Returning to Azeroth the long way around
Ethic at Kill Ten Rats has a post up about something that a lot of you have probably been through: more and more I'm hearing about people returning to the game. I've been playing ever since I signed up a few years ago, but that's really only because I'm writing about it -- I'm pretty ADD when it comes to games, so left on my own, I probably would have walked away from WoW a long time ago. But Blizzard is really good at bringing players back by tweaking the game in exactly the way they woud like. I feel like if I had left, I would have definitely come back in for a while, if not with Burning Crusade than definitely with Wrath. Of course, Ethic's issues aren't really with deciding to return or not: he's having more issues actually trying to get his old accounts back. There's a laundry list of rules and limits to contend with, between dealing with having or not having the expansions, the limits on the Scroll of Resurrection program and the trial accounts, and dodging all of Blizzard's various limits on how to start and use new accounts to the game. Man -- if I had left and was planning on coming back, and I read Ethic's post, I might not even bother.
But quite a few people have come back, and I'd guess that even though there are confusing things about trying to find your way back into the game, a good number of you have done it. I'd like to know, so here's a poll: how many of you have left and come back, and how many times?
| Nope, been here since the beginning. | |
|---|---|
| Left and never looked back! | |
| Left once, back for now. | |
| I've quit twice so far. | |
| I've quit more than twice and keep coming back for more! |

I agree, Blizzard is doing an amazing job thus far!

I've had an on-off relationship with WoW over the years. My original warrior was rolled back in patch 1.8, still has the Sargent tag.
So what brought me back? Easier/faster mount and travel times, dual specs, dailies, more focus on pvp/battlegrounds, greatly expanded options for raiders.
Blizz really is trying to cater to all markets and is doing remarkably well in pulling many people who were formerly dissatisfied back into the fold with new features (some that I think should have been in the game long ago, but whatever).

Since I've started, I've had a spotty playing time. I've left quite a few times and returned. I'm probably going to leave again sometime soon but I'm hoping its for good this time.
While I agree that Blizzard is great at having people return to their game, I don't completely give all the credit to them. I found myself returning mostly for the community that the game provides. The quests, places, and other things are extra but I enjoy the people who I meet and get to play with more. I think that's their greatest achievement.

I've left/quit several times due to burnout or just plain boredom.
I'm hitting another boredom spot, but meh... I think I probably won't leave WoW again unless I get completely bored of raiding or something.

The people who answered "left and never looked back" are lying to themselves... they are still reading this website =p
I personally have been here since the *near* beginning of the game and have only taken short -- involuntary -- breaks. I think Blizzard is continually making this game better and I can't wait to see what's next...

I've quit twice. Both times were after I got bored with the expansions. I quit about 8 months into BC and about 6months into WotLK. I like new content, but I don't like spending months grinding one raid instance for minor upgrades. I'll most likely come back again once they release the next major expansion, although the feature that allows for turning off experience is interesting. I might come back for a few months to do some lvl 60/70 raiding.

This is very similar to my experience. For both expansions I was very excited to get into the new content and use the new features. In both cases I leveled a character to max level, did a few raids and then started to get burned out and took 2-3 months off to play other games. Then the x.1 patch would come out and I'd get back into it, turn an alt into a main and start the raid content with a completely different play style.
WoW 1.x I played a mage in endgame
WoW 2.x I played a shaman
WoW 3.x I am now gearing a druid
Next expansion it will probably be a warrior or deathknight.

So, people who have "never looked back" after leaving WoW still read a website dedicated to WoW news? ;)

The only times ive ever quit wow have been for personal reasons, and honestly, leaving for a month because I wanted to concentrate on exams and coursework isnt really leaving.
Good players know when enoughs enough and blizz only seem to force people to spend less time in game with things like...urgh...horse riding.

Sometimes I'd rather read about WoW than play it.

I quit a couple of months before Wrath. Came back for Lich king and now I am bored again so I have canceled my account.

No vote option for people who've never quit, but haven't "been here since the beginning?"
Arashikou Jun 25th 2009 10:04PM
I took that to mean "the beginning of my WoW-playing career" rather than "the beginning of WoW's existence." I think the intent as an "I've never quit WoW" option is fairly clear, regardless of that technicality.

I've closed my account a couple of times and its been no problem starting it back up.
Kadamon Jun 25th 2009 10:00PM
I started back in May of 2005...I only played for a couple months and then pretty well quit until after BC launched. The only reason I even picked it up again was because everyone in my place was playing it and I felt left out.
I'm pondering making another year long break...I don't raid, and I'm just burnt out on leveling right now. My schedule is so whacky and because I work evenings I don't get to play with my friends as much.
...Maybe when I get a day job I'll be back in the game.
Jamesisgreat Jun 25th 2009 10:07PM
What about an option for "Actually, a lot of people seem to be quitting the game at the moment"?
At least that's how it seems to me - 4 or 5 people I play with have quit in the last few weeks.
Ugkul Jun 25th 2009 10:25PM
Have quit twice. Once in October before WotLK; came back for that and quit a month back as it got too boring and I work some nights so raids were out. 3.2 won't bring me back; maybe Brewfest in October and the next expansion. I still think it's a good game, but for now I want to move on to other things.
SgtBaker Jun 26th 2009 12:10AM
I played for almost 2 years before I quit out of sheer boredom.
I keep coming back because most of my friends are still playing. Never manage more than a couple of weeks of "play" though - never made it out of that first harbor in Northrend. I just mostly stand by Stormwind mailbox and chat with friends.
It's not very likely that I'll ever come back to "play" the game anymore, once you fall off the progress wagon, you're pretty much done.
Perhaps next expansion - but most likely not, I'm already 10 levels behind on the curve, so I'll be forced to play months of catchup before I can play with friends again and that's.. mehh..

I drop it here and there because I can't afford the $15/mo or find that one month i didn't even log on because of time. I've dropped for as long as 6-mo before and came back. No problems at all.
I don't complain about not being 80 yet because of it. (Alt-o-holic doesn't help. 8-alts at 10, 1 DK 67 and 1 Pally 65)
Right now I'm on the 'off' part.

I've played pretty regularly since I started, however just last night I canceled my subscription for the first time. My favorite class/spec has been in pretty bad shape for a while now. I have rerolled other ones, and have a few 80s, but my choices are either playing a class/spec/role I don't like and helping my raids, or playing a class/spec/role I do like and gimping my raids. Since I find both rather unappetizing, I canceled my subscription. I'll watch the foums and read the patch notes. If Blizzard ever gets around to fixing up the class/spec I enjoy playing, I'll be back, however I don't see any reason to pay Blizzard to force me into one unenjoyable situation or the other.
