Interesting read. I find your column to consistently be one of the most entertaining on Wow.com (i kinda miss the "insider", btw)My mage has been a blast to play (no pun intended), definitely my favorite or possibly second favorite class to play, next to... ahem... well, let's just say it starts with a "war-"I noticed a lot of people here talking about Frost, maybe because it is a popular spec for leveling. And I just had to share something:I know, i know, i know that Fire is considered THE spec for Raiding, with Arcane a not-so-close second, and that Frost... well... is somehow missing something (like maybe a decent 51-pt talent) and leans more toward PvP.But my Mage IS a Frost Mage. She always has been and always will be -- it is an integral part of her persona, and i would not dream of changing her to match the conventional ideas. In Crypts and Sethek yesterday, the Healer started bugging me about my spec: "Wow, you're Frost -- lol -- what? are you afraid of power?" When the Collar of Command dropped, they all now joked "maybe the mage will get it so she can start doing some DPS". At the time, i was hitting 350 -- a bit low, for sure, but i was being cautious, since the DK tank had a bad pull on the first fight and we had wiped -- not the first boss, mind you, but the first trash fight period! Also, i was just getting warmed up. Additionally, the tank DK was also at 350, while the other DK and the Shadow Priest, both two levels higher than me, were at 650 and 250, respectively.Anyway, long story short, I just knuckled down and did my Magely best job, and by the end of it all, I was the one sitting at 650, while the one DK was a bit below me and the Tank DK and the SP were still at 350 and 250.Here's a question...Are there viable Frost Mages out there, successfully raiding at 80?And why the hell won't Blizz fix Frost? Why can't we have a valuable 51-point talent like most everyone else? And where could i find the average DPS per level per class?

I raid as Frost.Yes you heard taht right, I Raid As Frost. No other spec I could imagin raiding as, Fire and Frostfire depend too much on crits to ever be reliable imho, ive seen too many firebal/ffb mages dealing 2500 one fight and then over 3500 annother fight, its just too random to work. And arcane is the fast-mana burning-over cooldown oriented spec that just never seems to work in the raids ive been in, more often than not our boomkin uses her innerverate on our arcane mage because his Evocation got messed up.When my mage started lvling in northerend I scoured loot tables for ANYTHING with a decent ammount of haste and I got those items, and to this day, doing heroics and raiding, I still ONLY roll on haste items, I almost never get crit rating, ive got a whopping 19% crit rating with molten armor up and the Glyph for it. I am only boasting about 1300 SP, but ive got a 2 sec cast frostbolt and I hit 6500+ crits Very often, ive even been known to deal over 8k with a crit.I joined a guild that is just now starting on 10 man naxx, and since ive been there b4, and have some fairly decent gear compared to the rest, I got my raid slot, and I get my pick of Whatever gear upgrades I want/need. The trick with raiding as frost is experience, and knowing a trick or two doesnt hurt(psst! get TTW in the arcane tree, you WILL love it, and NEVER get Glyph of Frostbolt). Other than that, stick to knowing your spec, know the ins and outs of each talent, and with frost its fairly simple, spam frostbolt, and you cant go wrong with that =). If you still have a major glyph slot open when you hit 80, consider Glyph of Fireball if you got the Brainfreeze talent, its a ok DPS boost

altough it might seem viable to raid as frost (would pay to be able to do that), you will eventually reach a point where no matter how well you play, frost will stay way back in damage. In nax10 you can probably get away with it (assuming most other players arent that experienced), but you will need a lot more dps for a lot of fights, and frost just doesnt makes it.btw torr... a 6k crit is pretty much a regular hit with a pyro :)

@zigglerThe good thing with frost is once you reach the max haste vs. GC point, you can stack SP or crit(I prefer SP) so scale your DPS. With fire/ffrostfire you MUST stack crit thru the roof, and cant stop untill you hit the max crit possible for the current content, and at that point, stacking anything else is pretty pointless, all of your enchants/gems are tied up in crit. Im not certain with arcane, but there is a point where your mana efficency becomes a serious issue vs. your DPS, and you MUST choose one or the other. Frost doesnt have either of those problems, it just has low base damage, and there are ways to augment it, ways that DONT work as fire/ffb and that would be Insane as Arcane.

Except every site agrees that stacking SP is better than crit, until you get to like 4k spellpower, which is something that we can't quite get to yet. Basically, for frost and arcane, priority would be Sp>haste>crit, whereas fire would more likely be SP>crit>haste, with it really being a playstyle preference as to which is better.
