Scattered Shots: Hunter macros even your mother could love
Welcome to Scattered Shots. I am Eddie "Brigwyn" Carrington from The Hunting Lodge and I'll be your tour guide each Thursday as we explore what makes our Hunters tick and how we can make them better.
Well, maybe not your mother. But you know us Hunters, we really love our macros. Unlike some other games out there, World of Warcraft gives players a pretty simple method to help customize their playing environment. We all know about the cool add-ons like Recount and RatingBuster. Now add to that the ability to arrange the look and feel of our User Interface and Blizzard really has done something special.
Instead of trying to tackle those, I thought we could talk about the one that gives many of us players some difficulty: macros. And you know what? They really don't have to be that complicated.
Before we get started, I would be remiss if I didn't at least explain little bit about macros. At least I need to define what macros are what they are not. Macros are a way to combine several commands (attacks, emotes, or other actions) and combine them into a single button press or click.
As with most things in life, there are some rules we have to make sure to follow. For example, your character can only have 54 separate macros (36 shared across your characters, and 18 assigned to a specific toon). Also, each macro can only contain 250 characters. (Now, if you use Twitter, you already know that's a little less than 2 tweets.) Don't let this limitation fool you though: macros are extremely versatile and offer a ton of flexibility.
If you are interested in more details about how to script or create macros, I'd say head over to WoW Wiki. Their macro resource goes into a lot more detail on the workings of macros and commands than I could attempt to do here. However, what I can do is give you a list of different macros and show you how they can be used for PvE as well as PvP. Let's take some macros and see what they do and how they can apply to each style of play.
(Note: you might need to alter some of these macros depending on spell availability.)
Save Fluffy (PvE or PvP)
Keeping one's pet alive is one of the biggest challenges to a Hunter. And for a Beast Mastery Hunter, losing your pet can mean a loss of up to 40% of your DPS. This macro will yell out asking for a healer in your raid to heal your pet. Then it will cast Mend Pet and start using bandages to offer a bit of help.
/Yell FLUFFY NEEDS HEALS!!/cast Mend Pet
/use [target=Pet] Dense Frostweave Bandages
Feed Fluffy (PvE or PvP)
Pet feeding used to be a chore. But with the automatic pet feeder it's not bad at all.
/cast Feed Pet /use Clefthoof RibsPet management simplified (PvE or PvP)
Now if you want, you can actually combine the two macros above into a single pet management one. What do I like about this? It's how you can replace several different buttons from your action bars with just this one macro. The only gotcha is that this macro uses the control, shift and alt keys as modifiers. So when you click it, remember to hold the appropriate key at the same time.
/cast [modifier:alt] Revive Pet/cast [modifier:shift] Mend Pet
/cast [modifier:ctrl] Call Pet
/cast Feed Pet
/use Clefthoof Ribs
Time for bed (PvE or PvP)
This is a great macro to use when you have party members being mind controlled during Yogg-Sarron. In PvP, well let's just say it can really frustrate some Warriors and other Hunters.
/cast [target=mouseover] Tranquilizing ShotSave me Seymour! (PvE or PvP)
When you're in battle and need your pet to pull your hide out of the fire, this one can do it.
/cast Master's Call
/cast Roar of Sacrifice
/cast Intervene
Incoming! (PvE or PvP)
Depending on which method you prefer, you can either use the one that requires you to use focus or if you prefer I have one that allows you to just mouseover the intended target.
/focusor
/cast [target=mouseover] MisdirectionGive me mana (PvE or PvP)
This is an aspect switching macro. Each time you press the button you can switch between DragonHawk and Aspect of the Viper. It's a great single button macro so you can easily switch between aspects.
/castsequence Aspect of the Dragonhawk, Aspect of the ViperGo get 'em (PvE or PvP)
This one assumes you are and your pet is attacking the same target. It will send in your pet, apply Hunter's Mark and then fire of a sting. If you are questing or in a raid, you're probably wanting to apply Serpent's Sting. And if you're in Arena you will probably want to try and sap your opponents' mana. Here's a PvE and and a PvP version of the same macro.
PvE Version:
/petattack [target=target]/cast Serpent Sting
PvP Verson:
/petattack [target=target]/cast Viper Sting
Shh... Be Quiet (PvE or PvP)
Silencing shot is still one of my favorite spells. There is nothing like seeing mage getting ready to send a giant fireball your way only to be left speechless. The enjoyment is even bigger when it's another player instead of an NPC mob.
/cast [target=mouseover] Silencing ShotFull Steam Ahead (PvE or PvP)
This is the old standard Beast Mastery I-Win button. By pressing a single button you will set off Bestial Wrath, Kill Command, Rabid Fire, and both of your trinkets.
/cast Bestial Wrath/cast Kill Command
/use 13
/use 14
/cast Rapid Fire
Hunter Melee (PvP) (edited: fixed)
I know what you're thinking and you're right, Hunters are not suppose to melee. But I don't know about you, but every time I duel or decide to go into a battleground, sure enough someone will sneak up on me and force me to fight my way out. Then I remember I have Disengage and can click it. So to save room on my action bar I created this Hunter Melee Macro.
/castrandom Wing Clip, Mongoose Bite/cast Raptor Strike
Nosebleed section (PvE or PvP)
Sometimes I just need to see more of the game than allowed by the default camera zoom. If you didn't realize it, you can actually make the camera zoom out further letting you see more of the terrain. This can be especially helpful in those raids where you need to see what's going on while still watching out for bubbly red stuff. An even better use of this is in PvP when sometimes it could literally mean the difference between a corpse run or extra honor.
/script SetCVar ("cameraDistancemax" ,50)That's about all I can think of for now. For more macros and how to use them, I suggest you check out WoW Wiki's Hunter macros. If your looking for macros to help your PvP game, check out the Arena Junkies Hunter macro site. There are just too many different ways to use macros to capture here. I've seen special shot macros and trap macros. I've even seen macros that can switch out your gear and ammo.
What about you guys? Do you have any favorite macros? Or have you been searching for a macro and just can't find the right one? Let me know and let's see if we can really get a comprehensive list of Hunter macros together.
(edited: Since ellekay asked so politely, I went ahead and removed the healing request line in the Save Fluffy Macro. I also made some corrections to the ones mentioned in the comments. Thanks for the feedback.)
So you want to be a Hunter, eh? Well then you came to the right place. Scattered Shots is the one column dedicated to helping you learn everything it takes to be a Hunter. wowinsider comment split up the last 2 lines from the macro, just add them to the bottom of the big macro you see
Sythe Jun 19th 2009 5:20AM
For misdirect I use something along the following lines (might not be spot on as I haven't changed it for a while and I'm at work).
#showtooltip Misdirect
/cast [modifier,target=pet,exists] [nomodifer,target=target,noharm,nodead] [nomodifier,target=focus,noharm,nodead] Misdirect
I'm sure you could probably get a mouseover target in there as well, probably after the modifer=pet as target but before the first nomodifer priority of current friendly target.
Another term might be [target=targettarget, harm, nodead] to allow automatic cast on your targets target for those occasions when you just can't help catching up to the tank's threat.

