I'm getting purple kitty with red bear...I was hoping for one of the left cats.
:\
Oh well. The Bear form is the one I wanted at least...lol

And yet some people are already complaining that they can't pick-and-choose which forms they get, but instead are "limited" to certain combos.
These people should not be allowed to get the upgraded forms. They don't deserve the priviledge.
Angus Jun 5th 2009 9:45AM
Because they deserve to be punished for calling Blizzard on not doing what they say they will.
Blizzard has said CONSTANTLY that they won't ship a feature until they are satisfied it is the best they can do on that job. Did they really believe people would want these forms tacked onto hair color? That would have been the LAST thing I would have thought. Did they think female tauren would be gaga over having a male form STILL?
They said they would have to make a bunch of changes to the character code to do it the right way. Well, why aren't they willing to do it the right way? Instead they will go through all the coding issues now and then just never do it the right way or have to go back and fix it later. Neither is a good fix.
They spent how many years saying they were working on the forms and they wanted to do them right? So now given the opportunity they are going to do the job half way and expect Druids to be so grateful over a job done half way that they won't complain?
Seriously, my wife is annoyed because she was one of the few pure black tauren on our servers. The choice was not that common before. The dark skin with the often bright druid gear was a stark contrast and really stood out. Now they will be all over the place. Additionally she would have to choose to change one of the basic features of her tauren to get a different color bear. She doesn't want that.
The barber shop fix was a cludge solution. It is "okay" but it isn't up to Blizzard's high standards. The real solution would have been to do the coding and just get it over with.
Don't get mad when people that have been promised something for years complain when it isn't done right. After waiting that long, it should be.

Blizzard has always said that new features are a careful balance of time/investment vs reward. It was decided that this was the best option at the moment. The alternative would be to simply not have them, at least for a while.
There is always the option of adding it later, but think of how it's integrated into the system already. It's not as simple as "let them be whatever they want".

@angus
Blame the bitching cry of the people.
Which is better? Getting them released this way or them going "oh btw this is what the new models will look like but it'll take us months of coding to get them in, have fun waiting"
Seriously, can people bitch more about getting something better than they have? It's like having a bicycle, getting a car, and bitching it's not a limo. Whiny fucking babies need to realize you don't get everything the way you personally want it in life. If that's too much to handle then give up now.

Don't deserve the privilege?
Privilege?
Are you kidding me?
This is a game, not a religion. One does not need to bow before the great god of Blizzard's Art Department or suffer for their sins.
Based on the sadly large number of people going absolutely batcrap at anyone who doesn't think these new forms are perfection incarnate, it seems clear there are a whole lot of people out there who need to step away from the computer for a good long while.
vocenoctum Jun 5th 2009 11:26AM
Contrast these two responses;
"Thanks blizzard, while not perfect, this is a huge step forward for our druids."
and
"WTF? Why can't blizz get their head out of their ass and make something that doesn't suck"
No those aren't direct quotes, but some of us can appreciate what they gave us without having to bitch and complain about the flaws in it. If you're going to whine whether they do something or not, then why should they bother wasting resources on it?
Zelius Jun 5th 2009 11:31AM
When will people learn that they can't have their cake and eat it too?
Kiros Jun 5th 2009 11:44AM
It only makes sense that your fur match your form. It's about continuity. People still seem to think that word shouldn't apply to games, but does.
Athinah Jun 5th 2009 12:40PM
@ angus
I don't know why people are so upset that its based on hair color, i think its a cool thing, it makes it easier to picture how a druid would transform that way, the night elf hair would grow down and around them making them furry while tuarens...kinda speak for them selfs, It makes since why it would be hair color, deffently would prefer this then just straping me to one bear/cat model and calling it good. I mean it would be cool if there was like some barber shop for druids but now that i think about it, the hole hair color thing is cooler couse its more RP
PeeWee Jun 5th 2009 3:23PM
One spell for each skin, problem solved. Works for mounts, doesn't it?
Arlen Jun 5th 2009 9:12AM
What's this 'colour' you speak of?
Uleaz Jun 5th 2009 9:15AM
UK spelling of 'color'.
Arlen Jun 5th 2009 9:17AM
I know, its just early and I felt like being weird.
