Lorecrafted tackles the Maelstrom

Just recently, Greyseer (the author behind Lorecrafted), finished up a three part speculation series on what he would like to see come out of a Maelstrom expansion. Reading over it, you realize just how many different forces could be at play in the expansion. I don't think everything will play out the way that he thinks they'll play out, but that just lends more weight to just how much could happen in the Maelstrom.
There are plenty of people that think Warcraft dies with Arthas, but when you look at the game world beyond the events of Warcraft III, Arthas is actually relatively small character. He's not even the most dangerous thing Azeroth has seen. The threats that lie within the Maelstrom have proved themselves to be far more destructive... as in, caused Azeroth to sunder into the various pieces that make up the world today. Let's see the Lich King do that.
The Maelstrom opens up opportunities for not only new stories and characters, but the return of some old ones. The Emerald Dream will most definitely play a role, which means Malfurion, Ysera, and that whole crew. Maybe we'll finally get to see Fandral Staghelm's true face: Is he good, evil, or something in between? Queen Azshara will definitely make an appearance, as well as Neptulon. Considering the Maelstrom is home to the Tomb of Sargeras and the Well of Eternity, which was the portal through which Sargeras would enter our world, we'll probably see a significant amount of Burning Legion involvement, too.
Greyseer also suggests we might see the return of Maiev Shadowsong in a fairly significant role, which would please me to no end. She's been one of my favorite Warcraft personas since she made her first appearance in Warcraft III. The death of Illidan is a fairly fitting end to her story, but I still think she's a character that can be taken much farther. She's a person who literally had everything taken away from her by her own people. That's harsh! I'd love to see what she does with her life now that Illidan has been dealt with. Does she fight the good fight against the Legion and whatever else the Maelstrom throws at us? Does she reject the Night Elves and go and do her own thing as a neutral character/faction?
Greyseer and I probably wouldn't agree on everything we expect will happen in the Maelstrom, but reading what he writes about the topics certainly makes you think, and if his ideas get people to start speculating on their own, he's done a good job. Go give his posts a read, he lays them out in the format of a progressing expansion: the launch, patch 4.1 and patch 4.2, then patch 4.3 and patch 4.4.

I'd certainly like for that to be true as with Gilneas opening there's a chance for playable Worgen, something I wanted ever since I ran into the ones in Duskwood just after release.

YMMV. You've just described how I feel about Northrend.
4.0 can't come fast enough for me.

Interesting WAG, but WAG nonetheless.

For the love of everything holy, I hope he's wrong about Maiev. I don't think there's anyone I hate more than her in all of the lore, up to and including the various jerkfaces we've come to know and hate in WoW (including Fandouche Toolhelm). Probably my favorite mission in TFT was killing her over and over to save Illidan from her little red wagon. I'm kind of sad she didn't end up entombed with her girlfriend in Suramar.
Really, she inspires some pretty bad nerdrage in me. I would take an entire raid of nothing but murlocs before having to deal with that chick again.

Took the words out of my mouth, I was thinking the same thing.
I could not stand her in WC3

Seriously, I hate her, Idk how Alex likes her >.>

Yeah, I don't like Maiev either, but I kinda like Staghelm. I hope he just turns out to be a giant jerk, not a bad guy.

Maieve is my personal favorite character...

I really enjoyed his posts. Been reading them as they appear and Lorecrafted is definitely something I subscribe to these days. Do I think he's dead-on? No, but I do think we're more likely to see a combined Maelstrom/Emerald Dream xpac then two separate packs.

Queen Azshara and her crew would be a force to deal with here. She was said to be the most powerful "Highborn" as in Arcane magic of that time and now her powers are greater and she is real buddy buddy with the Burning Legion plus having 10 or so thousand years to stew over how everyone hosed up her plans. That will make for a very mad and vindictive person. No one knows how large her army has grown during this time, we know how bad ass Naga are now so you can bet we have not seen their full might. Plus if she could open a portal then and bring through demons you can bet she will do it again.

Warcraft lore does die with Arthas, I'm sorry to say. Aside from Illidan, I don't remember another villain in the original Warcraft series.
I don't read the books. I play the games. Nobody will care aside from the biggest of fanboyz and girlz.

*cough* Deathwing *cough*

Unfortunately, he's right to an extent.
Enemies invented in an mmo don't carry much weight, since it's known from the beginning that they were designed to be hunted down by the players. Taking someone down that existed in another medium (aka , now that carries a little more significance.
On the other hand, wow has been around long enough that perhaps it can generate its own legitimacy.
I won't mind if they bring back Gul'dan, even though I normally hate that sort of thing. I'm not sure about the lore plausability of it, though.
Volkrin Jul 10th 2009 11:42PM
Yeah, seeing as Illidan nommed on his skull his chances of showing up as anything more substantial than a shade is unlikely. And considering the forces that killed him his soul probably got destroyed as well.

Deathwing, Sargeras, and Kil'jaeden (Take two!) are still out there and all three have been in Warcraft lore for a lot longer than Arthas. Even Azshara, while never appearing in a game, has been known about for as long as the Lich King.

I would be disappointed if the Emerald Dream was limited to being a raid instance.
