Finding Blizzard's Cataclysm
The other day, we posted that Blizzard had trademarked the name "Cataclysm," and right after that, the community exploded with speculation: is it the name of WoW's next expansion, Blizzard's next-gen MMO, or some other project? Nothing is guaranteed yet (is it ever with Blizzard?), but the Internets have pretty much landed on the new expansion as the answer. "Cataclysm" actually means "a momentous and violent event marked by overwhelming upheaval and demolition," but it also has a pretty specific relation to water, and that's got lots of people thinking that it's the name of the Maelstrom expansion. In fact, The Sundering, or the world event in Azeroth's history where the Well of Eternity was destroyed and the Maelstrom (that swirly thing in the middle of the map) was created, was referred to as "the Cataclysm." So there you go -- pretty solid evidence, even though, as I said, nothing is guaranteed until we hear it from Blizz.Stropp's got an interesting piece of speculation that says though "Cataclysm" is still probably the next expansion, the event the word refers to has yet to happen. He claims that if Blizzard really wants to speed up the 1-50 leveling process, they should just destroy Old Azeroth as we know it, and just have all the new characters start at level 50. That would be pretty nuts, but then again, Blizzard's never shown a real affinity for the old content, and by the next expansion, we'll be heading up to level 90 or even 100.
Finally, there's this: when the news first broke last week, we noticed that the wowcataclysm.com domain had just lapsed when the trademark was registered. But apparently, as a few of our commenters have noticed, the Australian person who originally owned it has re-acquired it for another year. So if "Cataclysm" really is the next expansion, Blizzard will have to lay claim to the domain (either by buying it or trying to enforce their trademark), or (more likely) put the domain somewhere else.

while this may be good short term, i really hope that it isn't.

That is honestly the dumbest speculation I've heard in a while. There is no way they will destroy Azeroth. Even if they don't plan on adding to the old world, they're not going to just get rid of it. How would that even work? What if I want to go run an old instance or work on my Argent Dawn rep? To say nothing of the fact that all the capital cities would be gone. It's a terrible idea, and I really don't know why it was even brought up.
People need to stop coming up with ridiculous ways to get rid of the low-levels. It's not going to happen. Stop complaining.

I don't understand why everyone is automatically fixating on the Maelstrom. While there's a good chance it will be that there is also the Emerald Dream to consider. Or maybe, the next Xpac centers around the idea that the Titans didn't receive the altered message from Rhonin properly and they came to start reoriginating. Or maybe, just maybe, Sargeras is coming back. There are a lot of possibilities to consider.

Wiping out the EK and Kalimdor would be nuts. But I've believed there was a big change coming to the old world zones ever since Blizzcon last year. Having those old zones wiped out may seem extreme and I don't know what they'd do to replace them. I don't think they would make all new toons start at 55 like the DK. Don't want to see that happen either, as much as I hate the 1-60 leveling. I just think this idea fits with something from the Dev Q&A at last years Blizzon...
Q: We’re taking over northrend in this expansion, what about the next?
A: Something else! starcraft 2! not what you expect in a very good way. it’s not about comments, but i guess it kind of is but boldness is next! unbelievable boldness.
Nothing could be more bold than this....

wow you're right, I forgot that quote.
Honestly, wiping out the old world wouldn't necessarily mean removing it from the game entirely. All they would have to do is phase KM and EK so that once you hit level 81 the contents became something completely different. Say, for example, that they sunk. All they would have to do is raise the water level in the phased zones.
The sucky part about this is that any character that progressed into the new expansion would no longer be able to do an oldworld instance.
Alanid Jul 3rd 2009 6:27PM
Could be old world phasing, where the naga have attacked the old world en masse and are trying to drown it somehow. So people who have played to lvl 80 will be able to see it but newbies will not. Phasing is the way forward!

We still need a raid level Hogger. Wonder if he will show up in the Caverns of Time Cataclysm instance...
pastasaus Jul 3rd 2009 7:18PM
are you sure you really want to stand face to face to the most evil creature of azeroth?

***SPOILERS***
Hi, and welcome to a week ago, where it was announced, right here on this site, that Hogger was going to be one of the memories in the Argent Confessor Paletress encounter in the Coliseum 5-man. Might not be exactly "raid level" but close enough for government work.
Dreadskull Jul 3rd 2009 6:36PM
What'd be awesome is if for whenever they do have an expansion based on the Maelstrom, they'd toss in a raid instance that goes through the War of the Ancients, and the players would all be Night Elves (or in the later parts of the war, Earthen and Furbolg) fighting alongside Malfurion and the others as they make their way to the capital city and destroy the Well of Eternity. One example of a fight piece would be fighting on a road against waves of Burning Legion enemies and keeping the felhunters/eredar casters off of the Moon Guard and Illidan as they concentrate on conjuring up powerful spells to wipe out the enemies, and the bosses could include Hakkar the Houndmaster and Xavius, as well as possibly some Infinite Dragonflight members who're trying to prevent the Well of Eternity from being destroyed (which would have meant the end of the world since Sargeras would be able to step into the world soon enough). Heck, maybe even add in the piece with Neltharion becoming Deathwing and attacking the NElves, unless that's just something that was added in because of Krasus/Rhonin jumping into the events back then.

How could Blizzard enforce their trademark to get that domain name? "Wow" has been in use since long, long before it became an abbreviation for "world of warcraft". "Cataclysm" is also an old world. Can Blizzard really claim an already existing domain name simply because they want that name for their product?
Also, would they have to claim it under US or Australian law?
tutti Jul 3rd 2009 6:42PM
Old word, not world. Sorry.
Chamual Jul 3rd 2009 6:47PM
They can trademark in respect of what it is. So no-one else is allowed to create a proveably similar game (online mmrpg, or even just a computer game) with that name.
tutti Jul 3rd 2009 6:57PM
Yes, but can they claim the website based on that alone?
Kydoodlebob Jul 3rd 2009 6:46PM
Hey all!
As I posted in a comment before, a few people noticed on the 26th for moments that on the realm selection list a server popped up named "Maestrom 3 Test" I was one of the few people to be on at the time to discover this. I made a video with the picture I took and some references and proof from other website that a lot of websites are getting e-mails about this.
The Video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUMwQqDsQjs
Thanks and I tell you, the Maelstrom will be the next expansion. I have proof =P
Gizen Jul 3rd 2009 6:48PM
Personally, I find that far too vague to actually be handsdown proof the next expansion is Maelstrom.
traptinacivicsi Jul 4th 2009 5:32AM
This guy also commented on videos about the Beta Program that lets you type in your account info and wait for Blizzard to send you a confirmation e-mail, stating that it was real. Then he posts this garbage that he either photoshopped or took pictures of on a private server, being he has no video proof of him clicking the tabs etc, and as far as we know now, it's called cataclysm and not maelstrom. Plus there's already a server named Maelstrom so this could have easily been done in MSPaint as well.
This guy has hopes of getting your account info, it's as simple as that.
Drager Jul 3rd 2009 6:52PM
Seems to me that they could be getting into a sticky intellectual property area with Wizards of the Coast and the Dragonlance series. In those stories there is a tremendous world event called the Cataclysm that results in a giant whirlpool in the middle of the ocean called the Maelstrom
ChiperSoft Jul 3rd 2009 8:23PM
If that were the case then they'd already be in hot water. The cataclysm/sundering has been an established part of WoW lore since Warcraft 1. The maelstrom is already there, it's on your world map.
