wowTwitter is a Twitter just for your characters
I'm not sure how well this will scale, but it's an interesting idea: while it's certainly possible to just create a Twitter account for your World of Warcraft characters (so anyone interested can always see what you're up to), the folks behind a new site called wowTwitter have gone a step further, and recreated Twitter's functionality specifically for Azeroth's virtual denizens. It's very barebones right now, but basically, after you register, you can punch in any of your characters, "verify" them by changing something about them in the Armory (like unequipping the piece of gear on your wrist), and then you can send and receive messages on that character, with special channels created for the guild, your realm, and so on. I thought it used Twitter somehow, but it seems completely separate: they're running their own database and servers, so while the two work the same way (there are "@" replies and hashtags), they don't interact at all.Which means they'll also have all of the problems that Twitter has had -- when only a few people are using your database, it runs fine, but if it starts to scale up at all, then you run into lots of "Fail Whale" downtime. And I'm not sure we need a whole other system just for WoW characters (though this one does have the nice bonus of "claiming" your character so it can't get impersonated). At any rate, they're in beta right now, and actually hosting a cash money prize contest for the most characters verified and tweets posted, so a link from us will probably show them how ready their system is. If it's your thing, go forth and wowTweet!

Why do I imagine a lot of replies to articles about twitter being read in a 'get off my lawn, you kids' kind of voice?

"then you can send and recieve messages on that character"
Say it with me " 'i' before 'e', except after 'c' ".

You all are missing one of the greatest features of Twitter. It's external functionality. Sure there are people out there that will check twitter to watch their friends actions, but then there's blogs out there that include their Twitter feed. WOW.com has it's own twitter feed. Think of it as a small RSS feed.
Most guilds have a forum don't you agree? What if you could see what your guild members were up to outside of the game? Or what their current goal is? That's what wowTwitter is for, and that's what it's gonna excel at.

This is actually a perfectly valid point, and not one that I'd thought of before. Thanks for suggesting this.

It's a nice site, but the concept is not that new. My site, CharPool — http://charpool.net/ —, does offer this functionality for quite some time now. Hell, mine even shows the tweets on a timeline with all your chars achievements and stuff. And has guild support. And a number of additional features.
Check out my main @ http://charpool.net/chars/3-nyshaa-theshatar-eu (click on timeline and scroll around to see what I mean).
On a related note: DEAR WOW.COM CREW, by now I am really disappointed that noone ever answers either my mails or my comments here. I've sent you the link to my site twice, because I assumed you'd be interested in another link for the Daily Grind or something, and since I got no replies or anything, even wrote some comments to related stories here, but by now feel thoroughly ignored. Which is not nice. Even a "we get it, go away" would do.
Just saying.

anyone reading these comments should check it out.

Wow really nice site design and some cool looking features. Suprised i hadn't heard of it before, it looks pretty unique.

What the hell, man? You're right. This deserves some publicity as a viable alternative. It's a nice, clean, functional setup you've got.

Looks like a great wow/facebook hybrid, which is awesome, but the allure of wowtwitter.com to me is its ability to keep things simple, yet allow for me, my characters, and my friend's characters to keep in touch in real time. And better yet, it will allow for me to keep my personal tweets separate from my WOW tweets. I, for one will definitely check out the site and tweet away :).

Thier site is slow but this could be useful. especially if they make gadgets and embedded objects for pages.
I signed up

The reason most people want nothing to do w/ Twitter (at least the people I've talked to) is because they want to know what Twitter is. Its hard to describe because it isn't any one thing. Its like looking at a piece of blank paper and asking "Ok, what is that for?"
Twitter is simply a microblogging service where you can post messages 140 characters at a time. Nothing more, nothing less. It gets a bad rap because it sometimes contains a bunch of inane noise ("eating breakfast", "pouring syrup", etc). But its more than that. And not everyone will get it or even find a use for it.
I use it for many reasons. An IM for broadcasting to a group of friends. A way of sharing web links to people. Believe it or not, I've posted questions about something and gotten responses from companies (Pulte Homes for one).
Why would twitter be good for WoW? Think of a forum, but in an IM scenario. Subscribe to chatter about your server (#stonemaul for instance). Maybe your guild (#MyGuildName). A lot of hosted build sites have that on their pages, but that requires me to go to the website many times a day.
