Tom Chilton talks about 3.2 and the future of World of Warcraft
Videogamer.com has a nice long interview with World of Warcraft Producer Tom Chilton about everything from patch 3.2 and the Argent Tournament to the future of the game at large. They caught up with him at the Warcraft Regional Finals 2009 tournament in Germany this past week, and in part one, he talks about the upcoming patch and what Blizzard is expecting to get out of it. He says the Isle of Conquest battleground is their most "epic-feeling" instanced PvP setting since Alterac Valley, and that they want it to feel nuts, with players fighting each other via air and land. He also mentions Arena, and says that it was originally designed to be "a fun side PvP activity" that they went a little overboard with during Burning Crusade. Finally, he talks about twinks, and says that neither Blizzard nor twinks, apparently, want to see other players crushed by those who have the time or money to max out their low level characters. Even twinks, says Chilton, want to see competition against each other, and the option to turn XP off will let them do that. I'm not sure I agree with that last one -- many twinks seem to beef their characters up just for the chance to lay waste to "normal" players, but Chilton says Blizzard believes otherwise. The second part of the interview is more general -- he talks a little bit about the next expansion (with the same speculation we've already heard: Gilneas, the Maelstrom, the Emerald Dream), and says that designing a race is tougher on artists, but designing a class is tougher on designers. He admits that because we had a new class in Wrath, it's unlikely we'll see another class so soon in the next expansion, but "not impossible" of course. And he does note that Blizzard tries to "pre-seed" the races before they use them as playable races, so if they are adding in races, chances are we've already seen them (which, you may note, wasn't strictly true with the Draenei in BC). Finally, he talks about the future of Blizzard's MMO in general, and says it's still wide open to them: they plan for the game to last for years, and what they do between now and then, whether that be more expansions, microtransactions, or even a free-to-play model, will have to depend on what they want to do at the time.
Very interesting interview. Chilton doesn't really reveal anything, but you do get the sense that save for a very skeleton plan of one or two years in the future, Blizzard is really playing it fast and loose with World of Warcraft. Even he admits that the game may look very different, depending on how things go, in another four years from now.

2nd this! Read a suggestion once where he suggested "goblins could start of neutral and decide to go to horde or alliance at some point". That would be soo cool. Why not have 2 neutral races?
If they're gonna be faction specific, i sure hope consortiums go horde. i hates goblins. grrr...

"Blizzard is really playing it fast and loose with World of Warcraft."
I hope that impression is incorrect. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. In a large sense, I have been impressed with the way Blizzard has managed to refresh without damaging the core that is WoW. But turning WoW into some sort of modified version of Free Realms would be a bad mistake, both for WoW players and for Blizzard's business.

Maybe it's just me, but I read into his comments to mean there will be new playable races in the next expansion.
Fingers crossed.

It's not just you. The fact that he didn't explicitly say it = he confirmed it in my opinion. There will be 2 new playable races in the next expansion. Now what they will be...hoping for something cool for horde, like vykrul or ogres.
Wither Jul 7th 2009 9:07AM
It also occurs to me that new races would tie in perfectly with Blizzard new strange policy on faction change - i.e they refuse to allow players to change race. Maybe because they know that come the new expansion everyone will be wanting to change to the new races? ...
Porky Jul 8th 2009 8:57AM
I think Wither just won the interwebs. Well reasoned, sir!
InsaneAssault Jul 6th 2009 8:32PM
Nope, they were added in after the introduction of the Draenei in BC.

Eck, my reply was directed @ Clevins.

