Patch 3.2 PTR: Tauren Druid conversation may reveal lore and expansion secrets
Reader Chad forwarded us this screen shot of a conversation that takes place over on Elder rise in Thunder Bluff between two Tauren on the patch 3.2 PTR. Apparently it actually begins with a new quest by the Dalaran Portals, as pointed out in this thread at Scrolls of Lore, and while the quest leads nowhere, you do get to hear the linked dialogue. In it, Aponi Brightmane, a wounded warrior who wishes to return the front lines in Northrend, and Tahu Sagewind, a Druid, speak together about the history of Druidism, the moon, and the sun. They speak of Elune, whom they know as Mu'sha, one of the eyes of the the Earth Mother. They mention that it seems strange that if Tauren were the first Druids as their legends claim, that all Hamuul Runetotem teaches is the moon power of the Night Elves. Tahu wonders if Druids themselves, because of this, are out of balance. The idea segues back into the idea of the world out of balance due to the influence of the Scourge, wondering if sitting idle in Thunder Bluff is really a good idea when the Northern front is so bleak, wondering if balance must needs to be returned by action.
This whole conversation has started the lore loving community of WoW buzzing, as you can see in part from the Scrolls of Lore thread. There's quite a few theories on what this conversation could herald, some more outlandish than others, but most of them pretty fun to mull over.
First, there's the idea that this could herald some sort of change for Tauren Druids. While Blizzard mostly homogenizes classes even between factions, some are wondering if this is some change for the Druid class. Maybe Taurens will find their "own path" of Druidism based on the sun, the other eye of the Earthmother and the "balance" for the moon. It would be mostly cosmetic, replacing Moonfire with Sunfire and the like, but it might lead to a deeper understanding of Tauren lore and world lore in general as Tauren return to the "original form" of Druidism.
Of course, some people are a bit uncomfortable with the idea of the Tauren truly being the first Druids. In the past, blue posters have suggested Tauren mythology on the subject might be off, and that Malfurion, as established in other lore, truly was the first Druid. Retconning one of the great accomplishments of Night Elven culture does seem a bit unfair to them, to be fair, but retcons are a fact of life with Warcraft mythology.
There's also some more radical ideas about what this could mean for classes. Some people wonder if the sun, called An'she by the Tauren, could actually be an embodiment of the Light, and by discovering it, we could see Aponi become the first Tauren Paladin, perhaps triggering a wider, more permissive class spread for all races. Others wonder if the Sun, being a primary symbol of the Blood Elves, could lead to the Blood Elf Druids so many have wanted since that boss in The Botanica.
Of course, at the same time, people point out that the Light is already the balance to Shadow, so making it the sun and assigning it to balance the moon might be a bit much, especially since Druidic magic generally seems more primal and chaotic than holy magic.
This could also, some say, point to a new expansion and a new class altogether. This conversation, when people are already looking forward to the next step after Arthas dies, could be pointing to a Druid-specific expansion, such as the Emerald Dream, where Tahu could become the first Druid of the Sun, the new hero class, or at least the major representative of the Tauren in the dream.
I'm still thinking the Maelstrom is our most likely candidate for the next expansion, but then again, the Emerald Dream could always be a set of zones or a dual-focus of the lore in the Maelstrom expansion, especially if they decide to connect the Nightmare to, say, the Naga looking to get revenge on the Night Elves for their defeat during the War of the Ancients. But even then, I don't know that making a near-copy of an existing class is the way to implement a new class. It'll just make all the existing Druids feel a bit inferior for being the "old and busted" version of Druids. So I don't know that this is pointing to a new class, at least not one that is too Druid-like.
Of course, one of the simpler explanations, and one that might be my favorite, is that this simply foreshadows a move by the Druids to fight Arthas in patch 3.3. The Cenarion Circle has been sorely underrepresented in Wrath of the Lich King. Their biggest presence is in the D.E.H.T.A, a small group of fanatics who are primarily part of an elaborate inside joke about Hemet Nesingwary's animal killing quests more than anything serious. We've seen novel descriptions and comic book illustrations of Druids calling forth the true wrath of the wild to summon terrifying storms or cause trees and roots to grow instantly and overtake demons or choke cave entrances. The Cenarion Circle could take an active hand in the battle against Arthas in a similar way, and with Tahu sounding anxious to get to the front lines all of a sudden, we could see him out there at the head of a group of Druids, tearing down the walls of the Icecrown Citadel with the power of nature.
Whatever the true meaning of this conversation, and no matter what it might foreshadow, it's definitely a lot of fun to speculate, and seems to point to some pretty juicy happenings down the line, no matter what their nature. With any luck, maybe we'll see the quest line for these 2 character extend, or maybe even see a Night Elf/Alliance equivalent conversation that will provide more insight from another angle. If nothing else, I have a very good feeling we'll see more from Aponi and Tahu in patch 3.3.