Anyone who yells for heals will promptly be ignored by this healer. Fail macro is fail.

You CLICK disengage?! FAIL

I don't remember all the macros I use since I haven't used my hunter all that much since TBC raids. To save my highest DPS ammo for instance runs and to save money when I can't get my friend to make it for me for free or food, I use the following macro for all stings and attacks that don't do damage to the target.
Example:
#showtooltip Concussive Shot
/equip Ironbite Shell
/cast Concussive Shot
/equip Mammoth Cutters
Very simple macro. It saved me a ton of cash when raiding in TBC. I see so many hunters wasting higher DPS ammo all the time and then they complain about having to pay giant bills to refill.

Another really useful work-around for Blizzard bugs that wasn't mention is the ability to activate or deactivate pet auto-cast abilities via macro.
/petautocastoff Growl
/petautocaston Bite
... etc
Put these in your Hunter's Mark/pet attack macro to make sure the pet does what its told, regardless of Blizzard's random bugs.
Endless Jun 19th 2009 9:04AM
/cast [nopet] Call Pet; [target=pet, dead] Revive Pet
/petattack
/cast [nocombat] Hunter's Mark
/petfollow [target=pettarget,exists]
I kept forgetting to put my mark up, so I made this, I call it a "lazy hunter key".
With first press, it'll mark your current target and sends the pet to battle.
On next press, it'll pull the pet back to you (useful for pulling distant enemies into your walking range, for more convenient looting), and with one more press, it'll send the pet into the fight again.
If your pet is absent or dead, the macro will call / revive it on the first press and sends it to battle on second press.
Sadly I couldn't find any way to check whether there is a mark already present on the current target; so I'm checking for in combat / out of combat instead.
Cotar Jun 19th 2009 9:29AM
I like this one.
/cast Wing Clip
/cast Disengage
Slow the target then pop away to resume kiting.

