The Queue: WoW 4.0

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
People responded quite well to the Patches of Yesteryear column that I started up yesterday, so I thought for today's Queue I'd use one of the screenshots of the old UI that I dug up on the internet. A few old readers (yes, you're old farts) noted that the UI featured above likely came from an internal alpha build or something way before the beta 4* when WoW went into "public" beta mode. So the above screenshot and yesterday's screenshot are quite old. Possibly as old as 2001 when WoW was first announced.
And for next week's Patches of Yesteryear column we'll either look at how the models have changed or examine a couple dozen talents that have gone through some pretty amazing metamorphosis.
But enough about that old column, time for Queue!
Siaperas asked...
"WoWHead's PTR site lists a heroic achievement titled: "I've Had Worse". The achievement made me giggle a bit; is that really an achievement on the PTR?"

The I've Had Worse achievement from the Patch 3.2 PTR reads:
"Defeat the Black Knight in 10 minutes while wearing all blue items, before 3 Volcanoes erupt, while everyone in the group has at least 1 stack of Spurting Blood and there are no shamans or paladins in the party but before you spend at least 1000 gold in repairs wiping to the Black Knight."
That is basically there to screw with dataminers. There've been a few like that, the kill 1,000,000 Tuskarr's from the beta comes to mind. Of course if you know you're being screwed with it's funny. If you take yourself and life too seriously, it's annoying.
I find it hilarious.
Andrew asked...
"In regards to turning off XP gains, what about hunter pets? Will it turn the pet's XP off too or will they continue to receive XP until they are on your level?"
It appears at this time your pet will function normally, gaining XP to your level and then stopping. It's as if you've reached max level at 29 (or whatever twink level you've decided on). And as Nascair pointed out, a pet cannot level past its master.
Nizari asked...
"What do you think the chances are that we could see a new race that's available to both factions?"
None.
Yazah asked...
"In WoW 4.0, do you think there will be a new profession, and, if so, what would it be? Are there any hints at all?"
I'd be very very surprised if there wasn't. We have no idea what it'll be yet. And anyone who claims to know is lying.
Rylia asked...
"Here's a question: How many 80s (in, say, Naxx/Ulduar gear) does it take to do BC-era 25-man raids?"
It could take as few as 5 (Gruul) or as many as 20 to 25 (Sunwell). While you're going to over power the fights at 80, and can ignore many mechanics simply because they don't cause catastrophic damage anymore, there are plenty of things that do. You still cannot do Sunwell unless you know the fights. You need to know to take the portals, to taunt, to move on the ground, where to stand, where not to stand, etc...
A very good number of 80s have yet to be able to clear that instance because of the complexity of the fights. In my opinion, it's harder than most of Ulduar.
*I believe beta 4 was the first "public" beta build of the original WoW. However, I'm not sure.

If they ever let people cross factions, what they should do, is just put a damn glow (reminicent of the pally mounts) around every Horde and Alliance. Red for Horde, blue for Alliance (and not Jeff Dunham blue either) and let people be able to toggle it off when they're in a neutral -hyporcite - city like Dalaran.
Me, personally, I don't like the idea of crossing factions or switching sides resulting in a race change. It just seems... like trivalizing it for lazy, rich people. It's a shame that people are in the mentality of "I want it now now now and I have the money for it, so gimme gimme". I guess it all comes down to whoever has the money > time spent.

I 8-manned gruuls with some guildies once. Mage tanking is still fun at level 80
Rob Jul 8th 2009 4:59PM
We tried this a few times with 8 people, most of us were in pre-naxx gear (I as MT was just in blues). It didn't really work. The mobs still hit pretty hard at that gear level, and we just didn't have enough people to make it happen. We're all pretty competent but I think if i was in naxx25 gear it would be doable. It has to do with the number of people allocated to each mob in the HK encounter, with 8 people you have enough 'tanks' to go around but then you have no dps, so the bosses never go down.

Gruul has been 5maned at lv 70 with BT gear ofc, but most of the level 80 blues / epics are better than BT gear.

Small correction: The tooltip for the achievement actually says "Defeast" not "Defeat," to further stir the boiling pot of discussion about said achievement.
ROB13 Jul 8th 2009 3:33PM
Dang, I was about to say that, but it's a common error everyone who is explaining the Achievement has.
Dranes Jul 8th 2009 3:50PM
Also, the criteria is... Ghoul Explode?
???

You have to beat him up then take away his lunch?

When maintenance is performed on tuesdays what happens to the timer for our posted auctions? Does the timer keep running and get chewed up by maintenance (thus making it better to not post auctions if the timer runs into maintenance) or do they stop the timer when the server is down?
Delshay Dethecus US Jul 8th 2009 3:43PM
The timer keeps ticking, that's a "trick" that AH players use, check to see when the auction will end, if it's during down times they will bid on the item in question and win it for the lowest cost.
Naix Jul 8th 2009 3:32PM
Will we ever seen each faction get there own special class again like the paladin and shaman?
DasHeals Jul 8th 2009 3:37PM
Very unlikely, as it would cause extreme balancing issues for raid encounters, unless the classes were the exact same mechanically, and only varied by name.
Robert M Jul 8th 2009 4:03PM
Though I agree with dasheals, his argument isn't entirely valid. Now that we have bring the player not the class, you could easily fit faction specific classes into the buff/debuff matrix and not really run into the same issues that existed previously.
Let's not forget that despite everything Blizzard's tells us about "bring the player, not the class" being for the players, it also allows the designers to create encounters where a list of criteria are expected and thus allows them to work more on mechanics and less on the design matrix of the group like they seemed to do in Sunwell.
Faction specific classes would be much easier to implement than they were in TBC.

New profession for next X-pack(Maelstrom) = Woodworker
Well, I think that'd be cool. Could make bows, staves, boats, etc.
Mordockk Jul 8th 2009 3:41PM
methinks this is a great idea....wood(get it?) work out perfectly with the maelstrom expansion
JKWood Jul 8th 2009 3:39PM
That... Is an amazing idea, actually. Currently, nobody can craft staves, bows, crossbows, or arrows. Wood is already available from vendors, and it could probably be worked into loot tables, plus there's a lumber camp in Eastvale, and Ashenvale... Heck, I'll help design the recipes!
Dobrhaltar Jul 8th 2009 3:47PM
Love it! I think this is one of those "good ideas" that has been floating around for a while. How awesome would it be to build staves, wands, bows, and I love your idea - boats! Epic canoes FTW.
Draelan Jul 8th 2009 3:58PM
Boats? That's a cool idea, especially if the next expansion is Maelstrom.
I want my sweet Battle Canoe, Blizzard! Just like Lou the Cabin Boy in Howling Fjord!
Banndit Jul 8th 2009 4:06PM
and Lumberjack coulod be the gatherer. Just asign trees to appear all over.
Slimreaper Jul 8th 2009 4:07PM
This.
great for economy because it can easily be made into two professions: Logging, a gathering profession involving chopping down trees, and Woodworking, using the raw materials from Logging to craft weapons or whatever.
that would be awesome imo.
