Faction changes coming to the World of Warcraft
As if the Engineering changes today weren't enough for you, Nethaera has just announced a major bombshell:
Blizzard is implementing a faction switching service.
There is no immediate indication if this will be a free service or a pay service, however based on their past name change, character appearance, and server transfer services it likely will carry with it a small fee.
People have been talking about the ability for characters to switch races and factions for a long time. It appears to finally be here. Neth mentions that "the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm."
She goes on to say that this will be carefully orchestrated to limit the impact in gameplay, and that they don't have all the details worked out yet. There are a lot of things to work out in this – mounts, quests, tabards, pets, achievements, etc... You don't really want to see a Blood Elf Paladin riding around on a Human Charger.
Stay tuned for more information on this very cool change as it's released.
The full announcement after the break.
The announcement from Nethaera:
We wanted to give everyone a very early heads-up that, in response to player requests, we're developing a new service for World of Warcraft that will allow players to change their faction from Alliance to Horde or Horde to Alliance. There's still much work to do and many details to iron out, but the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm. Players who ended up creating and leveling up characters on the opposite factions from their friends have been asking for this type of functionality for some time, and we're pleased to be getting closer to being able to deliver it.
As with all of the features and services we offer, we intend to incorporate the faction-change service in a way that won't disrupt the gameplay experience on the realms, and there will be some rules involved with when and how the service can be used. The number of variables involved increases the complexity of implementing this service, but we plan to take the time needed to ensure that it lives up to expectations before officially rolling it out. We'll go into much more detail on all of this here at http://www.WorldofWarcraft.com as development progresses. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that because this type of functionality requires extensive internal testing well in advance of release, you may be seeing bits and pieces of the service in the test builds we use for the public test realms moving forward.

Holy cow - For Reals!?

Awesome indeed!
However, I wonder how this will affect the balance on servers where one faction dominates? I mean, say you play Alliance but horde outnumbers you on your server. What is to prevent you from changing to horde and upsetting the balance even more?
But other than that I am pretty excited. It is a well needed feature even though I doubt I will ever use it (maybe we could convice all the kids to go back to alliance??).

Well first of all, i think it's going to be pretty impossible to change faction on a pvp server, without switching servers as well. Unless that you only have one character on that server.
Secondly, those kind of restrictions will be implemented i believe. On my server Horde : Ally is 2:1. I'm sure Ally > Horde won't be possible, but Horde > Ally will be.

This is most likely being done precisely to solve those balance issues. Once the system is in place they can announce free faction changes for the larger faction.

Maybe this is why they brought in faction specific sets for PVP, if you're going to be fighting against Taurens and gnomes you're going to need some clear way to mark them as an enemy or an ally.

That settles it, Blizz' calendars are off. They think it's April 1st again already. Somebody tell them it isn't.

I originally rolled a dwarf hunter which I got to 70, then re-rolled a belf priest on my friends' server when my guild broke up. My hunter's barely been touched since, even with the expansion. If I had the opportunity to switch faction there'd be a pretty good chance I'd bring him over to my new server, so yeah, looking forward to this.

If it's being done to fix balance issues, I could see them offering free faction changes in one direction on very unbalanced servers. Sort of like how they offer free realm transfers when they want to redistribute population.

Little kids going to the alliance would be horrible on the Scryers where alliance outnumbers us horde like 2.7 to one
Eternauta Jun 29th 2009 5:11PM
Cool!
Manatank Jun 29th 2009 5:21PM
I don't see how they are going to be able to do this with out also letting us change races. I mean, I really doubt we are going to see toon switch sides but maintain their race, so I would assume we get to pick a race on the other side of the same class? If so, can we trade factions, and then trade back to switch to a race of our choosing?

New Achievement: Gain Exalted reputation with all 10 racial factions.

I personally play alliance and have always wished I had rolled horde whenever I am in completely FAIL BGs, but I don't think that giving players COMPLETE control is a good thing. It takes away from what gives your toon its personality. The barber shop was fine, but PLEASE stop selling everything in the game. When does the Tier 8.5 ulduar store open on blizzards website..? Pretty soon this game will be like the sims. Free to play but you have to rent your gear. STOP BLIZZARD PLEASE!
Panduh Jun 29th 2009 5:46PM
only they wouldnt implement an achievement like that cuz you arent allowed to buy anything thatll put you ahead of the other players with real currency, then live realms wouldnt be much diff from private servers where you can buy GM status or a homemade sword of 1k truths... alot of ppl (especially on the forums) are freaking out how this will ruin the game... but they did say they will iron out all the little things and get it perfect so it DOESNT (HUGE ASS emphasis on 'DOESNT') affect gameplay... my suggestions are monitoring how many horde/ally there on on a server and making sure the balance doesnt get outta hand.
oldwisemonk Jun 29th 2009 5:49PM
@Manatank
I was thinking that exact same thing. For all those Belf DKs that got to 80, farmed mats, rep-slaved and geared up ... and then wished they had rolled Troll.
Really? Just me?
PeeWee Jun 29th 2009 6:37PM
It'll be just like server transfers and re-customizing, a one-month cooldown at least. At first, you could transfer once every 90 days in the EU before it was lowered to one month.

"New Achievement: Gain Exalted reputation with all 10 racial factions."
That won't happen for one reason: switching factions will almost certainly be a paid service, and Blizzard wants to steer far away from having any in-game achievements be dependent on paying extra money.
If I remember correctly, someone crunched the numbers and figured out that it was practically impossible to get 100 mounts without going for a specific build -- Paladin or Warlock with Engineering and Tailoring, for a total of 7 "free" mounts -- or by buying Loot Cards to get some of the extra-special mounts. I'm sure that's why they added 11 mounts to the Argent Tournament in 3.1 and are in the process of adding more (and shoring up the faction inequalities by giving some Horde races new land mounts, putting the Venomhide Ravasaur in as a counterpart to the Winterspring Frostsaber, etc.)
Zuljo Jul 6th 2009 9:26AM
@ Jay
There are 2 people on my server I know of with the 100 mounts achievment - an undead warrior with mining and blacksmithing, and a night elf druid with leatherworking and skinning.
Whoever crunched those numbers was wrong.
