The Art of War(craft): Examing the Isle of Conquest, con't.
Clearly, teams will have difficulty controlling all points of interest at once. This isn't like Arathi Basin where grabbing all five resources lead to a swift victory. Which objectives to pursue are critical strategic decisions. Aside from the Oil Derrick and Cobalt Mines, which are near the bases from where teams enter the battle, other objectives will be hotly contested. What makes it even more interesting is that the objectives aren't strictly symmetrical. The Hangar grants access to an airship, but it's on a rail. The Dock grants access to Glaive Throwers which can toss players, but they'll be vulnerable to ground assaults. We can only assume that the Siege Workshop grants access to vehicles we're already familiar with, such as Catapults, Demolishers, and Siege Tanks. It's war. I mean, it's an industrial battleground with factories and hangars, tanks and airships, keeps with manned turrets... it's exciting and looks like it'll be insanely fun.
Factions
This new Battleground looks like a good opportunity for Blizzard to reintroduce a concept that I really enjoyed but they had deemed worthless somewhere along the way: Battleground factions. As fun as Eye of the Storm or Strand of the Ancients are, there's something cool about fighting for the Warsong or Frostwolf Clans or the Defilers (or, if you're Alliance, the Silverwing Sentinels, the Stormpike Guard, and the League of Arathos). Faction reputation is still very much a part of PvE, so why can't it be part of PvP just like the old days? It might have been too tedious for Blizzard to create different versions of gear per level, but this is a great opportunity for Blizzard to extend the story of the World of Warcraft.
The best indicator that there might be factions involved is that each side will have its Generals, an end boss that will take an entire raid or so to bring down. Hopefully these bosses will be as fun as Drek'thar or Vanndar Stormpike, maybe even more so. While Blizzard hasn't mentioned NPCs, it wouldn't be unlikely to have guards around the keep similar to those in Wintergrasp.
Ramifications
What will a new Battleground do to the current PvP environment? For the first weeks or so, expect a drop in participation for other Battlegrounds as players try out the Isle of Conquest. One thing that could happen is that players might abandon Alterac Valley en masse as their desire for large scale combat is fulfilled by the new Battleground and Wintergrasp. For one thing, I know a lot of players who play Alterac Valley purely for the quick Honor gain and because it's needed for completing Concerted Efforts or For Great Honor. Speaking of those quests, will they be revised to reflect the additional Marks of Honor from the Isle of Conquest? If so, that means they'll be more tedious to complete, although they'll help ensure participation in other Battlegrounds.
What about Achievements? Certainly, the Isle of Conquest will come with its own Master of the Isle of Conquest meta-Achievement similar to other Battleground masteries. Fortunately for those pursuing the Battlemaster meta-Achievement, it probably won't be retroactively made a requirement. It'll likely be a stand-alone meta similar to the Master of Wintergrasp. It'll be something to keep PvP enthusiasts and Achievement junkies occupied for some time.
Expect a few cosmetic changes all around Azeroth as Battlemasters for the Isle of Conquest will pop up all over major cities and some new Battleground portals will appear in Dalaran and Wintergrasp Keep. There'll also be a new Battleground Holiday to mix things up. As a Battleground addict, news of the Isle of Conquest is one of the most exciting things I've heard about the game in a long while. As fun as Wintergrasp is, the new weekly quest system has neutered participation greatly. This new epic Battleground should be a whole lot of fun. See you all on the PTR.

It'll be interesting to see how the Isle does in terms of imbalance - will there be a Tenacity buff, or will the faction with less just have to suck it up like in AV? I hope that Blizzard has learned by now that some servers just don't have exactly 40 (or in this case, 80) people queued up at any given time.
Anyway, I'm really excited for IoC and the vehicles therein. Hope "Soon(tm)" comes quickly!
jurandr Jun 16th 2009 3:22PM
I think their goal is that it will be so awesome, not having enough people in queue will not be a problem.
For most of WOTLK BG's have kinda been on the back burner, not many people I know pay much attention to them. In BC they were half the game, but now not so much. People have enough to do with puggable raids, wintergrasp, and achievements that they don't need to resort to battlegrounds.
But if the Isle of Conquest delivers what we hope it does, there won't be a problem with queuing. If BG rewards are worth their while, and Blizzard finds a way to be rid of afk'ers, then there won't be a problem with queuing. BG's (or at least, a bg) will be fun and interesting to be in again.
awwjwah Jun 16th 2009 4:27PM
Why wouldn't this BG be a part of battlegroups instead of single server to make sure you get 40 participants to each side?
