Gear and content progress together by design. The typical toon will gear up some (heroics, crafted) for raiding the first tier of content, and once they have a decent set of gear and raid experience at that tier, they are ready to move to the next level. And so on.
To take the “madness” out, I raid to see content, not for gear (though I do maintain a gear list to know what to roll for). As a result of not being hung up on gear, I enjoy myself. As a result of seeing content (bosses knocked down), eventually I get gear. As a result of getting gear, I get to see the next tier of content.
I guess I’m lucky - right now I’m in a rather big guild, and there is not much pressure to raid every week. The roll / loot council has always been fair enough. We’re a team, and upgrades help the team as well as the toon (I can’t progress without them!). My guild is cool - raid hard, chill over the gear.
