World of Warcraft comic issue #20 preview
The World of Warcraft comic train keeps a-rollin' with the upcoming twentieth issue, with this one focusing on everyone's favorite pre-Wrath Scourge invasion. Here's what the official PR solicitation has to say:
The Scourge makes their move and attacks from all fronts intent on taking no prisoners! No longer united, can Varian and Thrall survive the onslaught? And will Valeera once again succumb to her addiction to magical energy?
Oh no, dear readers! Can they? Will she?
I guess you'll just have to pick up the comic. If you need a quick fix, though, you can check out BlizzPlanet's scans of the preview that they've so graciously provided. At a glance, the art seems to be a bit improved over the Onyxia arc (thankfully) and, possibly more importantly, we're finally getting into recent and familiar territory. Heck, the comic's only a few months behind us now! Maybe soon you'll read about yourself killing Yogg-Saron before you even do it.

I got pretty bored of this series about six or seven months ago, when the whole Onyxia business was coming to a close. The series started off okay, but I really got bored of it. I'm not sure if it's Simonson's relatively stilted writing (He hasn't really changed with the times since he was big in the eighties) or that the series as a whole is pretty boring to a fan of the Horde. I think this book would work better as a kind of Anthology series rather than holding down one primary cast.

I am enjoying it but I think it needs more love for the horde. We have an undead mage showing up which is good and gives us a nice doorway to more horde characters. I would love a Blood Elf Warlock and Tauren Druid to be main and on going characters as well. In any case the comic is way too one sided.

I would love to not see another blood elf in it. They already have one. How about you just login to wow and look around to see blood elves?

Blood Elf Warlock: Read Night of the Dragon.
Also: Blood Elf Warlocks are the most cliched and ANNOYING class/race combos in WoW currently IMO.
Tauren Druids are pretty close too.
I'd like to see another Putress-esque villain come about, how about they add Putress! He isn't dead yet at this point in the comics story

lol yikes all the blood elf hate.
They were merely suggestions. We have an undead mage main character(hopefully), and Valeera, while a blood elf, is hardly a good representation of her people. My thoughts were having a blood elf warlock could give us a nice look into their addiction. All of this without painting them as villains though.
Tauren Druids... well they are the only horde class that are druids, so hands are tied there, and since we have a night elf druid in the comic it would be very easy to implement since druids work together.
The point is more horde representation in the comics (logging into the game doesn't really help there) would be nice. Putress would be a great addition, but again he would just be painting Horde as the bad guys.

How about a freaking "good guy" Orc? Even Thrall doesn't look so great in the comic (what with his tiny head and all) we need an Orc who isn't enslaving, insulting, or trying to assassinate the main character.

There's already been a huge Horde overrepresentation in lore. 2 campaigns in WC3, 2 novels, an unfinished game, and chunks of in-game stuff has been devoted entirely to Thrall. There's enough "omg Horde is so awesome lololol" stuff in lore already. It's time for the Alliance to get some badass lore of it's own, and Varian is a great start.
Although it seems like they may be starting to cave in to Horde fanboys, unfortunately, since they're probably gonna have Thrall the Mary Sue take out that necropolis all by himself with his awesome shaman powers of awesome. /sigh.

I lol @ players who hate on Blood Elves.
These are the people who play Gnomes or played Night Elves in Vanilla WoW who are trying to shift the focus away from their crappy races.
Zelius Jun 15th 2009 10:59AM
I play Horde and even I don't like blood elves... Except for the female ones... I have a thing for skinny blondes.

nice can't wait

That.....is quite possibly the stupidest teaser paragraph I've ever read.
Of course, I missed out on the ones from the rest of the series.

Just read through the preview scans. The artwork is pretty awesome, but the writing is...um...well, you know the old adage of "if you can't say something nice..." ? Yeah.
Cyanea Jun 15th 2009 1:48AM
Ugh. I'd really not be reminded of that event.

Can anyone actually recommend if these are worth reading? Or are they just a hastily cobbled together cash in?
Kadamon Jun 15th 2009 7:45AM
I can recommend the first...8 comics.
After that it started to go downhill for the Ony thing...and the novelty kind of wore off.

The wording up top says Thrall and Varian divided, does this mean the comic is doing the Wrathgate chain? Because Varian was cool with Thrall(or at least not all out war with him) until Wrathgate.
Zal Jun 15th 2009 10:06AM
They're not up to Wrathgate yet but I imagine they will do it eventually, probably just replace the players with Broll and co like they did for Onyxia. I'm not sure how they'll handle Horde side thinking about it.
Which I feel a bit iffy about, it was cool to think that your characters were fighting alongside the main lore characters but the comic pretty much says that the only people who fought Onyxia were the King and his pals. Which is more realistic by far I know but still... kinda ruins some of the fun I think.
At the moment I think they're around the time Scourge attacked SW and Org so it's about right before WotLK.
