Preparing for BlizzCon: There will be funk
BlizzCon approaches! Preparing for BlizzCon is your regular source for tips on how best to prepare for Blizzard's gaming extravaganza. These helpful hints are particularly suited for convention rookies. But if you are a con veteran, we'd love to hear your advice and wisdom in the comments as well.
In almost every one of this series, someone has requested in the comments that we all practice good grooming before attending BlizzCon this year. But it doesn't matter if we post odor preventing techniques here, broadcast them on The WoW Insider Show and it gets picked up by international news -- there is still going to be funk at the con. Not even Anna Torv being photographed wearing a "Well-groomed Geeks are HOT" t-shirt is going to prevent the offending smells coming from some of the attendees. In the interest of promoting tolerance, I'm going to give explanations for some of the odors you will be smelling.
BlizzCon 2009 is coming up on August 21st and 22nd! We've got all the latest news and information. At BlizzCon, you can play the latest games, meet your guildmates, and ask the developers your questions. Plus, there are some great looking costumes.

- Some cultures have different grooming habits than yours. There will be people from all over the world at BlizzCon and also Americans who continue to practice their families' cultural habits in the U.S. Not everyone showers daily or uses deodorant and honestly, body odor just doesn't bother them. These cultures are not inferior to yours, they are just different. The U.S. obsession with daily scouring is actually pretty recent in our history (and the possible health risks as a result are currently being studied), with weekly baths and the rewearing of unstained clothes being common in the first half of the last century. So, if the smell comes with an accent, take that into account.
- Change in diet + close quarters = unpleasant odors. The human body produces odors according to what gets put in and how it is used. We're all going to be eating differently and hanging around in packs for hours. Even if we all shower daily, apply deodorant and wear clean clothes, there will still be olfactory attacks as the day wears on. It's just chemistry.
- Some people just don't care. Yes, there will still be people who refuse to make the effort to groom properly. Such is life.

Lukeyo Jul 10th 2009 10:22AM
Hey, look on the bright side. If there's one thing you'll be glad to be missing out on, it's the funk.
Lukeyo Jul 10th 2009 9:12AM
I tried to take The Funk back to Parliament, but he said he was 'done with dat shit'.
MechChef Jul 10th 2009 9:24AM

In prison if you don't shower, you are hosed down / forced to-this should be implemented at blizzcon lol.
I mean wtf, why wouldn't you clean yourself and use deodorant (at least in our modern American culture) seriously? Is it like a psychological issue like low self-esteem or something, or just giving up on yourself as a human being? Sad stuff either way.
kidjudas Jul 10th 2009 10:34AM
Sorry, mate! That's "legendary" drop!!! And chances of it dropping at BlizzCon is .0000000000000000001%!

"Some cultures have different grooming habits than yours."
Oh, those poor savages. Let us take pity on them for not being American.
You really are clueless, aren't you?
Kemikalkadet Jul 10th 2009 9:23AM
Haha yeah that's how i read it. "People outside of America have no sense of hygene".
Seaborn Jul 10th 2009 9:26AM
That is a perfectly legitimate statement. But thanks for letting us know about you. Whats that smell?
Danny Jul 10th 2009 10:07AM
Clearly the "and also Americans" part was overlooked by you.

"These cultures are not inferior to yours, they are just different."
quit being a dick just for the sake of it.
either read the whole article and use your brain or dont comment, it's a fairly simply procedure.
Gessilea Jul 10th 2009 10:34AM
Sure it's a stereotype, but it's also true. I've lived all over Europe and met a lot of people who thought it was goofy how Americans made such a big deal over a little BO. In some cases they have a point, too. Going a day without a shower isn't going to kill anyone. Also people with healthier diets actually smell better, and you just get used to it.
Seaborn Jul 10th 2009 9:26AM
Now you know why i skip this every year.
Fizzler Jul 10th 2009 9:26AM
This may very well be the strangest article I have ever read from wow.com I attend trade shows several times a year much larger than Blizzcon and far far more International and never had an issue with "funk". Not enough for it be something I think about. Bad breath perhaps but that is Universal and not associated with an "accent"