How about a new form at level 61 instead?
Sun Form: Become a flaming being of fiery death. All Moon-spells become sun-spells. You cause fire damage dots with your new sunfire spells (some improved version of moonfire?) Attackers that hit you take fire damage. You also can summon sun-lings ( upgraded treants basicly ) to defend you for a minute. Your hurricane spell becomes Sunstorm (idk something sun-ish) does more damage, and puts sunfire dots on all targets hit.

Or they could split the Balance tree up. Like how the feral tree is split between cat and bear (or so i believe, I'm not a druid,so i'm just assuming). Or they could add a new sun spec (spec, not tree) kinda like how the frostfire spec for mages has evolved since the release of wrath, and all that took was the introduction of one new spell.

So moonsunfire spam, alright!
Porky Jun 29th 2009 1:55PM
Sum durids is 4 uh, spam sunfare lol.

I'm betting on it being the new hero class. A while back, people were saying Blizzard hinted at it being archdruid. Maybe it isn't actually the archdruid, but whatever this tauren (Tahu, right?), comes up with. Like that, it already has strong lore behind it, and a leader.
They also won't exclude the Night Elves since they are using the Night Elf form of Druidism. So, you have a new hero class. And, since at the same time it's a completely new class, they can do whatever they want with it.
It could work, imo, and that's what I'm putting my money on. He'll probably also be a strong force against the Lich King. Hell, both Tirion and Morgraine have shown that they aren't strong enough to take on the Lich King, so we might need a new hero on the field. It'd be cool like that. The fight would go from what seemed like Light vs. Darkness, to Nature vs. Undeath (or Nature vs. Unnatural).

It would make a nice segue to the next hero class. Having a new Sun druid NPC show up and help in bringing down the Lich King. The next expansion has people wanting to follow in this new heroes footsteps.

Personally I'd like to see them not focus on something specific and give us a look at the long term plans. The lead story man of WoW has left and there are a lot of lose ends.
For just one example, we just killed the Dragon aspect of Magic....
The Dragon aspect of Nature is being tortured in the Emerald Dream...
The Dragon aspect of Life sits at the temple where they all go to die acting dour...
The Dragon aspect of Death is holed up in the middle of the Easter Kingdoms...
The Dragon aspect of TIme is in a battle against an unknown enemy...
Maybe the druid conversation is the first glimpse at a bigger sweeping change of lore, a birth of a new age. Lets keep in mind that once the lich king is defeated (I seriously doubt we get to kill him) the lore is left with a lot of undead to sort out as well. With the Old god of death killed, the perversion of death defeated, the dragon aspects in a tizzy, is it so hard to believe that the emerald dream becomes one small part of a problem with the Aspects.
Druids have to change cause we have to kill another corrupted aspect...oh and with the void we've left for a god/being of death in the game I think it's about time Deathwing awakens and reminds everyone he's the original big bad of Azeroth.
Orrine Jun 29th 2009 1:47AM
Aspect of Nature is not tortured - she's in Emerald Dream fighting the Nightmare.
Neltharion is not the Aspect of Death - Black Drigonflight is supposed to watch over the earth itself, over the land and mountains.
Angus Jun 29th 2009 3:07AM
Time isn't fighting an unknown enemy.
HE IS the enemy.
Pretty apparent from the 2 quests in dragonblight from the bronze flight.
Think about it, you got power over time. What do you do?
You go forward and find out how you die.
He's either grooming the heroes that kill him by using the infinite dragonflight as a tool to get them into the right place and time to kill him, or he's trying to stop them. Either one has you fighting him eventually.
As Orrine mentioned, Deathwing is the Earth Aspect.
He just got corrupted by the old gods. Cause they were all imprisoned in his domain, so they could whisper to him easily. (I blame Yogg.)

