Arena Junkies has an
appropriately-themed contest going on over at their site where they asked their community of high-rated
Arena players to design their own Arena. The community was quick to whip out everything from pencils to 3D programs and came up with a pretty good selection of possible Arena maps. How good were the maps? Well, let's just say I'd take any of the submissions over the awful Ring of Valor Arena. Alright, so maybe that's not a good gauge... but it's worth going over the entries to see what creative ideas the Arena-enthusiastic community have come up with.
The top three winners will receive tickets to
BlizzCon while registered Arena Junkies users who vote for the winning maps have a chance to win a
Blizzard Authenticator. Pretty cool prizes for a pretty cool contest, so head over to their site and register if you haven't already. New Arena maps would be a welcome addition to the game and conceivably not too much work considering no new mechanics need to be in place unlike the
Battlegrounds, which have different objectives. In fact, new Battlegrounds maps using the same mechanics would be an interesting addition to break the tedium.

Thorim's room, Dalaran city foating rocks, Ruins of Zul'Tek, and Ahn'Kahet are the best ones, I think. Best concepts. Ahn'Kahet and the Ruins look like they would be a blast to play on, too.

And the WSG flag room, too.
I don't know which would play better over others, though.

The pic you used gave me hope that the contest would actually be fairly well done.
Sadly its a competition to see who can make the worst MS paint picture.

Indeed, as an Architect you know 1 well made drawing sells someting better than a 1000 words I don't feel like reading now anyway. People need to be able to see what you want and these dept-less paint things rarely show it enough.

the pirate ship.
zomg i want to pvp on the pirate ship!!
yokumgang Jun 13th 2009 3:48PM
Not only is the design of the pirate map awesome (ZOMG PIRATES), but as for its layout, it actually wouldn't suck to play on.

Dalaran floating rocks would be epic.
Sanguinefrozenboy Jun 13th 2009 3:46PM
Lol, this is why we leave map design to the professionals.
Though some of them look good on paper, some of them are just laughable.
Nick Jun 13th 2009 3:51PM
Because they did so good with The Ring Of Valor.
Clbull Jun 13th 2009 4:00PM
You could say the same about Dalaran Sewers as well as Ring of Valor
DrunkenPandaren Jun 13th 2009 4:17PM
Hey man at least they're trying, putting way more effort into it then you. Most professional map makers were making shitty maps like this in doom before they moved up.
klinest Jun 13th 2009 4:27PM
I almost wish the Pirate Ship design could become the layout for a simple battleground. Sink the other ship! The original design already looks like the inner layers of the ship would be available allowing for more movement than just the top of the decks.

Thanks for completely ignoring my 'some of them look good on paper' comment. It's kind of like if someone says something bad about anything, everyone instantly must say something bad.
Some of those maps are done in MS paint. That's great for a 1st draft, but I'd never submit anything 'that bad' to a contest or an architect. There is no defense against 'bad design' except 'he tried his best' which is great for children, but in something as serious as whether you lose half a million bucks due to a single bad design (IE, you design a building, it gets built, and then collapses.) you should know that you've done bad.
I'm entitled to my right of laughter when I see such pathetic excuses for maps and you're entitled to thinking I'm a jerk, but I only do so at the bad ones.

Ahh, too bad the contest's closed already. I just created an Arena map on Google Sketch-up, and would've been glad to share it.
My favorite from the contest is also the one pictured in this article, simply because most others, while they may be based on good ideas, are poorly shown. Also, RNG parts = suck.

Needs to be floating rock from Nagrand so all the sissies that run away will fall off and die.