Task Jun 16th 2009 3:20PM
Yes the key word here is "soon". And I agree, IoC looks like it will be the mix that PvP'ers will enjoy. I used to play PVP bg's but I got tired of it and continued leveling up to 70 then 80 when Wrath launched.
I'm concerned that people will just skip to this and WG and abandon WsG, AV, and AB altogether much like how most of the old content is dead and players just go there to level and complete old achievements.
RetadinMan Jun 16th 2009 3:26PM
What level is this going to be? If it is less than sixty, I see no problem with having it made a part of Concerted Efforts. If it is at 80, then they can't have it in that quest, considering you can first get it at 61.
Superthrust Jun 16th 2009 3:35PM
look at that map...alliance are the allied forces and horde are the MiddleEast....wtf...
Horde has OIL...and allys have Mines...and airships...we have fricken docks...w....t...f....
anyone else think this might fail? Now, before you downvote my post, i dont mean "aw this will be stupid" i mean...lag wise...look how many issues they had with wintergrasp IN it...sure, being instanced, it shouldn't (hopefully) affect the real game...but, as it might lag IN the instance itself...hrmm...
eitherway,

Some people will bitch about the dumbest things. You're even worse than them.
Cyanea Jun 16th 2009 3:49PM
As long as Blizz keeps it so that it's worthwhile to have the capture points rather than "lololo zerg rush to boss" like AV is now, I'll be INCREDIBLY happy.
Like...make it so that the enemy general isn't vulnerable until you get enemy reinforcements down to a certain point.
vazhkatsi Jun 16th 2009 3:54PM
the enemy keep has walls around it. you can't just zerg it, because when you get there you'll have a giant wall in the way. so you have to cap at least one way in.
Blacknimbus Jun 16th 2009 4:48PM
Exactly. I regret missing out on AV when it was first released. What it is now is a joke of an honor farm and nothing else. It's a PVE race with occasional PvP.
Here's hoping they get this one right.
Kyir Jun 16th 2009 3:50PM
Going to be terrible.
Reinforcements ruined AV, I see no reason why this should be any better.
vazhkatsi Jun 16th 2009 3:53PM
RE glaive throwers: in warcraft 3 didn't the glaives sort of ricochet? like the sentinel's weapons, they would hit the first target, then bounce to a 2nd or third, making glaive throwers Uber vs clusters of enemy siege engines
jmissing Jun 16th 2009 5:13PM
no, you are thinking of the huntress' attacks. The glaives could be upgraded to go THROUGH enemies, but not bouncing like a mutalisk, eg.
GrrFace Jun 16th 2009 4:12PM
Your use of caps, bad grammar, and poor spelling show your idiocy.
Genxtrem Jun 16th 2009 4:15PM
Can anyone say Gnomish assault taem from the sky. With a dwarven demolition team at the walls. :)
Netherscourge Jun 16th 2009 4:16PM
This is the first time I've been excited about WoW in a LONG time.
I think Ulduar sucks and I definitely miss proper large-scale PvP .
I just hope it doesn't suck and there's realyl awesome rewards available for it.
Bob Dewane Jun 16th 2009 4:25PM
I pretty much hate PvP (Idid it to grind gear in BC and I do WG now to try and get/keep control of the VoA). THIS, however, sounds pretty dang cool. It seems like an almost entirely new way to play the game. Maybe it won't seem like that when it goes live, but in my mind's eye I'm thinking "Blizz got their chocolate in my peanut butter..." I REALLY hope it's as awesome as it sounds.
Bob Dewane Jun 16th 2009 4:38PM
Not to mention you try to do something as stupid as to compare a BATTLE GROUND MAP IN A FREAKING GAME to real life political affiars. I just looked it up in the Dictionary of the On-Line Troll and, low and behold, it is the definition of "stupid."
Zebulin Jun 16th 2009 5:02PM
I, for one, miss Alterac Valley "1.0" with the Bloodrager and all the extra NPCs. The AV of today is but a faint ghost of one of the best features in WoW.
I'm hoping this new BG will capture some of that lost glory.
superawesomeperson Jun 16th 2009 5:06PM
The generals/commanders will be orc and human... also any npcs will... because they're the only ones ever represented, which is kinda annoying... but anyway, still sounds fun... lookign forward to air strikes in particular, or... killing people while they parachute and watchign them fall.
