Addon Spotlight: XLoot and friends
Addon Spotlight takes a look at the little bits of Lua and XML that make our interfaces special. From bar mods to unit frames and beyond, if it goes in your Addons folder, we'll cover it here.
Today I'm going to focus on an addon that is almost purely cosmetic. XLoot is one of those addons that people will see on screenshots and ask "ooh, what is that?" Essentially, it makes your loot frames much prettier, and somewhat more informative. You can see the default configuration in the screenshot.
It's extremely configurable, though; anything from background and border colors to whether the loot frame snaps to your cursor can be set with a simple "/xloot options." Personally, I like my XLoot to not snap to my cursor, since I use auto-loot and the movement is distracting. I also like to lighten it up a bit; glossy black isn't a great fit for my UI. But everyone should be able to find a look that fits.
I also like the option to color the loot frame based on loot quality; it's nice to see a blue frame when out questing. Finally, the "link all" button is quite handy for a raid leader, and there's a thoughtful option to only show that button when you're in a party/raid.

XLoot has a few plugins to extend its functionality, as well. XLootMaster is meant to give you more control, information, and options as a master looter.
I haven't tried it personally yet because there were some rumors that it wasn't working, and that's the last thing you want as a master looter in a raid. However, a new update just got pushed two days ago, and everything I've heard says it works great now, so I'll be giving it a try in my next raid.

There are two more plugins for XLoot that I have heard mixed reports on: XLootGroup and XLootMonitor. XLootGroup is meant to give you more attractive frames for rolling on items, and XLootMonitor is meant to keep track of who gets what loot as your instance progresses. However, I'm not sure they're working right now. Is anyone using them and able to confirm/deny?
In the mean time, Tekkub has written his own take on XLootGroup called teksLoot, and that is supposed to be working, so you could try that out.

I use them heavily, and they all work fine with the current patch.

Oh, and a recent pic, showing what they look like in practice (I use the Onslaught UI avaliable on WoWinterface)

How memory demanding is that UI. Looks very very nice.

It appears to be SpartanUI. not too intensive.

XLootGroup works for me. I really like it cause it takes up a whole lot less space and it is easier for me to tell the difference between need and greed.

That's what I love about XLootGroup too. It makes looting during combat much less annoying, because the little loot 'bars' don't block the screen the way the standard big loot windows do.

Dominos also gives you a movable loot window -- not as polished as this one -- and you can change the size.

I use all of them and have for years. Never encountered any issues with them and they are some of my favorite addons. :)

I'd go crazy without XLoot. In fact, there's not a single thing left in my interface that's Blizz default. Maybe I have control issues...

I had this awhile ago, and after deleting my addon folder (can't remember why), I couldn't remember what this was called. Thanks for reminding me. :)

Thank you so much for posting this addon! I was looking through wow screenshots and I happened upon a screenshot of KJ loot back from BC days and they were using that. I spent a good 2 or 3 hours looking for this addon just yesterday, and was not able to find it!
TYVM!

oh, and btw, Tekkub is a she, not a he :)

...or is (s)he?

oh snap! ;)
either way, i love your addons immensely. You are a true asset to the addon community and to many people's WoW experience!
Tekkub Jun 20th 2009 11:32PM
Oh you mentioned me! You might want to mention Butsu as well... Butsu + teksLoot are a much smaller alternative to XLoot and it's plugins if all you want is prettier/smaller loot frames.

They all work, I've been using them for awhile. Once I found Xloot in a screenshot a while ago, like a couple of other posters, I haven't been able to live without it. During the few times that I actually have MasterLooter status, the XLootMasterLoot is a lifesaver. Much easier to remember/know someone's class, than what group they're in.

Decided to get this and try it out, but I have a question.
Is there an easier way to configure this addon than by typing everything out in the chat box? It just seems like a bit of a pain, isn't there some sort of configuration menu without having to do it all manually?

Cool and attractive addon I've used for ages. So long I've forgotten what default loot frames look like, heh. The colouring is especially handy - oooh! I got a blue! :-)

The UI is called Onslaught UI (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info9960-OnslaughtUI.html) and It uses up about 52megs on average.
