It'd be a good solution for that and frankly guild wars which you only need to pay for the game not monthly lets people dye the outfits so you can't say it'd be all that hard for wow to do. Guildwars has it so you can change one color and the rest is in more neutral tones (browns, blacks, or white and silver or greys etc). Personally I think wow could allow for 2-3 color changes. They could make it so you could buy from auction house basic colors but for special ones you'd need direct contact and have to have someone alter the item for you.
