Breakfast Topic: Missing Professions?

All in all the game is pretty well serviced in the realm of professions, both primary and secondary. However I can't help thinking there needs to be a bit more variety. People seem to pick the easy professions or the ones which make the most cash very quickly. Should there be tertiary professions, like lockpicking, and should they be made available to all? At the same time, do you think Blizzard were smart when they only provided two profession slots? Do you think people should be able to learn all of them, even if they could only take one or two to Grand Master level? Do you think, aside from first aid, cooking and fishing, there's a missing profession? If you could add one to the game, what would it be?

Chaufer / Pilot - 450 grants ability to get mount (flying or land) that carries 5 man party. Lots of gold boys mount/vehicle to carry 10 man raid. Imagine, using it like a Trojan horse or a Howitzer into Alliance or Horde cities and out rolls your 10 man raids. Talk about your seige!!!
River boat captain - Maybe even a water vehicle to carry the same amount up and down rivers or sea fronts.

LOL yea I can just picture that 10 man vehicle all of a sudden stopping and everyone going "hey why aren't we going anywhere?" 10 minutes later after everyone made it on their own where they needed to be the person "driving" says Sorry guys was afk. I dont see the need for a 'chaufer" when we have our own epic or normal flying mounts ground mounts... flight paths and boats from one area to another... it's useless imo

Fixing engineering

I've always wondered why my Blacksmith can't repair his own armor.

or a tailor, if you're a clothie!

I think they need some kind of woodworking/carpentry profession. Almost every zone has a bunch of trees or stumps or something that could be farmed for various levels of wood. This wood could then be used for bows, crossbows, staves, shields and even practice weapons. Like jewelcrafting wooden idols could be made that provide bonuses, also many talismans and trinkets can be wood carvings. Paper can also be made, which would be good for scribes. I am sure there are countless other wooden treasures that could be devised, especially if they implement housing!

Bartender, or "mixologist". Classes with healing spells don't really need to eat (aside from food buffs) the profession is mostly about restoring Health. A profession based around restoring Mana would be cool. Cooking has some drink recipes, but not until higher lvls. Drinks could give buffs similar to food and you could make alcohol too with various visual effects.

Don't we call this "Alchemy"?
Thrush Jul 17th 2009 10:44AM
Hmmm ... you're right, but when I've done alchemy in the past I didn't want to down a potion after every few fights like I do with food or vendor-bought drinks. Pots feel more valuable and "in case of emergency" than food and drink does. At least in my opinion.

maybe implementing a profession which uses skinning?
Eng, JC & BS uses Mining
Insciption and Alch use Herbalism
Only LW uses skinning
shaddam Jul 17th 2009 8:32AM
Engineering use it too
Nix Jul 17th 2009 8:35AM
would you rather choose skinning over mining for eng? :)

There's been a lot of support on the forums for woodworking and logging.
They'd work well as a combo.
"Make bows!
Make staves!
Make arrows!
Make totems and relics!
Make handles for epic guns, maces, and swords!
Make wands (in conjunction with enchanting)!
Huge BOP bank boxes!
If you ever decide to implement player housing, make cabinets! That smell of rich mahogany!
The Argent Coliseum quest showed us that logging could work well in the world, and you could even get some interactivity with D.E.H.T.A.
Chop down your guild's resto druid and make new dutch clogs! Why not!"

I've always been rather surprised that Wood Working was never a profession, especially considering bows, crossbows, staves, you could even put polearms in there, maybe even splints for a profession specific healing item. You could construct some shields and such too. I'm sure with enough thought it could easily be a well thought out profession.
Wood working would also have it's gathering profession companion in lumberjacking. I would imagine this would work just like mining, except there's specific indigenous trees to chop down with your handy dandy slap chop axe!
Zach Jul 17th 2009 8:41AM
Woodworking could also even provide special parchments for Inscription (though I dunno what they would be for).
Colin Jul 17th 2009 9:46AM
@zach - That'd be some crappy parchment. Paper made out of woodpulp is incredibly horrible and falls apart very quickly. It would make much more sense to make the paper from cloth or make actual parchment from animal skins.
You make a good point that no one makes paper in WoW. It must be coming from somewhere!
Spazmoose Jul 17th 2009 12:54PM
You could also have a profession specific mount for water travel...the canoe :-)
lockanon Jul 18th 2009 4:34AM
@colin
85% of paper out there today is made of wood pulp...
The only other materials used are used almost exclusively as that type of paper.
(i.e. cotton, silk, plastic)
Maybe I misunderstood you though, PARCHMENT made from wood pulp...yes, crap.
Paper though is common.

I'd just like a bit more done with First Aid. Out of the three secondary professions, it has the least going for it. Fishing and Cooking both have quite a few acheivements, and even a title each, but First Aid has it's different stages acheivements, one for 500 Heavy Frostweave and one for healing someone from 5% health or less with a Heavy Frostweave, and that's it.
Where's our "Dr. Ixui" title? How about some medical garb along the lines of the Chefs hat? Healing one of each class/race? Just a little something more is all I'm asking.
Gnomedeplume Jul 17th 2009 6:03PM
I agree with this. I use First Aid on my warlock when soloing levels because I can make use of bandages that are designed for characters with alot more health. I just cannibalize my HP for mana and bandage, faster than a mana pot.
I have always wondered why First Aid can't be used to stop a bleed effect (after exiting combat of course). What better use for a bandage than to stop bleeding?
