Two Bosses Enter: General Bjarngrim vs. Sjonnir the Ironshaper

This week's electrically charged boss battle is a real shocker: General Bjarngrim from the Halls of Lightning versus Sjonnir the Ironshaper of the Halls of Stone. There'll be adds and sparks galore in this deathmatch between two Iron Vrykul.
The ground rules:
- Assume that these foes share similar levels, health pools and a comparative overall damage output.
- This match takes place in neutral territory.
- Both bosses will get their usual adds, but Brann Bronzebeard is out of the picture.
- Don't get caught up in game mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.

General Bjarngrim I am the greatest of my father's sons! Your end has come!
General Bjarngrim, the commander of the Unyielding Garrison, patrols the platforms of the first room in the Halls of Lightning. He is accompanied by two Stormforged Lieutenants. The General has the abilities of a Warrior, changing stances and deploying different abilities every 20 seconds or so. His Temporary Electrical Charge increases his damage by 30 percent and poses a nasty threat to unwary enemies.

Sjonnir the IronshaperSoft, vulnerable shells. Brief, fragile lives. You can not escape the curse of flesh!
Sjonnir the Ironshaper was assigned to his station inside the Halls of Stone by Loken, to watch over the Forge Of Wills, which creates Iron Dwarves for Loken´s Iron Army. Known to foes for his Lightning Shield, he is joined during battle by Forged Iron Troggs as well as Malformed Oozes, which merge to become Iron Sludge.
Brann Bronzebeard usually joins the battle against Sjonnir when the Ironshaper is low on life. Because this fight takes place on neutral territory (and because we suspect most readers will consider Sjonnir the underdog in this week's deathmatch), we're going to instruct Brann to keep his nose out of our business. No Brann in this fight.
Iron Sludge
Forged Iron Trogg

The smackdown
As usual, you should assume that overall, the foes share similar levels, health pools and a comparative overall damage output. They fight on neutral territory. We will not be allowing Brann Bronzebeard to enter the fight and assist General Bjarngrim against Sjonnir the Ironshaper.

Does Bjarngrim get to keep his shield? If so, I'd say he'd win.
Rin Jun 11th 2009 9:44PM
The General, definitely. ESPECIALLY if he's electrically charged during the fight. Sjonnir's adds are slimes and troggs and they wouldn't be smart enough to realize that Bjarngrim's helpers were healing them; they'd just keep wailing on the ever-healing Bjarngrim until the general finally stomped out the ironshaper.
Not much of a fight, if you ask me.

I'm with Rin, I give it to the General.

It's funny because the models are almost identical... which one's which?
I swear, if I see one more generic viking I'll turn to Vanguard.
That's right-- *ing Vanguard.

Um, Bjarngrim has healers, Sjonnir doesn't. How is this even a contest? Even if Bjarngrim gets too many adds on him, he can just whirlwind them down in a matter of seconds.
Healers > DPS. Just ask all the arena QQers.

It's sad that the first boss of HoL is up against the last boss in HoS... and the General would win. The General's list of pain is way longer than SJonnir's pitiful representation of what a final boss should bring to the table.

Bjarn.
Question: are the fights for TBE picked at random, or do you guys purposefully pick the match-ups?
Molimo Jun 12th 2009 2:54AM
The only thing remotely "hard" about Sjonnir is having to wait and not DPS him until enough slimes have spawned for that lame achievment, his adds are a joke and so is he.
The General isn't much better, but occasional mispulls have earned him sporadic wipes at least.

Sjonnir's adds are basically ignorable, they'd be swept away by AoE. That leaves Bjarngrim with heals vs Sjonnir.
With heals, this would be a cakewalk for Bjarngrim, dishing out nice damage while having his health stay high. If Sjonnir managed to take down one or both healers, Bjarngrim would still just overpower him. Especially because of the time Sjonnir spent on his healers.

The General Bjarngrim. Especially with the stance switching is wicked. He's got healers -and- he stance dances.
Sjonnir only has a couple troggs to commiserate with afterward.

Bjarngrim, undoubtedly.
When he patrols into Sjonnir (because honestly who hasn't accidentally pulled Bjarngrim while clearing trash?) he is in defensive stance. His two adds beat on Sjonnir for a little while, and thanks to their nifty Electric Charge they get a nice chunk of health off of him before they start clustering and killing the adds he summons. Bjarngrim takes moderate, but not severe damage thanks to his defensive stance. At this point the fight is clearly slanted toward Bjarngrim.
Then the adds start coming faster and the oozes appear. Bjarngrim's adds are dead and Sjonnir has the upper hand, at least until Bjarngrim switches into Berserker Stance and unleashes a Whirlwind (be damned on behalf of all us players), which kills the adds and takes a lot out of Sjonnir. He switches back to Defensive until he gets overwhelmed, and once again - Berserker, Whirlwind, Defensive.
Rinse repeat, Sjonnir dies and Bjarngrim takes the match.

Bjarngrim for sure...he is the greatest of his father's sons, after all. :)

If I knew nothing else about them, I would wage my bet on General Bjarngrim based on how Loked assigned these men. Loken would want somebody who could handle himself but have good managerial skills to oversee an operation like the Forge of Wills. However, he would want to protect himself with some of his most dangerous servants. I'm not saying that, Bjarngrim is just muscle, and Sjonnir is all brain, they're both very intelligent and powerful opponents, but in Loken's eyes I suspect he sees Bjarngrim as the more dangerous opponent in a fight. And I would aggree.
I do not think this would be so one sided as Bjarngrim winning without Sjonnir getting his licks in. The adds would bring some nice flavor, but between whirlwind and chain lightning, they're not going to be much help. What's going to win the day Bjarngrim is his ability to think on his feet to put the most hurt on his opponents. Sjonnir puts too much reliance on his minions. He'll be able to kite Bjarngrim around a little and buy himself time, but still he won't do too much between Bjanrgrim's spell reflect, intercept, and pummel. In the end Sjonnir just can't deliver the same amount of hurt to Bjarngrim as he will be recieving, and Bjarngrim wins.

HE IS THE GREATEST OF HIS FATHER'S SONS. SJONNIR'S END HAS COME.

The Stormforged Lieutenants will Arc Weld everything to the floor, causing them to kill or severely injure themselves, while the General himself whirlwinds the shattered remains. If things get too hairy, the Lieutenants heal the General. No contest. The Ironshaper doesn't stand a chance.
Ilya Jun 14th 2009 3:59PM
I think this fight's over before it even begins.
General Bjarngrim is a GENERAL. Sjonnir the Ironshaper is simply a guard for the Forge of Wills.
The guard of the Forge is definitely easier to beat down, and even if Loken loses the Forge of Wills, he'll just get mad for a while before ordering its reconstruction. Thus, he trusts a dangerous (but not insanely powerful) guard to it.
Think, then, on how he chooses Bjarngrim, a general, to guard himself. He knows that while the Forge of Wills can be reconstructed, he cannot. He KNOWS that Bjarngrim's the more powerful fighter, or it'd be Bjarngrim guarding the Forge of Wills.
Put simply, Loken's trust in Bjarngrim's skill to defend both Loken and himself is greater than his trust in Sjonnir to accomplish the same task. He knows who's the stronger fighter, and as such, we should take note of his choice of 'personal guard' and 'Forge guard'.
General Bjarngrim takes this too easily with sheer strength, intelligence and experience.
