Groupcrafting: The art of getting a group together
Tales of the Aggronaut sent us this multipart guide he wrote on one of the things we all do in the game that might nevertheless be tough for a lot of people: actually getting a group together. It sounds like a simple thing (just ask people whether they want to group up or not), but as you probably know from experience, sometimes it can be pretty tough. So TotA set out, instead, to do a from-the-ground-up guide, from how to find and network with people in the game to how to build a group piece-by-piece.And I like it a lot -- he starts with a preamble with some general networking tips, including finding social channels to join (many guilds and realms have a few social channels constantly filled with folks LFG or interested in playing socially) and putting together a solid friends list, then goes on to explain how to communicate (probably a great read for anyone in any part of the game) and then how to actually build a WoW group, from core classes to splitting up class roles. Very impressive -- while most veteran players have probably heard or done this stuff before, it's nice to see a clear, concise guide that starts at the beginning.
And it's even nicer to see a guide that emphasizes the social aspect of gameplay. Even here at WoW.com, we're all about gameplay tips, from profession insights to class balance discussion, but sometimes we overlook that to play a social game like World of Warcraft, you sometimes need to focus on social skills. As much as theorycrafting and gear upgrading can help, sometimes it's better to learn how to be friendly and social instead.

The advice the blogger gives is very solid, and definitely aligns with my experience setting up Pugs.
I especially like the emphasis he places on what I think is the most important aspect, setting up the group core (tank/healer) before going after DPS. One of my biggest peeves is seeing a "LF2M tank and healer" (Its even worse when the group consists of a druid, a paladin, and a death knight).

Because if you play a hybrid you have to tank or heal right?

@jyorore:
Well, yes, at some point they do.

Pretty good articles; sums it up for someone who haven't got experience with PuGs.
When seeing the trade of my servers, I seriously doubt that there can be civilized social channels, but you never know. I might have to go see if I can dig some up
Also: I want that picture on a t-shirt

That picture is of characters from 8-Bit Theatre (Fighter, White Mage, Monk, Black Mage, and Thief -- themselves based on Final Fantasy Sprites), and it is pure win. ^_^

I would also like that on a tshirt. It is so cute that I almost screamed like a school-girl. Okay I did scream like a schoolgirl.

They're not BASED on Final Fantasy sprites, they ARE the Final Fantasy sprites. Get some history.

Thanks for the kind words. Was my attempt to fill the gap that so many users have between passively hoping a group happens and actively finding one.

The Black Mage is all you really need in that group since he can use Hadouken. Too bad it's on a one day cooldown (isn't that how his hadouken is? xD).

Truer words were never spoken then the fact that a group of 3 dps lf a tank and healer is not even a good start to building a group.
You have no group.
I'm a tank on my main and my only serious alt atm is specced dps/healing. I don't even bother looking for dps until I have a tank and healer setup. I do relish the chance to dps as balance on my druid since I outclass any other dps ive met at my level but if it means sitting in a group with just a tank I will gladly hit my dual spec button to get the group moving.

This is a bit off topic, but I love the Final Fantasy 1 pic used with the article. Brings back ooooooold memories.

Final Fantasy 1 hardmode: full white mage party.
bonus loot: sense of satisfaction.
ahh back when people gave themselves increased difficulty with no reward incentive.

Slightly off topic, but one way to help with networking is to NOT get on people's "bad lists" or ignore lists.
When I have the patience, I'll tell annoying low level players begging or making a complete nuisance of themselves, that it's not a good idea since they could get on people's ignore lists. They usually respond "So?" But they could be shutting out potential group mates later on (not to mention business opportunities in trade). Maybe not a huge amount, but still, why do it?
Also, behaving badly in an instance could get you on people's "bad lists." While people may not put you on ignore, you may end up in a notebook page titled "People not to group with."
And being annoying in trade on a regular basis can get you noticed - in a bad way. Who wants to group with people who constantly has to show they they are the "only" people who seem to know what they are doing, even if their gear is fantastic? And showing your mean streak or neediness over and over again in public can get you a reputation. And by the way, being kicked out of a guild more times than anyone else, or being refused over and over again when trying to get into a guild, despite the fact that you know how to play, is not a good thing, and probably not something you want to advertise.

Just me (Night Elf Hunter) & my spider.. help out a few people if I can.. although my spider can be way too effective (so I don't attack unless a need to). fairly new on WoW.. gotton pwnd by a band of undead & blood elves.. thought I couldn't be attacked on an RP realm, although I did 'have a go' maybe I'm pvp now.. :S

I find a lot of people just bang their macros into trade and lfg and sit around waiting for an invite.. I used to do it too. Sometimes I open the LFG pane and see a full group- 3dps, tank, heal all in lfg for the same instance, but they don't bother grouping up.
Take the initiative and /w them if they want to come. Just sitting there does not kill bosses (insert joke about how someday it might). Send a whisper and an invite. If they bothered to get into lfg, chances are they want to go.
In addition: Most 80s in LFG these days are willing to run ANY heroic instance. They get reputation regardless of which instance, have a chance at frozen orbs regardless which instance, and get badges regardlesss of which instance they're running.

OMG Final Fantasy 1 on the NES. Ruined freshman year of college and ran up a huge rental bill when i found it on the shelf at the local video store and had no idea what i was getting my self into.
