You know, I'm one of the biggest lore nerds there is, and I really don't understand why people are crying about how this breaks lore. It's a gameplay conceit, period, and god knows we have a thousand of those that don't make any sense from a lore perspective (language restrictions and Forsaken not actually classed as undead). I hope none of the rules lawyers that are QQing about this are gnomes with goblin engineering or male Night Elf priests or Draenei DKs who use Gift of the Naaru or any of the other billion things that were offered as options in the game for the sake of fairness in gameplay despite not really making sense in lore. It's the nature of an MMO for goodness sake. Frankly, I prefer the magical handwave here to some half-assed explanation that just insults my intelligence as a player and a writer. As far as I'm concerned, my very first character, an 80 Draenei mage, retired from adventuring, bought a condo in Dalaran, and works full time for the Kirin Tor. The Blood Elf mage that will pop up in her place was part of Illidan's expedition and has survived in the wilds of Northrend all this time. Problem solved.