If there will be a new race, which it would appear there will be, I'm putting my money, as well as hopes, on Vrykul. Players have already experienced playing as vrykul in Storm Peaks, so it definitely has been "pre-seeded". In my point of view, Vrykul are the most logical choice out of all the possible races. I just hope that they're added to Horde!
Ghallar Jul 6th 2009 8:57PM
I doubt they will be added, but if we are going to see Vrykul in game they are for sure will join Horde side as long as you payed any attention to the lore while questing in, say, Howling Fjord :)
I really hope for Ethereal. But there are pretty many choices to make some already presented races to become playable like Broken, Furbolgs, Iron Dwarves (that may shackle their bonds as of WoTLK ends), Tuskarr etc, on in case of Maelström expansion, some kind of Broken Nagas or maybe even Markura :D. Goblins and Pandaren are way too popular choices to be true, and I really hope that Blizz won't break Goblin's natural neutrality by making them playable.
There's one mroe thing I would like to see from Blizzard: making Forsaken finally understand Common (as it was in first few patches), or, in a broader scale, make cross-faction communication possible. How come Garrosh and Varian as well as Thrall and Jaina can easily undertand each other and we can't? This game is certainly missing something of this kind.
mattarin Jul 7th 2009 1:37AM
I don't see how the Vyrkul are the "most logical" playable race. The next expansion has been speculated to be Emerald Dream or Maelstrom and I don't see how the Vyrkul would fit into that since they live in Northrend, rage war with Alliance and Horde, are allied with the Scourge, and they don't have druids so i don't see how they would fit into the new expansion lore wise and are the "most logical".
Imo, i think the Alliance will get High Elfs since we are seeing more and more High Elf NPCs lately and i think the Horde will get Ogres, Goblins or maybe Taunka...altough they are similar to Tauren i have feeling the Tauren model is a place holder because in the concept drawings they looked shorter and slimmer.
Endario Jul 7th 2009 9:18AM
How on earth would a Vyrkul fit in the doorways in Stormwind?
ayalafatalis Jul 6th 2009 8:56PM
Good to hear even the slightest mention of new races. Thats one thing that will assuredly keep me in the game. I dont mind playing multiples of the same class, but the same race. Bah.
Pre-seeded races? Vrykul (please!!), worgen (double please), goblins (will kill for), ethereals (meh), naga (not very plausible, but do want), high elves (please god no...no more elves, or trolls for that mater). Pandaren? My first reaction is a "no please", but I remain open minded to it; if they could be implemented properly I would assuredly play one.
Himeros Jul 6th 2009 8:45PM
Unfortunately all this means is that the new races being introduced in the next expansion are gonna be the Taunka and the High Elves, for the Horde and the Alliance respectively.
Those are the 2 races that they "seeded" and included to each group in this expansion so by his wording it makes sense that they will be the ones added. I think this sucks and is not creative at all.... furred out tauren and an alliance blood elf......
Riley Jul 6th 2009 8:49PM
i kinda hope not, because they're both closely related to other races (taunka is just a tauren sub-race and high elves are just blood elves with a moral code)
splodesondeath Jul 6th 2009 8:56PM
I am here to tell you that such will never happen. Hurray.
Taunka are too similar to Tauren, won't become playable. Also, not enough exist, seeing as they have been mostly wiped out by the Scourge.
Additionally Taunka are too tied to Northrend. Why would they want to go to the Maelstrom? (Same goes for the guy who said Vrykul above)
Guess what? Exact same freaking reason for High Elves, (being too similar to Blood Elves). There are WAY too few High Elves. Not to mention that they have no custom art or architecture (just blue coloured Blood Elf buildings).
No Taunka or High Elves.
Himeros Jul 6th 2009 9:02PM
I hope your right but you, just like all of us, are just speculating.
Those are the only two races i've seen seeded in this expansion, and blizzard has proven to like the fact that they can use the same stuff in multiple places. Just like the scourge share the nerubian architecture, they can say that the blood elf and high elves stem from the same place so their architecture is very similar. Also the Taunka are similar to the tauren but they are not the same, they even have their own leader like all the other races, and as such they can join in the activities of the horde when they go to Maelstrom or ED.
Not saying that I want them to do this, just saying it seems the most likely.
Keleron Jul 7th 2009 2:45AM
If Alliance got High Elves I might give Alliance a shot. I think its a perfect match really. As for everything else, lets not forget that Blood Elves were in fact High Elves, and so their cities and buildings SHOULD be the same. The color code is merely cosmetic, but blue for alliance and red for horde (and blood) fit so why not? If High Elves what classes? Mage of course, but will Warlocks be in there? They really shouldn't.. in fact Alliance shouldn't have warlocks at all really. Maybe High Elves will get Druidism instead of Warlock magic.
The Taunka are also a perfect fit, but I am against this because we have the Tauren already. If the Alliance got the Taunka I wouldn't be against it, but why give the Horde two of the same race? I would rather get something like Vrykul or dark dwarves for horde.
Irem Jul 7th 2009 7:46AM
Himeros, I wouldn't read too much into him saying that they need to "seed" future races, because all he means is that we're not likely to see anything coming out of left field that hasn't been in the game yet. They've got a ton of races that would fit the bill.
If it helps, they've actually said before that they won't make high elves playable because there are too few of them left (to expand on what someone said above). Most of the race was wiped out, and out of the survivors, most became blood elves. The high elves are not going to bounce back, and so there's no good story there for a player race. The blood elves are the future of the species.
Hawk Jul 6th 2009 8:48PM
I don't even care which ones they are, but I hope 2 new playable races are introduced in the next X-pack. It really brings a lot of flavor and variety into the world.... of warcraft.
I was disappointed that WOTLK didn't have any new races.
