I agree the hard modes are kinda gimmicky. The ones that add a new element to the fight (controlling adds for example) are better than those where the boss just has more HP or hits harder. FL hard mode is a good example of the former -- the more towers you leave up, the more abilities he has at his disposal. XT is an example of the latter... kill the heart and he just gets a HP and damage buff.
I wouldn't mind if Blizzard put in a handful of other hard-mode-only bosses into dungeons, as long as they remain optional and not a significant part of the lore. I dare say Algalon goes against this principle, mostly -- he is optional and is not crucial to the Yogg'Saron lore, but is VERY important to the future of Azeroth as a whole. Still, not as bad as it could be (see: Sunwell Plateau or Black Temple, where the end boss is a major lore figure and major lore items play out in the dungeon).
