Henry Cavill plays WoW -- Ryan Reynolds doesn't
I was reading my print copy of Entertainment Weekly today, which features their Summer Must List. They listed their Must Dashing Duke as Henry Cavill from The Tudors. Cavill says that World of Warcraft is on his Must List: "It's fairly addictive." In an interview with JustJared.com earlier this year, Cavill said that he also plays Eve Online. As a geekgirl, I say yay to more gamer hunks. In the same issue of EW, their cover boy, Ryan Reynolds discussed his Must List. It included Intervention and Jon & Kate Plus Eight. When asked about his Must Videogame, he said "I don't really play videogames. Is there a way to waste more f-ing time?"
I'll field that question, Ryan. Yes, yes there is. Those reality shows that you have spent so much time watching? Yeah, excellent candidates for bigger wastes of time. I watch reality TV, too, but I think that interactive gaming is a much better expenditure of my leisure time. Of course, I'm a bit biased, but I think that if people compared their hours spent watching TV to the hours that gamers spend playing, the numbers would be similar.
Now I have to decide: desecrate some flames? Or watch The Deadliest Catch? Regardless of my decision, it won't be watching Van Wilder, but that has nothing to do with Mr. Reynolds' view of gaming.

Curious to know what term would describe him had he said something mean in response, rather than something that respectfully dodged the comment.

And reply fails again. That was @Toasty's comment about the douchebaggery of ol' double-R.

Usually when you tell an actor that their upcoming movie has not met expectations, they're willing to talk about - often they're interested in hearing the criticism of critics.
Reynolds acted like a child.

I got rid of TV a couple years ago, so really WoW is my at-home by myself timesink. The rest of the time, I'm either outdoors (nice this time of year, sucks in the winter) or doing stuff with friends (boardgames, cards, movie theater, drinks, whatever). I don't know, I feel like my productive time is productive, my downtime is relaxing...what I'm doing works for me.

If we are rank ordering diversions/time waisters
Reality TV < Staring Blankly at a white wall < underwater basket weaving < TV < Computer Games < Social Computer Games.
Somewhere in that chain belongs 'having a life'. But since I don't have one, your mileage may very.

"Is there a way to waste more f-ing time?"
Yeah, there is. Like watching Jon and Kate and Intervention. X-Men Origins is pretty high up there on that list, too.
I've never even heard of Henry Cavill.

While it may not matter what celebrities say, people who are fans may still get a bit of their words into the brain. Even in this day, when videogame sales are huge, when a game like WoW can boast over 11 million subscribers worldwide, there is still a negative perception of games.
"It's DANGEROUS!! Having one in the house will make you KILL real!!" And it's still sadly used by defense lawyers to try to deflect blame off of their clients and onto games.
"It's for kids. You're in your 20s (or 30s or 40s). Why do you still play with kid's games?"
"You must not be able to relate to people." (Though on some days, reading trade chat might validate this point."
and
"It's worthless. A real waste of time."
People like the guys at Penny Arcade have tried hard to change the perception. (It was, at least in part, as a their reaction to Jack Thompson, which helped them formulate the idea for Child's Play).
So, to those of us who play, it's easy to say 'Meh, so what?" Most of us know better, and we enjoy what we enjoy. We see some beautiful art, hear music worthy of any great movie, delve into complex storylines, hear some great dialog (ever play Psychonauts?) And those of us here have made some great friends through games. And most of all, we find it an enjoyable way to relax, to challenge ourselves, or just a nice way to fill our free time. But in a way, saying "it's a waste of time" almost translates to "people who play are losers" (or at least, they are prone to wasting time).

I think he means "The Condemned," a 2007 movie starring Stone Cold Steve Austin.
No, I didn't see it.
