Ghostcrawler on why Bluetrackers suck
Ghostcrawler has finally said on the forums what I've been saying for a while here on WoW.com and elsewhere: using blue text on the forums as a way of disseminating information is "a strange way to communicate." He's been appending the words "[Not tracked]" to some of his posts so they don't end up on the official "bluetracker," because a lot of what he posts is just silly and fun and not to be pored over and examined (especially without the context of the other posts around it). But all of those posts are still picked up by the unofficial bluetrackers that many players follow, and he laments that it's annoying to have people jump in on threads without reading all the context: "you end up looking like a real jerk half the time."I would never call GC a jerk, but it's clear to see what he means -- sending out information via official posts on the forum is something Blizzard has done for a long time, and it's really a bad way to go about it. To their credit, they've been trying lots of new things lately, from official interviews to class Q&As and just plain releasing official information on the site. But I've always thought (and still think) that the company could use an official blog -- back when I was playing Dark Age of Camelot, I really enjoyed all of their work on the Camelot Herald, and I think Blizzard would benefit from something more like that. They do have a section for official news on the front page, but that's mostly licensed items and marketing information, not actual updates to the game.
In the meantime, we'll keep getting hints and scraps from the forum. It's probably a bit much for GC to ask that some of his posts not be talked about at all -- if he was on Twitter, every tweet would be pored over, too ("GC had pancakes for breakfast, nerf pancakes!"). But I do think that if there was more information coming from official channels about class balance and changes, the forum posts wouldn't be such a big deal.
Update: The folks over at Wowraid tell us their bluetracker doesn't track posts with "[Not tracked]" added to them. But doesn't it show just how silly the whole forums thing is that we have to have webpages that track forum posts by the blues, and then they have to have flags in those posts that keep us from tracking them?

I'm still waiting for my pony.
Nerf ponies!

Reroll Squire, they're gonna get a pony: http://db.mmo-champion.com/s/67056/apply-argent-pony/

Beware of any promises from Ghost crawler. He did not say when or how we were going to get our new pony, but I have a suspicion that he will give it to all new level 20's after 3.2 drops.
DigitalMonitor Jun 25th 2009 12:07PM
I heard in the next patch, that ponies will be able to stack.

Until they come up with a way to filter out all the inane crap that gets into the typical general forums post and drill down to the meat (ie: the blue post and the practical discussion portion) then you're going to have a half-assed system where we get what we get.
The discussions are rarely two-sided, so I don't see why Ghostcrawler doesn't just pick a few threads every day and makes official one-way blog posts about them to explain things rather than force people to either dig through a 50 page thread to find the 4 worthwhile posts. It'd be far more productive and it'd eliminate the context issues since a blog post would force him to generate context and eliminate any lack of clarity on the concept.
Until then, we're going to read MMO champion and their blue post summaries and infer what we can since most people can't be bothered to read the huge cluttered crapfest of threads that tend to actually produce the useful blue responses in the end.

I agree although it's a shame we have to resort to that.

Not so much be bothered, be frustrated to read through tons of irrevelant posts, people complaining/trolling... and general stupidity that encompasses most of those trends. It's like a low-grade public high school lunchroom during a basic convention.
csulok Jun 24th 2009 8:16PM
The Wowraid bluetracker doesn't show those posts.

If they nerf pancakes, maple syrup should receive strong buff or this comp will become nonexistent in breakfast brackets.
Mike Schramm Jun 24th 2009 8:26PM
Are you kidding? Pancakes with talent points in blueberries or strawberries are crazy overpowered already, with or without the maple syrup buff. And don't even get me started on the chocolate chips getting mixed in the next patch. If anything, it's cereal that needs a buff -- ever since they nerfed sugar, it just hasn't been the same.
Retropally Jun 24th 2009 8:29PM
Sorry mike, but I have a good memory and I believe you said in a previous podcast that your trying to eat healthy this year :P
Noctiluca Jun 25th 2009 12:08AM
I lol'd.
Glaras Jun 25th 2009 11:43AM
If the pancakes are specced 3/3 in Whole Wheat, they should be OK, especially if he's got an herbalist in the raid to make sure he's getting the Fresh Fruit buff.

Thank you, that post made me laugh. Just made my morning!

I'm not sure if some blue trackers edit posts, but the mmo-champions blue tracker posts the complete text of a mod. If GC is having issues with being taken out of context maybe he should work at being more clear in his replys to other users posts and use the quote ability. As for general silly posts by blues, while they maybe worth a laugh every once in awhile, nobody reads wow forums for the mods wit, we read them for information.
Blue trackers provide a very valuable service.
Dave Jun 24th 2009 9:24PM
I think the out of context part is basically that the blue tracker only reports the actual blue text, and not the comment or comments that actually warranted a CM's response in the first place. You don't necessarily know WHY they said something, only that it was said and someone official said it. Unless it was quoted directly by whoever is being tracked in the blue tracker, it's not going to have the relevant context.
Now, some of this could be fixed by Ghostcrawler and all properly quoting all the context that's being replied to perhaps, but then you get people complaining about walls of text and they don't even bother reading the whole blue post before coming to a snap judgement, etc etc.
But really, there's a better way to do it and they're just not doing it.

"maybe he should work at being more clear in his replys"
That boy can dance a jig around issues. Have you ever seen the walls of BS he puts out to defend Death Knights. This guy is a true politician and I don't believe a thing he says - ever.
Magresda Jun 24th 2009 8:25PM
A developer blog would awesome, as long as it stays exactly that - a DEV blog, where the *developers* can talk to players about the game - not the marketing (which I'm fairly sure runs the official "news" spot).
Oh, and I would totally follow GC's twitter.
Sean Jun 25th 2009 12:08AM
Agree wholeheartedly. It really shocks me that Blizzard hasn't implemented something like this for all of their games when some many of their competitors have embraced blogging/social networking/etc in order to interface with fans. You want an example of how Blizzard could inform the community in a constructive manner? Check out EVE Online's developer diaries. EVE's community is arguably as passionate (and often as senselessly irate) as WoW's but the discussions at least have a focal point around regular developer entries that one doesn't have to wade through hundreds of threads of crap to read.
Flyhard Jun 25th 2009 2:58AM
I really, really miss reading my DevBlog (Well, I occasionally still do) after leaving EVE. I'd love to have a DevBlog from Blizzard.
They could just pick up on hot topics in the forum - but that would finally put an end to the post that say "Hey GC, look at me"...
