Patch 3.2: Argent Coliseum raid story and encounters, Part 3

With your dumb faction leaders rebuked for causing needless deaths, it's time to move on to what Tirion calls the final challenge.
ENCOUNTER 4: THE VAL'KYR TWINS
Tirion Fordring: Only by working together will you defeat the final challenge. From the depths of Icecrown come two of the Scourge's most powerful lieutenants -- fierce val'kyr, winged harbingers of the Lich King!
Before I start the actually summary of this fight, I'll pose this question: Have you ever played the game Ikaruga? Yes? Okay. Because this fight is Ikaruga.
For those not in the know, I'll break it down.
Eydis Darkbane and Fjola Lightbane are each one color, Light or Dark. The Val'kyr will turn members of the raid Light or Dark as well.
Dark Essence -- You have the Dark Essence! You absorb Dark damage, deal less damage to Dark targets and deal bonus damage to Light targets. Absorbing Dark damage can cause a Surge of Speed!
Light Essence -- You have the Light Essence! You absorb Light damage, deal less damage to Light targets and deal bonus damage to Dark targets. Absorbing Light damage can cause a Surge of Speed!
Absorbing Dark or Light damage brings up your buff stack, and when it reaches 100 you proc:
Surge of Speed -- Increases move speed by 50% for 10 sec. Stacks. (0 yd, cast: 0 seconds
I'm unsure why this speed boost is necessary, but it must mean something. There are a ton of spells that talk about summoning Light or Dark "Bullets", which makes me think of Ikaruga even more.
The twins have a number of attacks and dual spells, like:
Twin's Pact -- The Twin's Pact heals for 10% of their total HP.
Power of the Twins -- The shared power of the Twins increases Physical damage dealt by 20% and allows the Twin to Dual Wield for 15 sec.
Val'kyr Quickness -- The Power of the Twins increases attack speed by 10% for 15 sec. Stacks.
There's more, too! A pair of void zones that each deal Dark or Light damage, on the fly switching of colors, a spell that allows damage to be shared between the sisters ... it seems like a crazy fight. Like Thaddius 2.0. You'll be attempting to DPS whatever Twin is your color opposite, though, is the heart of it. Oh, and don't kill your raid members of the opposite color.
With the Val'kyr twins defeated, everyone's ready to celebrate ... when the bottom drops out of the Coliseum and drops you the challengers into Naz'anak, the Forgotten Depths.
And that's where you meet an old friend.
ENCOUNTER 5: ANUB'ARAK
Anub'arak: Ahhh ... our guests have arrived, just as the Master promised.
Yep, he's back. Never mind that we took his head and his carapace. It doesn't matter. What matters is that he's here now, as a raid boss, just like everyone wanted.
He's brought back a number of his trademark abilities:
Impale -- Fires spikes up through the floor above Anub'arak, inflicting 11310 to 12690 Physical damage to anyone in their path. This attack ignores armor, but cannot penetrate Permafrost.
Leeching Swarm -- Releases a swarm of insects that attack the caster's enemies, leeching 10% of each target's current health every 1 sec. A minimum of 250 health will be leeched. This damage heals Anub'arak.
He also summons a number of different adds, including Burrowers. They have a buff similar to Auriaya's cats:
Spider Frenzy -- Increases attack and casting speeds by 50% for each Nerubian Burrower within 12 yds
.
Now, it appears that his Impale is back and better than ever, but this time he'll also Pursue someone with it, chasing them and causing Impale spikes to appear in his path. Clearly the aforementioned Permafrost works into this encounter somehow, but I'm unsure what causes the Permafrost to form or whether it's already there in a predetermined location.
Permafrost -- Freezes the ground in a small area, preventing most creatures from burrowing through it and reducing movement speed over the area by 70%.
Judging from the achievement, it's possible to kill Swarm scarabs with Impale spikes, which may be the most efficient way to deal with Anub'arak's post-30% swarm 'n' submerge tactic.
And that's my Coliseum raid speculation roundup. We'll post actual impressions of the fights once they get opened on the PTR -- thanks for reading and keep an eye out!

Anub'arak gets a bigger and better role. Good. Arthas' protector and guide in the Lore deserves a better role than just a lower level instance boss.

But I'm still sad we didn't get to see more of AN. In WC3 it was pictured as a gigantic maze-like city, and now in WoW we just jump over it without actually seeing it? I want AN as its own raid just like Ulduar, with 14 bosses. That'd be epic.

I still think that Azjol'Nerub would have been better as an entirely subterranean zone with a few instances and a raid, rather than two Northrend 5 man instances. What happened to the 25 man Azjol'Nerub raid that was rumoured?

This is going to be a very very big repair bill...

I turns out Azjol Nerub was merely a setback.

I was hoping that there would be a Nerubian raid with this expansion. Oh well.