Here's my assist/misdirection macro. I haven't played my hunter since 3.1, so I'm not sure if the patch borked it or not.
#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [target=focus,exists,nodead] Misdirection; [target=pet,exists,nodead] Misdirection
/cast !Aspect of the Dragonhawk
/target focustarget
I either always have my pet set as my focus when soloing, or when grouped, the tank (if there's a fight with a main assist, or fight order other than what the tank is fighting, I don't use this). I hit this, it brings me out of Viper and into Dragonhawk, casts misdirect on the tank, and targets his target. If for some reason I don't have a focus, it misdirects to my pet. Really useful.

If you are in melee range in pvp or anything else, your main goal should be to get out of melee range. Here's what I'd say is better
/cast Wing Clip
/cast Disengage
/cast Concussive Shot
Something like that.
That being said, I think that macros using multiple shots like that are kinda cheap and ruin my gaming experience. If I could macro all my moves I might as well just get a 1-button keyboard and let my dog stand in for me.
This is my space-saving aspect macro of awesome tho:
This one is a fantastic Aspect macro which puts all your aspects onto one button (make the icon the question mark, the first choice, and it will show whichever you'll use). Post this one with no return/new lines, just paste as one line:
/use [mod:alt, mod:ctrl] Aspect of the Wild; [mod:ctrl, mod:shift] Aspect of the Cheetah; [mod:ctrl] Aspect of the Viper; [mod:shift] Aspect of the Pack; [mod:alt] Aspect of the Beast; [mod:alt, mod:ctrl] Aspect of the Wild; Aspect of the DragonHawk
translation:
hold nothing, click to get dragonhawk
ctrl- viper
shift- pack
alt- beast
alt+ctrl- wild
shift+ctrl- cheetah

I have a better mend/res/call pet macro as well as a better feed pet macro, imo.
As I'm not able to logon right now, one looks like this:
#showtooltip
/cast [modifier] Revive Pet; [target=pet, dead] Revive Pet; [nopet] Call Pet; Mend Pet
Calls pet if not present, Mends pet is present and life, revives if pet is dead. If the pet's body despawns you hit ctrl (or whatever) and it forces the res.
And I can't find the Feed Pet one online but it checks which pet i have out and feeds him/her from the correct stack of food. It helps that I basically have meat eaters and fruit eaters.

I love running with my cat but prowl and sometimes cower can but an annoyance. I made two macros to solve this. The first is for solo-questing, the second is for questing with a tank/group/instance:
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petautocaston Growl
/petautocastoff Cower
/petautocastoff Prowl
/petattack [target=target, exists, harm]
/cast Hunter's Mark
/petautocastoff Growl
/petautocaston Cower
/petautocaston Prowl
/petattack [target=target, exists, harm]
I did not put in whether the cat is on defensive or passive. I figure that decision is up to me...

As a hunter, I have never once asked for a raid healer to heal my pet. Yes, my dps drops if my pet dies but I'm not willing to risk a possible ripe of the ENTIRE group when the healer isn't focusing on the tank(s). I think to play the hunter class well, a player needs to be able to multi-task with dpsing and with controlling/monitoring the pet during each fight.
Please edit this post and take out that macro!
It's making us hunters look bad... We're not all huntards! =)
Irmie Jun 19th 2009 7:49PM
Go get 'em: you forgot to add the hunter's mark into the macro ;)
Great macros - thanks for the article!
LostOne Jun 19th 2009 9:29PM
The zoom out macro doesn't work for me. Do I need to enable some option in the UI before it will?
netheray Jun 19th 2009 10:10PM
My favorite configuration for the melee swings is this:
#showtooltip
/castsequence Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite
Because the two have similar cooldowns, using them one after the other if you're meleeing (for example, building weapon skill) seems logical, then by the time one in the sequence is cooled down, the other will be nearly ready too. I keep Wing Clip separate because I always want that available if something gets too close unexpectedly.
iza Jun 25th 2009 10:56AM
I understand the hatred of someone yelling for healing, but it's not that terrible of a thing in emergencies. After all, that misdirect fired off on something attacking said healer would be VERY important, and if the pets dead, well so then would be the healer in this instance. Or should the healer just heal himself and deal with it since it is his job? And yes I play priest as an alt. Don't get me wrong, it is in no way justified to see this kind of macro used but once in a blue moon so to speak, but sometimes the Healer puts ALL their attention on just the MT.
meowcat Aug 11th 2009 9:26AM
i would think you would want to do /stopcasting before silencing shot or tranq shot in case you're in the middle of a long steady shot or revive pet or whatever
/stopcasting
/cast silencing shot
/stopcasting
/cast tranquilizing shot
also
i would disable call of the wild for boss fights, and manually run it using "cast call of the wild" in any decent "IWIN" macro... just increases dps that much more when you need it.
Oh, and get a Logitech G11 or G15 keyboard for insane hotkey awesomeness!!!
