WoW Moviewatch: Candyman
Iryzia created Candyman, a music video featuring the music by Christina Aguilera. The tip about this video comes to us from Nessa, who rightly compares it to Demachic's "Britney Belf" ouevre. And while you may or may not find Blood Elf performers "your thing," I think this is actually a great use of the models. Their elegant hair and broad movements match the genre of the song pretty well.
Of course, I'll admit it was a tad jarring to see the three Blood Elf women dancing and singing it up in the Stormwind auction house. As the video proceeds, though, it becomes pretty obvious that it's just the room being used as a stage. Iryzia's attention to movement, dressing, and setting reinforces the beauty of the video. I especially love her use of red curtains, as the vibrant color helps bring the video to life.
I think Iryzia could produce a lot of cool stuff, and I'm hoping she keeps honing her skills.

World of Warcraft really doesn't give you too many model animations to work with. Some of you guys seem to confuse machinima with rendered wire-frame model animation (one takes a weekend, the other takes a season). Iryzia's real skill here is how closely she was able to recreate the scenes from the original Christina Aguilera video (http://www.mtv.com/videos/christina-aguilera/134914/candyman.jhtml) using the very same WoW items we see everyday.
Sure, it is pretty dull by itself, but if you compare it to the original it's pretty amazing.

OH GOD THERE ARE BLOOD ELVES IN THE VIDEO, THUS IT CANNOT BE GOOD
Get over yourselves, the fact that it's blood elves makes it no worse or better

Maybe so, but if I ever catch a bunch of belfs dancing to christina aguilera in the stormwind auction house, there will be a reckoning, mark my words!

I think this was very well done! Props to the artist, I can't wait to see more from her :] I'd also agree that this is very Demachic, which is a good thing to be.

Is it just me, or are Belf female's hands overly large? A normal hand is about as large as your face (go ahead and put your hand to your face, I promise I won't hit you). If you place the heel of your hand on your chin your middle finger should hit someplace between your eyebrows and your hair line. If you look at about 2:57 you'll see the Belf female's hands seem... much larger than that. I don't know if it's the angle it's shot at or what, but it's a little frightening.
Keyra Jun 8th 2009 1:46PM
You think THAT'S frightening, take a look at the Night Elf hands.
Actually, I think this is intentional. In the cinematic for World of Warcraft (pre-TBC), the Nelf's hands are very thin with elongated fingers, yet we're talking CGI that is (at that time) nearly true-to-life.
Of course, the ham-handed human models in-game...um...yyyyeah.

Normally I dont mind most music. But damn, I could not stand to listen to that for more than 10 seconds. I had to mute it just to watch the vid.
Just wow.. Like a cat in heat wailing while someone reefs on a chalkboard and plays techno in the background.
Lemons Jun 8th 2009 4:08PM
Agreed, does anyone in the world actually sit down and listen to that shit?

At this point, it's starting to go a bit beyond "good belves/bad belves."
There's really not a terrible amount of creativity to this one.
Step 1. Pick pop song.
Step 2. Have belves dance to it.
Step 3. Profit?
There's no hook or twist to make it interesting, and the simple premise is not even presented in a particularly interesting way.
Yup. Here it is. Belves dancing to pop music. What you see, is what you get.
It's rapidly approaching meme-dom, and not a favorable one.

So many of you haters out there acting like you just wasted popcorn and ticket money. Keep in mind, kids, no one is getting paid or making money off these WoW movies. They are the results of the dedicated time someone put into their hobby.
While some of you haters don't get it, the notoriety of Iryzia's Candyman is really about how close it comes to recreating Christina Aguilera's Candyman using WoW animation. I know a lot of you guys are hung up on "oh no, more BElfs.", but seriously there are not a lot of model options. The creator here was trying to recreate to dances, set style, and scene cuts as similar as possible. Of course it's not going to have the same flare as the original. That would be impossible. You get it guys? A Mona Lisa painting made of macaroni has nothing to do with what type of pasta you like or with aesthetics. It's about a painting made into pasta.
The basic reality is that 98% of WoW machinima movies are gonna "suck" if you expect them to entertain you like a TV show. Another sad fact is that many machinima movie watchers are just plain jerks to the creators. Ironically, having fans is sometimes the worst part of it. The maker of Jimmy: A Warcraft Story and Time Gnomes flat out told his fans to piss off and leave him alone about making more movies.

The trouble is in my opinion that she utterly failed to convey the drive of the song. Her belfs - stand there and spam the 'talk' emote. She got the setting down perfectly, I give her that, but compare this video to demachic's 'Circus' - they are worlds apart in terms of dynamism.
uncaringbear Jun 9th 2009 2:46AM
At the end of the day, any machinima has to stand up on its own as a worthy piece of art and/or vehicle of expression. The problem with these belf music videos is that the majority of them bring absolutely nothing new to the genre. Just because someone puts a lot of effort into using limited tools to mimic another artist does not necessarily qualify their work as interesting or creative.
I don't accept the 'limited tools' excuse. You can make memorable and entertaining machinima using very little at your disposal.
Demachic Jun 10th 2009 4:56PM
I think It was Pretty kick-ass.
It's the first time she's put that many models into multiple shots before.
She made a major leap from one Bloof Elf infront of a non-WoW screenshot,
to a Complete cast based in-WoW.
Nice Work! :)
