Stars discuss their Yogg+0 kill
You've probably heard that the Chinese guild Stars has pulled off the world-first Alone in the Darkness, killing Yogg-Saron with no watchers helping. You may have seen the video they posted of their winning strategy. But here's something even more interesting, for me: a Q&A with the guild about their strategy and their experience with the fight.
It was originally in Chinese, but a poster on the MMO-Champion forums did a translation. It's a really interesting read. For one thing, Affliction Warlocks turned out to be the most valuable class, since DPS have to turn away periodically in phase 3 to avoid Lunatic Gaze and a heavy DoT-based class doesn't lose as much doing this.
The hardest part of the fight, according to Stars, was dealing with the adds and Shadow Beacon in phase 3. Shadow Beacon is randomly used on between three and five adds, and these adds need to be separated from each other and taken away from Yoggy (or else bad things happen). Basically, the way Stars do it, it's a matter of Hunters using Distracting Shot on the Beaconed adds, and of proper tank positioning (see picture, above-right).
There are a few more interesting tips throughout the interview. They didn't immediately turn around when Yogg cast Lunatic Gaze; instead, they sat through one tick of it to maximize DPS uptime -- they feel that the fourth Beacon is basically unsurvivable, so phase 3 has a 3-minute "soft enrage."
Finally, they call Yogg+0 the hardest boss ever in WoW, saying Sunwell is "not even comparable." They think the fight is well designed, with the exception that it's imbalanced with respect to warlocks - the more Affliction locks you have, the easier it will be. They also say the fight is "less interesting than Mimiron."
There seems to be a lot of love for Mimi out there in the raiding community, and I can see why - it's a great fight. But really? More interesting than Yogg-0? Anyway, I always enjoy these post-mortem talks with leading-edge guilds - it's cool to see the kind of stuff they think about and try.

having a boss where you need warlocks in HEAVY ammounts its not love. its stupidity.

I think another facet of Affliction Superiority is that maybe half our spells can be applied while facing away. It used to be fun running along triple dot'ng (siphon life, corruption, curse of agony) and just never stop running as the mobs lined up behind you.
So yeah, it's mainly the dot's ticking away, but you can at least still apply a couple while turned.

I am now officially a fangirl of Stars.

I too find Mimiron easily the most fun boss in Ulduar, and it's very high on the all time best boss fights list too.
"having a boss where you need warlocks in HEAVY ammounts its not love. its stupidity."
Yes.

This was posted like 3 days ago...nice response time

Actually, saw it on mmo-champion last tuesday.

why don't you post your negativity up your own a^&*#&(
Camilo Jul 13th 2009 8:02AM
It's more fact than anything. 'Nice response time' was simply a sarcastic remark regarding the fact that it took them close to 5 days to get this news out. At some point it stops being news and becomes olds.

So Spriests should be decent for this fight too, no?
Anonymoose Jul 12th 2009 1:10PM
Decent is a good word to use.

It's not just the dots that make this fight good for us Afflocks - the third phase starts right at the point where Drain Soul kicks up its DPS. I know in Naxx 10 gear with 10 man buffs (doing around 4k on Patchwerk), my Drain Soul ticks for something like 13,000 once the boss is under 25% HP, so I imagine five locks in top-end Ulduar 25 gear are able to do much more.
Sadly, this makes me wonder if Drain Soul Execute will get even more nerfs in 3.2.

As much as I do like mim, as we still haven't downed him, It can get annoying wiping on him again and again,
but congratulations to stars for killing this incredibly hard mode boss

My guild got our first Mimiron kill on Saturday night and I think we all agree it's a great fight. It's very technical without being super punishing, and none of the phases last so long that it feels like an endurance fight.
Stars seem to be quite a nice bunch, in stark contrast to the US and EU guilds like Ensidia et. al. who seem rather petty.

Stars appear to be a shining example of player skill, innovation and dedication. What a refreshing change to see such polite WoW players willing to share and discuss a world first. Nothing like the terminally embarassing battle between the US and EU.
This is truely a guild to emulate. Not a paid-to-play sponsored superguild stacked with the worlds best who gave up on the Yogg-0. Not an exploiting US guild who was content with letting their "interesting use of game mechanics" slide under the radar.
Well done Stars, we look forward to seeing you more!

Big big gratz to Stars. I remember less than 2 years ago, western guilds (US & EU) argues that Asian guilds cannot come up with their own strategies. All Asian guilds do is to be copycat. Keep in mind that TBC was not even released in CWOW when Nihilum downed Illidan.
I was reading through the website where Stars posted the original Chinese post. The most frequent replies say "老外读中文", meaning western players must read Chinese to understand the strategy.
I can tell you there are a lot of national pride. Maybe average Joe does not care, but for elite and semi professional gamers, this definitely feels good.

Very refreshing to see a kill like this of such high stature get done by a guild who is so open and seemingly all round nice about it all.
When I saw their 1st 40 second video of when Yogg+0 went down and one of the guys went F%&&*^$ Yes ! you could hear how happy he was and it was very endearing. and now with all this coming out it's even better.
I rather have a nice guild on top then the seemingly untouchable elitist type of guild.
