Fishing for profit

AV observes that there are four types of fish most likely to be lucrative, and it's no accident that three of them (the Musselback Sculpin, the Glacial Salmon, and the Nettlefish) are the main ingredients of the Fish Feast, a valuable (although generalized) raid buff. I spend roughly an hour a week fishing up the materials for these to cover our raids and had never even looked to see what they retailed for. After reading over AV's comments, I took a peek at my server's AH and had a /headdesk moment discovering that my main could have been a much wealthier character if I'd just spent a little time yanking up a few extra fish here and there.
So if your character is at or close to the Northrend fishing cap (and especially if you're still on the lookout for the Sea Turtle, which requires you to fish in Northrend pools anyway), give your AH a look and see how the fish are selling. You might be pleasantly surprised. And, as always, I highly recommend El's Extreme Anglin' as a great resource for the beginning and advanced fishermen out there.

On a side note, the reason the Dragonfin Angelfish is the other most profitable fish, is likely due to it being the single best tanking survivability food. The average WoW culture tends to expect tanks to min-max to a greater level than other classes, thus pushing the cost of tanking food to a higher price than DPS/Healer food.

There's also no non-fish counterpart for strength food (eg salmon or shoveltusk for spellpower) and Fish Feast doesn't cut it either. Dragonfin Angelfish have the monopoly.

I find the AP/Agi food buffs to be the best sellers in general.

Dragonfins always sell very well - they're the ingredients for the only +str and +agi foods in the game.

Well this was profitable up until roughly 10 minutes ago ¬_¬

Next patch will bring Dragonfin prices down a little. Blackened Dragonfin will require only 1 fish and not 2..........

Oily Blackmouths have always been a good source of revenue for lowbies IMHO. Granted not as good as 1 stack of copper, but still good. When you get to mid levels you start to fish up chests with bolts of silk and mage weave which sells for a nice profit.

If you're also an alchemist, or have an alt that has high enough alchemy, fishing suddenly becomes even more profitable.
And at least on RP servers (not sure otherwise?) if you could cook deviate fish into savory deviate delight, fishing has always been highly profitable off that one item alone.

If you're doing the Dalaran daily fishing quest look out for the battered Jungle hat

As it has no level requirements its ideal for bank alts, I sell these regularly for 25G

...and don't forget to add it to your sell junk addon (or autoprofit, etc) as an exception! I got two of these hats today (as I do the fishing daily on 3 toons). I didn't think about it, and accidentally sold one to the vendor via my addon. When the second toon got his it struck me, and I finally added it as an exception.

This is very much off-topic, but I just noticed that Karatechop is no longer featured at the top of wow.com.
Thank you to whoever finally heard our pleas to rid him from that section. :)

I can't agree more. I have gotten pretty sick of seeing that ignorant little gnome mug up there every time I come to the site.

Since 3.1, the popularity of fishing has soared, and auction house prices for Glacial Salmon, Nettlefish and Sculpin fell off a cliff, especially since all three can be farmed in Wintergrasp.
