I don't agree. I see room for a "pop a soul shard for temporary combat boost" sort of mechanic that could make warlocks very different from mages. Think of the difference between a Sorcerer and a Wizard in D&D (or at least neverwinter nights :)A sorcerer has raw power they throw around, a wizard learns a limited amount of more powerful spells which they are able to cast more quickly, but only temporarily. So you could make a warlock a necromatic wizard, and a mage a sorcerer. The warlock would blow a soul shard to allow them to temporarily use their more powerful spells, or for greater mobility or defenses, but without the shard they are limited to less powerful abilities. It would make for an interesting resource mechanic a-la Runes or Combo points where a Warlocks power fluctuates depending on Soul Shard up or down time. They might not be doing it like that, and you might not like that idea, but there is room for at the very least doing sometihng interesting with it.
