Why won't Blizzard let me change my race?

Paid character customization is nice and all, but it won't let me change my race. At first I was fine with it because I thought it would create all sorts of problems from quests to factions to racial mounts... but then Blizzard drops a bombshell of an announcement: faction changes are coming to Azeroth! Implicitly, this meant being able to change races, too. Nethaera squashes that idea with a resounding 'No'. Players could only change to the opposing faction's race, which is weird. No, really, it's weird. I mean, I'll be able to transform my Horde Blood Elf Death Knight into an Alliance Draenei but I can't make him an Orc? Why not?
Some would say it's to prevent min-maxing. Alex pointed out that PvP players in particular would convert to Humans for the extra trinket slot or to Forsaken for the Will of the Forsaken. That creates the potential for upsetting racial balance in factions where everyone would be Human or Undead. Maybe. So why are there more Blood Elves than any other Horde race? Or maybe Blizzard is afraid of other races falling into disuse, with all Horde rolling Blood Elves. Maybe. I mean, I'm sick of my Blood Elf. Maybe it's just me but I really wish I'd rolled a race that isn't overcrowding Azeroth.
The thing is, faction change, no matter how you put it, is way more complex and has deeper implications. Yet Blizzard insists on putting out the service despite all the potential complications -- going so far as to announce the service long before it launches. From a company that might as well trademark the ironic use of 'soon', that's a rather uncommon move. Faction change has more impact on the play experience than race change, so why can't race change be part of character customization? I can't for the life of me figure out why race change isn't allowed but faction change is. Surely Blizzard isn't acknowledging that racial bonuses are compelling enough to forgo all other races? With all character options suddenly becoming limitless, why is same-faction race change so taboo? Break that wall down, Blizzard. I want my Orc.

I want a cookie :D

I still want my pony.
Robert M Jul 2nd 2009 5:30PM
Cookie? As a BE, you may be more inclined to want a Louis Vitton man bag though.
Sorry Zach, but little sympathy for any BE who decides he wants to change his race to keep his man card.

Man I would LOVE race changes! I could abuse the game so much! When I had Sirens Call, I could have gone Troll for the bow racial and AP buff, now that I have a gun, I could go Orc for the better racial buff, or now I can even go Dwarf for the crit racial.

Zach, maybe you can change your BE to an Ally race, wait however long Blizz is gonna make us wait to switch faction again (which they'll presumably do), then switch back to an orc. Sure, it may end up costing $50 and several weeks, but you said you want this badly right?

Yup, sorry Zach, once you go Blood Elf, you never go back. You're one of us now! Plus, who wants a smelly green Orc? Yuck!

It seems extemely clumsy. So what, if I change my level 37 night elf rogue to an orc, and then 3 years down the line when I'm level 120 and I think, hey I'd like to be alliance Blizzard will say "Sorry, but you remember years ago you started as a night elf... well we do!" Blizzard never forgets apparently.
It just seems daft. If you're truly horrifically concerns with race balances you open limited race changes.
Sorry: Orcs are full, you can be undead or tauren.
So what if I change my class to be a human for the racial, I could roll a human if I wanted but it would take forever. Equally I could roll a character of the opposite faction, it would just take forever. So why is the latter good enough reason to allow faction changes, but the former is not enough to allow race changes?
IF anything it makes way way more sense to allow race changes than to allow faction changes. Think of how much less you have to mess around with - mounts, faction reps, quests done, phasing etc.
It's a really strange restriction.

@Robert M
Methinks he's more interested in the free Expertise while using Axes and awesome On-Click racial than getting his Man Card back...

Chances are, there will be a race change if you really want it.
Transfer factions, wait for the cooldown, transfer back. No problem.
Or just delete that fancypants embarrassment to the Horde.
brownyboi Jul 3rd 2009 8:45AM
Here's a radical idea...
Level a new alt. Seriously, shouldn't take too long; grab some heirloom shoulders and with the new mount changes you'll be there in a few weeks.
Easy.
... Blood Elf Death Knight ... *shakes head and mutters*
Groth Jul 3rd 2009 3:19AM
Having read Neth's post, if you change faction, then change back, you dont get a choice of race the second time round. So you could change to Human, but then when you transfer back, you'd automatically be a Blood Elf again.
If you want an orc, roll an orc dk. At least you wont have to level to 50 first.

Why does this post read "WAAAAAAAAAH I WANT MY CHANGES AND IF NOT IM GOING TO ABUSE MY POWER ON A LARGE WOW BLOG TO GET MY POINT ACROSS."
Must be the chicken I had earlier.
Bubsa Jul 2nd 2009 5:29PM
I must have eaten the same chicken.
Don't worry Zach. Whinge a bit more and I'm sure Blizz will implement this change, for a fee of course.
Nex Jul 2nd 2009 5:26PM
Aye, you're not the only one who ate that chicken.
TLDR verison of this post:
GHOSTCRAWLER, I WANT MY PONY!
tatsumasa Jul 2nd 2009 5:30PM
blizzard's attitude is now that they want to please everyone; balance, structure, lore, uniqueness, and common sense be damned.
keep crying and i'm sure you'll get it. do it on the forums and it will probably happen sooner. and if you really want it tomorrow, write a letter to their customer service department.
Astemus Jul 2nd 2009 5:37PM
How many times do we have to hear you whine about this, really. This site is supposedly professional. Did the owner let their 16 year old son write for the site now?
Zerounit Jul 2nd 2009 5:47PM
I guess you can't write an opinion piece on a WoW blog site anymore.
Kylenne Jul 2nd 2009 5:50PM
Because that's exactly what it was.
It wasn't a blog post, it was forum QQ with better spelling and grammar, right down to the 12 year old boy BE bashing.
thebombmeister Jul 2nd 2009 6:39PM
It is bloody weird the way they don't let you same faction change though, you must admit. Heck, I couldn't care less about it (I'm a happy Ally player) but I still find it odd.