BC took us away from Azeroth and WotLK brought us back. the Emerald Dream would have the Outlands affect since its more of its own world. obviously the hero class for the Emerald Dream would be a Arch Druid or something close to it. BC should have had Demon hunters as its hero class but since BC didn't have them blizzard my just have 2 hero classes in the next EP just for the hell of it. The DK class should have been the Eastern kingdom races only that way the Arch druids could have been Kalimdor only. i just cant see a Gnome arch druid fitting into any lore. but hell we do have tauren DKs X_x
jam Jun 28th 2009 10:38PM
We won't have an "Arch Druid" hero class, or anything with the word "druid" in it. It would just overshadow the "normal" druids.
Bob Dewane Jun 28th 2009 10:44PM
"I don't know that making a near-copy of an existing class is the way to implement a new class. It'll just make all the existing Druids feel a bit inferior for being the "old and busted" version of Druids."
You mean like Death Knights make my prot warrior main feels a bit inferior being the "old busted" version of a tank? Yeah, that wouldn't work at all. No one would play that class. Just like the DKs. What? You mean EVERYBODY has a DK?! You mean they dominate at DPS AND TANKING?!
There is NO DOUBT in my mind that the hero class in the next expansion will be a healing one. Blizz thought there was a tank shortage so they made DKs. Kinda fixed the tanking problem there, didn't it. They will do the same thing for healers. EVERYBODY will roll one and EVERYBODY will think they can heal. Just the thought of a Hero healing class as OP as DKs are makes my head spin. But mark my words. It's coming.
jam Jun 28th 2009 10:47PM
Healing class? Sure.
Arch (or whatever) Druids? Nah.
Bob Dewane Jun 30th 2009 9:23AM
@ jam
I typed it up wrong. I meant Hero class healer, not Hero healing class. Thanks for catching that.
strife Jun 28th 2009 11:22PM
well tuarens were the first to practice Runecasting. them and the dwarves. and considering runecaster was a heroclass and we are seeing it's dynamics in northrend with alot of npcs we fight it would make it viable that they could be going back to there old roots and brining the practice back. that would explore the lore of tuarens and open up for the next hero class. what do you guys think.
RetPallyJil Jun 28th 2009 11:25PM
Quit being Horde-centric like always. Maybe the point of this is that the Tauren are just plain wrong, and the Night Elves are the first.
Amaxe Jun 28th 2009 11:37PM
Given we have a whole zone devoted to druids where nelfs and taurens co-exist, it seems to fly in the face of it all to suggest that tauren druids will take a different path than Nelfs. Did they stop talking to each other? Stop sharing wisdom?
Of course Blizz retcons an awful lot so they might. I just don;t see it as consistent to do so
Angus Jun 29th 2009 9:37AM
Maybe the Tauren will start to share this new insight.
Both races can benefit from better balance in their way of thinking.
Booyaka Jun 28th 2009 11:47PM
Good article, guys.
I'd like to see some Maelstrom in the next xpac, but as for a new class, hasn't Blizzard already said not to expect one so soon after the DK's?
airwalke Jun 29th 2009 12:04AM
Personally, I'm under the impression that there won't be anymore heroic classes until the last expansion, where players can "upgrade" their classes into Heroic Classes in order to be able to do battle with Sargeras. (Mage -> Arch Mage, Paladin -> Crusader, Priest -> Prophet, etc. etc.)
