Finding Blizzard's Cataclysm
The other day, we posted that Blizzard had trademarked the name "Cataclysm," and right after that, the community exploded with speculation: is it the name of WoW's next expansion, Blizzard's next-gen MMO, or some other project? Nothing is guaranteed yet (is it ever with Blizzard?), but the Internets have pretty much landed on the new expansion as the answer. "Cataclysm" actually means "a momentous and violent event marked by overwhelming upheaval and demolition," but it also has a pretty specific relation to water, and that's got lots of people thinking that it's the name of the Maelstrom expansion. In fact, The Sundering, or the world event in Azeroth's history where the Well of Eternity was destroyed and the Maelstrom (that swirly thing in the middle of the map) was created, was referred to as "the Cataclysm." So there you go -- pretty solid evidence, even though, as I said, nothing is guaranteed until we hear it from Blizz.Stropp's got an interesting piece of speculation that says though "Cataclysm" is still probably the next expansion, the event the word refers to has yet to happen. He claims that if Blizzard really wants to speed up the 1-50 leveling process, they should just destroy Old Azeroth as we know it, and just have all the new characters start at level 50. That would be pretty nuts, but then again, Blizzard's never shown a real affinity for the old content, and by the next expansion, we'll be heading up to level 90 or even 100.
Finally, there's this: when the news first broke last week, we noticed that the wowcataclysm.com domain had just lapsed when the trademark was registered. But apparently, as a few of our commenters have noticed, the Australian person who originally owned it has re-acquired it for another year. So if "Cataclysm" really is the next expansion, Blizzard will have to lay claim to the domain (either by buying it or trying to enforce their trademark), or (more likely) put the domain somewhere else.

I like the idea of something being raised out of the Maelstrom. Azshara's new kingdom is finally ready and then she blurps it up out of the middle of the sea. It could make for some fun pre-expansion events and the "Cataclysm" could be that - the naga empire rising from the sea and wreaking havoc with the environment. It doesn't have to affect the old world permantently - they could do something like insert new realm-wide quests (like the AQ quests) where everyone has to contribute to prepare for the coming tidal wave to stop it from destroying the land.
If the players fulfill the quests, then they save their server and get a special achievement and some rewards. If the players don't, then some NPCs end up filling in, but no achievement/reward for players for completion. (Although it would be kind of funny if any server that didn't get their act together was destroyed - whoosh!)

With the new phasing system i would REALLY love to return to the xroads or silverpine forrest/hillsbrad to battle a new enemy in those area's.
It doesn't have to be a expansion but returning to the old world and having OG/SW/UC/IF as capital city (means we have lowlevels and 80+ meeting eachother) for some new questlines would really enhance the wow experience

They wouldn't necessarily need the "wowcataclysm" domain name anyhow, unless the title of the expansion is simply "Cataclysm" (and as cool as that might be, I'm thinking it would be very misleading). Wrath of the Lich King's site, IIRC, was wrathofthelichking.com or somesuch--that is to say the whole title.

I tried to read through all of the comments before posting this one in case someone had mentioned this already, but if I missed it, I'm sorry for beating a dead horse.
If Blizzard did destroy the Old World in some way or another, what would ever happen to places in the Old World that Blizzard has said they would revisit like current-day Hyjal and Uldum? Uldum in particular pretty much *can't* be destroyed because it continues on with the Titan story-line.
Also, at the WWI Q&A Panel, someone said, "Uldum is a dungeon that a lot of players want to see and it was on the list for Northrend. There's still a lot in the old world that they have plans for, but they don't want them all to be launched in one expansion."
If they destroy the Old World, I don't see it happening any time soon.