The fight details aside, these bits of dialogue (in addition to the 5-man ones in the earlier post), make me pretty frustrated with what Blizz writers are doing with Thrall.
Thrall: I've got Garrosh under control. I will not allow any outbursts from him. I want peace with the Alliance, really.
Garrosh then apparently has a huge fight with Varian resulting in the death of faction champions, which Tirion mourns as a needless waste.
I mean, where was Thrall? Having a tea party with Jana? I actually like the growing Horde/Alliance conflict, but leaving Thrall as a peace loving orc while all the conflict escalates around him makes him appear extremely weak. He apparently can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk.
Say what you want about Varian, but at least he's consistent.
Nene Jun 30th 2009 2:02PM
"I mean, where was Thrall? Having a tea party with Jaina?"
Well, yeah.
He doesn't get to see her very much, so when they're in the same space they bugger off to have a snuggle right there in the corner. What else do you think he was doing in the Ulduar trailer while Garrosh and Varian were emoraging at each other?
Spiraea Jun 30th 2009 2:17PM
You'll probably dead on with the Thrall kicking it back with Jaina while all this was happening but calling Thrall weak is crazy. Granted, he much rather not fight (he's a lover, not a fighter XD) but as seen in the "Battle For The Undercity", the orc can hold his own in combat
Irem Jun 30th 2009 2:47PM
I think they're trying to show that Thrall's made a mistake with Garrosh, and that he's beginning to realize that himself, but it's taking a while. One of Thrall's best traits--his willingness to give just about anyone another chance--isn't serving him well here, and hopefully it'll be the catalyst for him understanding that not everyone is as rational and trustworthy as he is and that he needs to keep a closer eye on his people, or risk someone else taking power.
I would at least like them to spell out why it's necessary for Garrosh to come along with Thrall to these incredibly sensitive diplomatic functions, or why he was allowed to take power in Northrend (Thrall's hoping he'll learn by doing? He's under more political pressure than we've seen "onstage"?), because otherwise it's obvious that Thrall's being forced to hold the Idiot Ball to advance the plot.
But if he and Jaina want to go snog in the corner, I won't complain.

valid point jealouspirate,
I have never played a level-capped hored, but even as an alliance player, I kind of like the idea of Thrall being an intellectual, peace desiring leader. From a storyline standpoint, his spats with Garrosh do show a lack in his ability to control his subordinate.
The lore-folk keep telling us that the ally/good vs. horde/bad is not the way it is anymore, and that this is a "new horde".
The most interesting way to actually show this in the storyline would be to have Thrall start to show some actual control over Garrosh (like 4realz this time tho) by threatening to remove him... or something that is actually a convincing show of superiority that Thrall ain't playin no mo. Then, once that concept is completely established, have Garrosh go behind Thrall's back and attack and kill some relatively important alliance figure-head (should be a human, someone close to Varian, imo). The important plotline would be Thrall and the rest of the horde truly having nothing to do with it. During the attack, Garrosh is also killed (but maybe not before he takes out some innocent civilians infront of the king =O). This throws Varian over the deep end, and he snaps on a mini-arthas kind of level. Now the alliance king decides on an all-out genocide of the orcs, who have no idea its coming. This storyline becomes much more interesting if Varian can be cast in a light of overreaction, like blatant overreaction.
It would be really cool to see the tables turn by having the humans become the rage filled savages, and the orcs evolving into an honorable, peaceful race.
The undead can stay all creepy and evil though. A happy undead guy would totally suck the fun out of that race, lol.
Unkind Jul 3rd 2009 4:30PM
The fact is, Garrosh is the type of leader the Horde needs. The Alliance is weak, directionless, led by an emo moron, and should be wiped from Northrend and the old world. We're the HORDE for crying out loud, start to act like it. Depose Thrall and put in a real leader who knows the taste of blood.
cflay109 Jun 30th 2009 1:22PM
So basicly blizz just took Anub Arak and threw him in as a boss? Way to make a more creative encounter. Reminds me of Kel Thuzad version 2 only this time it is the opposite.
Vanyl Jun 30th 2009 1:25PM
For the eredar encounter it kind of seemed fromw aht you wrote that you need to have the fire debuff cleansed not healed through to avoid having the debuffed played being consumed but later you said you had to be healed through it.
Serenity Jun 30th 2009 1:51PM
This raid is going to lead into the Nerubian Kingdom Raid before we fight the The Lich King himself.
bob Jun 30th 2009 2:01PM
That would be so epic if they really were keeping a whole raid completely secret. Lore wise it really dosen't make sense to have AN just a 5 man. The Nerubians are a major part of the Scourge and right next to Icecrown. I don't see how we could take or hold Icecrown with such a large force right next door.
Alanid Jul 1st 2009 10:09AM
raising a fair point there, it could be that we go into Icecrown through azjol-nerub!
Ozma Jun 30th 2009 1:36PM
Sooo.. Anub'arak will be tougher than an old god?
andy Jun 30th 2009 2:10PM
meh i stopped analisysing the order blizz does things ages ago. lets face it aparently we have, lich, blood elf, naga , random emo demon elf, " the same lich again" all > an old god.
the order we kill things in =/= their "lore" strength, blizz just makes them in a way they fit the game, other wise we would have some very boring ,linear and predictable raid progression.
DanH Jul 1st 2009 6:08AM
A Snowplain Snobold is tougher than Archmage Arugal.
