Patch 3.2 brings two more heirloom weapons
We were all aflutter over the news of the new Heirloom chest pieces that give you an extra 10% XP, but we somehow forgot to mention the two new heirloom weapons. The Venerable Mass of McGowan and the Repurposed Lava Dredger are the two new heirloom weapons we'll be getting in patch 3.2, and sticking with the theme of the other heirlooms thus far, you'll recognize them instantly if you're an old school player. These two items are probably aimed at filling gaps in Heirloom itemization that left people like Enhancement Shaman and Feral Druids without a swank weapon to level up with. Naturally, other classes can use these if they want, but those two class/spec combinations really had no good options to work with.
I'm particularly pleased to see the Mass of McGowan being brought back. I don't know if it was the same on all servers, but on my particular server, that thing was largely believed to be a myth for the longest time. You see, the Mass only drops off of mobs that are level 60 or higher. Before they finished implementing Silithus, there were no non-elite level 60 mobs out in the world that you would just kill at random throughout your day. The only place you could find this thing was usually in raids. I'm sure my server had plenty more of them, but the only one I was actively aware of was one being used by the main tank of a Horde raiding guild. It had more mystique surrounding it than most of today's epics.
They just don't make blues like that these days. Le sigh!

That repurposed lava dredger is retarded as is, 434 feral ap at level 80? the greens and blues in OUTLANDS are better than that. I hope that's a mistake and is going to be corrected.

Feral Ap is
(Weapon DPS (rounded down) - 54) * 14 .
The DPS on that weapon is likely still being ironed out.

What do ya expect, Its a one handed weapon. One hander's are always fail for feral druids, since they dont have near the weapon dps of a 2 hander and druids cant duel wield.

@gnosh
I understand the formula. When was the last time you saw a level 80 2 hander with 54 weapon dps? You'll notice the one hander has 3 times the weapon dps. I'm sure it's a mistake, still seems like an odd one to me.
@ komamura
The dredger IS a 2 hand mace.

Quote from Wowhead: "It's been buffed in a recent ptr patch, now up to 156.0 dps at level 80 which translates into 1417 feral AP. Still seems a little low considering other level 80 blues have about 1600 feral AP..."

A new lava dredger to run around with for 80 levels?! Oh hell yes, sign me up. Still one of my favorite weapon models in the game. My NE Druid still has hers but, then again, she still has all her T1/T2 epics because I haven't played that toon since BC came out.
musicjunkie300 Jul 17th 2009 11:25AM
clearly something is wrong with the linked mace. it's dps is only 85.9. Perhaps the linked one was viewed not at lvl 80?

Thank you blizzard, i wanted a weapon to level my shammy with :D:D

Oops, forgot to mention that the previous comment is for the Repurposed Lava Dredger

The Venerable Mass seems mis-itemized, it's showing the damage of an ilvl 213 epic. 155.7 dps at level 80? All the other one-handed heirlooms go up to about 120 dps, which is normal for a ilvl 187 blue (i.e. a normal-mode endgame 5-man drop)
Ian R. (Orkchop) Jul 17th 2009 11:35AM
OMG, my shaman sooo wanted that lava dredger at 60. (Back then shaman couldn't dual wield, so enhancement was all about 2-h and windfury procs). Its great to see it back again.
Nostraphex Jul 17th 2009 11:38AM
Do I see Heirloom Items being offered for Champion's Seals? Is this something new in 3.2 or will they all be available for Badges and Shards like before?
emberwild Jul 17th 2009 11:57AM
The weapons were added to fill a gap in heirloom items for certain classes and specs that didn't have weapons suited for them before, so they will more than likely cost around the same amount and with the same currency as the current ones.
Onouris Jul 17th 2009 1:44PM
On the PTR, all PvE heirloom items - including shoulder, chest, weapon and trinket items - are available from a new Argent Tournament vendor. Chest and Shoulder slots cost 60 Champion's Seals, trinkets are 75, and weapons are either 90-ish or 60-ish (can't remember exactly) for two-handed weapons and 1-handed weapons.

Not that I should be complaining considering my shaman is basically using the PvP heirloom dagger, but I wish that they had a PvP version to spend stone keeper shards on. I can always find other things to spend emblems on, and I'm already getting burnt out on the tournament just trying to get the hippograph.

"They just don't make blues like that these days. Le sigh!"
You clearly have forgotten of the Dustbringer.
MechChef Jul 17th 2009 12:17PM
Moreover, the Lava Dredger shares the same model with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44708
But it's a drop from a rare mob.

"Before they finished implementing Silithus, there were no non-elite level 60 mobs out in the world that you would just kill at random throughout your day."
This information is actually false. There were mobs in deadwind pass as well as the champions right outside Lights Hope Chapel. I think there were a few level 60 non-elites in Wintergrasp as well.
Alex Ziebart Jul 17th 2009 12:14PM
Nope! The highest those mobs went was level 59.
